Amsterdam Pirates No-Hits HCAW in make-up game
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - Three pitchers combined on a No-Hitter in a 10-0 shutout-victory for reigning champion L&D Amsterdam Pirates against HCAW in a make-up game on Friday-evening (October 2). The game was the opener of a 3-game series, which will close coming Sunday to end the Top-4 Pool. The game was cancelled on Thursday-evening due to field-conditions after it had rained frequently during the day. For HCAW, this was its fifth loss in a row.

The game was played without spectators, as fans are not allowed to attend sports games (professional and amateur) since Tuesday, September 29, due to stricter measures against the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Tonight, Rob Cordemans started for Amsterdam Pirates and threw five hitless innings. Lefthander Nick Veltkamp then took over and pitched the sixth inning. With Amsterdam Pirates leading 10-0, Matz Schutte threw the seventh inning.

Amsterdam Pirates scored runs in all innings, except the first. The team scored three runs in two of those at bats.

Pirates collected 14 basehits, including four by Delano Selassa, one of them a homerun. Sharlon Schoop recorded three basehits, while Denzel Richardson also homered and batted in four runs.

The No-Hitter is the first for Amsterdam Pirates in the highest league. The last No-Hitter in the Dutch big league was thrown on April 26 last year when Lars Huijer (Hoofddorp Pioniers) threw a 7-inning No-Hitter against Storks.

The last Combined No-Hitter was thrown on May 23, 2015 in what also was a 7-inning game. Back then Orlando Yntema (5 innings), Jorian van Acker (1 inning) and Loek van Mil (1 inning) threw a No-Hitter for Neptunus against UVV. Unfortunately, Van Mil passed away last year at a much too young age.

For Rob Cordemans, this was the second No-Hitter in which he participated. Fifteen years ago, on May 7, 2005, Cordemans threw a 9-inning No-Hitter while pitching for Neptunus in an 8-0 shutout-win. His opponent then was Amsterdam Pirates for whom he pitches since 2010.

Pirates was also held hitless on June 12, 2008, which was the first No-Hitter thrown at the team's home-site in Amsterdam. Back then, Leon Boyd threw a 9-inning No-Hitter for Neptunus in a 5-2 victory.

For Home Plate Umpire Rob Has, this was the fourth No-Hitter he was involved in. In 2012, he was at third base in a 5-inning No-Hitter thrown by Mika de Lincel (Hoofddorp Pioniers). Next, Has was behind the plate when Orlando Yntema (Neptunus) threw in a 7-inning No-Hitter in 2016. Last year, he also was at third base when Misja Harcksen (Neptunus) threw a Perfect Game.

Coincidentally, tonight's Official Scorer Stefan Slinger also was active in the No-Hitters thrown by De Lincel and Harcksen.

Tonight's No-Hitter was the second thrown in the postseason. The first was thrown on August 19, 2010 in the Play-Downs by Joey Eijpe of HCAW.

With tonight's victory, Amsterdam Pirates is now one win away from qualifying for the best-of-seven Holland Series, which will open on Saturday, October 10. Curaçao Neptunus reached the Championship Final earlier in the week.

Last year, the two teams also faced each other in the Holland Series. Neptunus then won the first three games, but Amsterdam Pirates then wrote history by becoming the first team in history to win the next four games to capture the title.

(October 2)

Tonight, Rob Cordemans started for Amsterdam Pirates and threw five hitless innings. The 45-year old righthander threw 63 pitches and struckout five batters. Lefthander Nick Veltkamp then took over and pitched the sixth inning. He struckout all three batters he faced. With Amsterdam Pirates leading 10-0, Matz Schutte threw the seventh inning. He walked one batter, but kept the No-Hitter intact.

For Veltkamp and Schutte, tonight were their first pitching appearances in the Top-4 Pool and their first appearances in almost a month. Despite that, the two showed that their control was not bothered by that and they encountered no problems. On September 4, both threw one inning in relief against Silicon Storks. In that game, Cordemans also was the starter and threw five innings in an 11-0 win to become the first pitcher with 200 career-wins.

Opponent HCAW got only two baserunners in the 7-inning game. Rob Cordemans retired the first six batters he faced. He then hit lead-off hitter Leandro Anasagasti with a pitch in the top of the third inning. Moments later, he moved into scoring position when Cordemans made a throwing error during a pick-off attempt. The veteran righthander then struckout the next two batters. Hereafter, the next pick-off by Cordemans to second base was successful, as he eliminated Anasagasti there. He then retired the side again in the fourth and fifth inning. With that, Cordemans faced the minimum total of 15 batters in the five innings he threw.

As mentioned, Nick Veltkamp then struckout three batters in the sixth inning.

Next pitcher Matz Schutte then retired the first two batters in the seventh. The at bat began with a line drive from lead-off hitter Jeandro Tromp, but the ball was caught by third baseman Delano Selassa. With two outs, Schutte walked Arthur Bonevacia, who had entered the game defensively in the top of the seventh. Bonevacia became the second baserunner for HCAW, but hereafter, Kevin Dirksen flied out and that ended the game, as Pirates was leading with a 10-0 score.

All outs made by Pirates were made in the infield. Of the 21 outs, there were eight strikeouts and eight groundouts. As mentioned, there was one pick-off. The other outs were two foul-outs, one flyout and one line out. The line out in the seventh inning was the lone hit that jeopardized the No-Hitter.

Amsterdam Pirates got two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning, but was held scoreless by HCAW-starter Luuk ter Beek. With one out, Gilmer Lampe reached on a bunt-single, then Sharlon Schoop doubled. With runners on second and third base, Ter Beek struckout Kalian Sams, then a flyout ended the at bat.

Pirates opened the score with two runs in the second inning, which began with three consecutive basehits. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a single, then moved to third base when Delano Selassa also hit a single. Niels van Weert followed with a runscoring single. Hereafter, Selassa and Van Weert moved on a sacrifice bunt by Max Clarijs, then got awarded the next base when a balk was called. With that, Selassa scored the second run. With Van Weert now on third base, Roelie Henrique hit a line drive. But that was caught by second baseman Berend Ruben, who hereafter caught a pop-fly that ended the inning.

The home-team rallied for three runs in the third inning. With one out, Kalian Sams singled and scored on a triple by Denzel Richardson. Next batter Kenny Berkenbosch grounded to third baseman Kevin Dirksen. He opted to eliminate Richardson at the plate, who had taken off on contact. However, Richardon beat the throw and scored. Berkenbosch, who reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third base on a following single by Delano Selassa, then scored when next batter Niels van Weert also singled. With runners on first and second base, the inning ended when Max Clarijs grounded into a double play.

Pirates added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning off of new pitcher Johannes Verroen Garcia. With one out, he walked Gilmer Lampe, who got second base when another balk was called, then scored on a single by Sharlon Schoop.

Leading 6-0, Pirates scored four more runs in the next two innings, thanks to two homeruns.

In the bottom of the fifth, Delano Selassa led off with a homerun to lift the lead to 7-0.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Sharlon Schoop singled, which was his third basehit tonight. His pinch-runner Raydley Legito moved into scoring position when next batter Kalian Sams walked. The two runners then scored when Denzel Richardson hit the ball over the leftfield-fence for a 3-run homerun. With two outs, Delano Selassa reached on an infield-hit to record his fourth basehit in the game. Hereafter, a pitching change followed. Second baseman Berend Ruben took over the pitching, while Arthur Bonevacia was inserted as new second baseman. An unfamiliar position for Bonevacia, as he is an outfielder. The inning ended when Niels van Weert grounded out.

With Pirates now leading 10-0, Matz Schutte became the third Pirates-pitcher in the top of the seventh. As mentioned, the righthander walked Arthur Bonevacia with two outs. Next batter Kevin Dirksen hit the ball to second baseman Niels van Weert, who made the catch.

That ended the game and secured the No-Hitter. The first in the highest league in the history of Amsterdam Pirates, which made its debut in the big league in 1982.
