DSS/Kinheim secures win vs. Quick Amersfoort in 8th inning
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - DSS/Kinheim opened its 3-game series against Quick Amersfoort with a 13-9 win on Friday-evening (September 4). The game was halted after eight innings, as the 10:30 PM curfew had been reached. The game was cancelled due to rain on Thursday-evening and was re-scheduled for tonight.

Tonight's game was one of three that rained out on Thursday. Two games were re-scheduled for tonight, the third will be part of a double-header on Saturday. These four series, which will be completed on Sunday, are the final ones of the regular season. The postseason opens next Thursday, September 10.

DSS/Kinheim rallied for five runs in the first inning, but Quick Amersfoort (trailing 6-0) did the same in the second at bat. DSS/Kinheim then led 9-5 halfway the fourth, but saw Quick narrow the deficit to 9-8 moments later. In the top of the eighth inning, DSS/Kinheim rallied for four more runs to take a decisive lead.

Both teams collected eleven basehits, but also made some defensive errors. DSS/Kinheim made four, Quick made three.

Aidan Finnegan delivered three basehits for DSS/Kinheim and also batted in three runs. Donny Kuijper also had three RBI's, while Kevin Nieveld scored three runs.

Joran Berkhout had three basehits for Quick Amersfoort, which lost its sixth game in a row.

(September 4)

DSS/Kinheim struck early with a 5-run rally in the top of the first inning. While Quick Amersfoort narrowed the deficit several times, the productive first inning proved to be decisive, as DSS/Kinheim never relinquished the lead.

Quick-starter Gilian Wernet began with a strikeout, but then saw the next six batters reach base safely. With one out, Wernet got the bases loaded quickly. He walked Jochem Koedijk, then hit Jeldwin Orman with a pitch. The two runners advanced on a wild pitch, then Tino van Erk walked to load the bases. Another wild pitch followed, which enabled Koedijk to score the first run. The bases got loaded again moments later when Kevin Nieveld also walked. Hereafter, Aidan Finnegan delivered a 2-run single and Donny Kuijper added a 2-run double. That lifted the lead to 5-0 and ended the evening for Wernet, as Stijn Bruins Slot took over. He struckout the next batter, then a grounder ended the at bat, but DSS/Kinheim had taken a decisive lead.

DSS/Kinheim added its sixth run in the top of the second inning, which could be determined as an insurance run at that moment. Thomas Bos led off with a walk, advanced on a wild pitch and a single by Jochem Koedijk, then scored on a single by Jeldwin Orman.

Trailing 6-0, Quick Amersfoort got back into the game by staging a 5-run rally in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Jelle Bing. Quick left a runner behind on second base in the first inning, but then struck in the second at bat. Tijmen Takke led off with a single and with one out, the bases got loaded when Emeron Lourens and Rowan van Hoek also singled. Jordy Burger then also delivered a single, which led to the first run. A force play-grounder by Denzel Brooks then led no outs. Instead, a run was scored and an error followed, which gave Quick another run and runners on second and third base. Bing struckout the next batter, but hereafter, a throwing error on a grounder by Rachid Engelhardt gave Quick two more runs. A grounder ended the at bat, but Quick had narrowed the deficit to 6-5.

DSS/Kinheim added another run in the third inning. Donny Kuijper led off with a single, advanced on an one-out grounder by Bram Blokker and scored on a 2-out single by Thomas Bos, who later stole second base, but then was left behind on second base.

The Haarlem-team took some more distance by scoring twice in the top of the fourth. Both runs were unearned. Lead-off hitter Tino van Erk reached on an error, then moved to second base on a wild pitch. There, due to a hamstring-injury, he was replaced by pinch-runner Mitchel Dautzenberg, who himself is also recovering from an injury. While the infielder is able to run, Dautzenberg is not fit enough to throw a ball. With Dautzenberg on second base, Kevin Nieveld walked and the bases got loaded when Aidan Finnegan singled. The first run was then scored on a sacrifice fly by Donny Kuijper. Nieveld moved to third base on a force play-grounder by Nick Hofer, then scored on a double by Bram Blokker. Another pitching change followed hereafter, as Jasper Popken took over. He got an inning-ending grounder, but DSS/Kinheim now led 9-5.

Again, Quick Amersfoort managed to come back within one run, as the team scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jordy Burger led off with a walk, stole second base, advanced on a following error and scored when next batter Denzel Brooks grounded out. Joran Berkhout then doubled and with two outs, Roger Bernadina and Tijmen Takke connected for back-to-back RBI-doubles to make it a 9-8 score.

After four productive innings, the next three at bats remained scoreless. DSS/Kinheim was retired in order by Jasper Popken in the fifth and sixth inning. Next pitcher Temesh Lourens then struckout the side in the seventh inning.

Quick Amersfoort got some baserunners in its fifth, sixth and seventh inning, but also was held scoreless. In the fifth, Moreno Vork took over the pitching for DSS/Kinheim. With two outs, he walked Jordy Burger, but he was caught stealing moments later.

With one out in the sixth, Vork gave up singles to Joran Berkhout and Rachid Engelhardt, but then was supported with a double play on a grounder by Roger Bernadina. On his grounder, second baseman Bram Blokker threw the ball to short stop Thomas Bos, who then got the ball in time to new first baseman Marcel Tolenaars, who had taken over the position from Tino van Erk.

In the seventh, with DSS/Kinheim leading 9-8, Robyn Clara became the new pitcher. He walked Taylor Clemensia with one out, but he was caught stealing moments later.

In the top of the eighth, DSS/Kinheim decided the game with a 4-run rally. Jochem Koedijk led off with a walk and Jeldwin Orman singled. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Marcel Tolenaars, then scored on a double by Kevin Nieveld. Hereafter, Wendell Floranus was inserted as new pitcher, but he gave up a runscoring single to Aidan Finnegan, who advanced on an error. Finnegan reached third base on another error, then scored the fourth run in the inning on a wild pitch.

With his team leading 13-8, Clara gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and Denzel Brooks (fielder's choice) on first base, Joran Berkhout singled. Brooks advanced to third base on the basehit, then scored when a throwing error followed. On the error, Berkhout moved to second base, then later advanced on a wild pitch. He stranded there, as a grounder closed the at bat. It also ended the game, as the 10:30 PM curfew-time had been reached.
