HCAW releases statement regarding corona-case Neptunus
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - In the last few days, some stories appeared regarding a corona-case in the team of Curaçao Neptunus and a situation that followed after the game played between HCAW and Neptunus last Monday. According to an article published by NH Nieuws, this was the reason that HCAW's Head Coach Dè Flanegin stepped down immediately after the game.

In August and last month, Hoofddorp Pioniers and L&D Amsterdam Pirates postponed some of their game sure to corona-cases.

On August 8, Pioniers scrubbed two games of both its main-squad vs. Silicon Storks (Big League) and its second team vs. Twins Oosterhout 2 ('Overgangsklasse'), after a player of the second team was tested positive. Three days later, the series-opener against Pirates also was postponed for these reason.

On September 11, the second game between Pirates and Neptunus was postponed for four days due to a possible case at Pirates. The next day, the third game, as well as the re-scheduled second game, were cancelled after two players were tested positive. On September 16, Amsterdam Pirates announced that also the 3-game series against HCAW had been removed from the schedule. All these game are re-scheduled for the coming days.

As a reaction to the situation on Monday-evening after the game between HCAW and Neptunus, the days prior to this game and the following publications, HCAW published the next statement on its website on Thursday (October 1):

Statement HCAW (Neptunus/Corona)
''On Monday-evening September 28, HCAW played a game in the Baseball Big League against Curaçao Neptunus. The run-in to this game as well as the game itself and the reports distributed through various media afterwards give us as a board reason to respond to this.

Prior to the series with Curaçao Neptunus, our Manager Top Baseball had telephone contact with the vice-chairman of Curaçao Neptunus on Wednesday, September 23. During this conversation, Curaçao Neptunus reported that a player from Curaçao Neptunus has had complaints since Wednesday, September 23, and the club immediately had him commercially tested for corona. From that moment on and awaiting the result of the test the player has been quarantined. He has not been with the team or played in the games against HCAW.

It was also mentioned that this player has been with the group (Neptunus) for the last time since Tuesday, September 22, and that he only received complaints on Wednesday, September 23. Last Friday it turned out that the player had tested positive. The advice that the GGD had given to the player for the fellow players has been adopted by Curaçao Neptunus and the Federation; observing the hygiene and distance measure, being alert to complaints and that there is no extra risk for fellow players.

There is/was no reason not to allow games to take place. At the same time of informing the club, Curaçao Neptunus also informed the KNBSB. The Manager Top Baseball of HCAW thought to do well not to share this case with the people involved within his own club, including board and coaches. Curaçao Neptunus had dealt with the situation adequately and the advice of the GGD did not give enough cause to create unnecessary panic. He wanted to keep the peace.

In retrospect, we believe that this situation should have been discussed internally with those involved before drawing an own conclusion. The KNBSB itself did not contact HCAW regarding this situation, as Curaçao Neptunus had already informed HCAW and communication between both clubs was underway. All three parties were aware of the situation.

The other issue regarding the participation of the Belgian player from Curaçao Neptunus is possible according to the regulations of the KNBSB. There is also no entry ban for Belgian players who play sports at the highest level in the Netherlands.

The board of HCAW regrets the state of affairs surrounding these games and the resulting commotion. We are a great supporter of transparent communication and again such a situation should have been discussed with those directly involved.

On behalf of the board of HCAW,
Bas Veerman, chairman''
