Rob Cordemans writes history with 200th win in Amsterdam Pirates-shutout vs. Storks
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - Pitcher Rob Cordemans wrote history tonight, as the 45-year old veteran righthander added another chapter to his already impressive career by winning his 200th regular season-game. L&D Amsterdam Pirates opened the 3-game series against Silicon Storks on Friday-evening (September 4) with a big 11-0 shutout in 6½ inning. The game was cancelled due to rain on Thursday-evening and was re-scheduled for tonight.

Cordemans was also announced as starting pitcher for Thursday's game. When that game rained out, his start moved up one day and he took the mound tonight for Pirates.

With Amsterdam Pirates leading 11-0, Cordemans returned to the mound in the top of the fifth inning to complete the required five innings a starter needs to throw to become the winning pitcher. In the fifth, Storks got its first runner in scoring position after an error and an one-out single. With runners on first and second base, Cordemans struckout his fourth batter. A force play then ended the inning. With that, at 9:09 PM, the fifth inning Cordemans needed to become the pitcher-of-record ended. He now had to wait for the final out in the game. Nick Veltkamp and Matz Schutte threw the sixth and seventh inning in the 11-0 victory. And at 9:38 PM, the 200th win for Cordemans was in the books.

Tonight was the final chance for Cordemans to reach the milestone this season, as this was his final start of the regular season for Pirates. In case Cordemans would not be the winning pitcher tonight, he would have to wait until next season to reach the mark. Of course, Cordemans will make more appearances for Pirates in the upcoming weeks, but these won't count in his career-totals, as they will be done in the post-season.

In his previous start last Thursday, Cordemans threw three innings to reach the 2.000 innings pitched mark (he now has 2.006). The record of innings pitched is 2.282 and is held by Bart Volkerijk. A week earlier, Cordemans broke another old Volkerijk-record when he appeared in his 334th game as a pitcher. The old record was 333.

Cordemans had a chance to record the 200th win in his first start of the season. On July 23, which was Opening Night, the righthander threw 4 2/3 inning against Curaçao Neptunus with Amsterdam leading 3-1. He needed only 1/3 inning to become the pitcher-of-record. However, he was then hit on hit arm by a hard comeback-grounder and left the game. He returned to the mound almost one month later, but in his next two starts, he pitched two and three innings respectively. With that, tonight's win was also his first (and only) of this season.

With his 200th win, Cordemans not only becomes the first picher in Dutch baseball-history to reach this milestone. He also became the first pitcher with 200 wins, 2.000 strikeouts and 2.000 innings pitched.

He reached the 2.000 strikeout milestone last season.

Tonight's game was one of three that rained out on Thursday. Two games were re-scheduled for tonight, the third will be part of a double-header on Saturday. These four series, which will be completed on Sunday, are the final ones of the regular season. The postseason opens next Thursday, September 10.

Tonight, Pirates scored its runs in the first four innings, highlighted by a 5-run rally in the fourth. The team collected only eight basehits, including five doubles. Denzel Richardson and rookie Jair van Borkulo both batted in three runs, while Kalian Sams scored three runs. Storks, which lost its ninth consecutive game, recorded only three basehits off of three pitchers.

(September 4)

Amsterdam Pirates-pitcher Rob Cordemans encountered no problems in the five innings he threw. The righthander got six baserunners, but only one of them got into scoring position. Cordemans struckout four batters to raise his career total to 2.053, which is an extention of the all-time record.

With two outs in the first inning, Luuk Visser reached on an error for Storks. He stranded on first base, as a comeback-grounder by Ibrahin Redan ended the at bat.

Storks also reached base with two outs in both the second and third inning. In the second, Sydney Hoeverts singled with two outs, but a pop-fly followed. In the third, Cordemans struckout the first two batters, then gave up a single to Jurian Hansen. This time, a flyout to centerfield ended the inning.

Cordemans retired the side in the fourth inning, then saw lead-off hitter Sydney Hoeverts reach base in the fifth on an error. With one out, he came into scoring position when pinch-hitter Stephen Henson singled. Cordemans followed with a strikeout, then a force out ended the at bat.

That concluded the fifth inning Cordemans threw tonight to make him the pitcher-of-record, as his team was leading at the moment he left the mound. However, he had to wait for the conclusion of the game to secure his 200th career win and write baseball-history.

Storks-starter Twan Naessens retired the side in the bottom of the first inning, but then gave up the first two runs in the second at bat.

Kalian Sams led off the second inning for Pirates with a walk, stole second base, then scored on a following double by Denzel Richardson. After next batter Kenny Berkenbosch walked, a double-steal gave the home-team runners on second and third base. Moments later, Richardson scored the second run on a sacrifice fly by Jair van Borkulo.

Four runs were added in the third inning. Delano Selassa led off with a walk, then reached second base safely when a throwing error was made on a force play-grounder by Sharlon Schoop. The next four batters then produced runscoring hits. First, Gilmer Lampe and Kalian Sams hit back-to-back RBI-doubles. Next, Lampe scored on a grounder by Denzel Richardson and Sams scored on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Berkenbosch which lifted the lead to 6-0.

A 5-run rally followed with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Delano Selassa doubled and scored when Gilmer Lampe reached on a throwing error. When next batter Kalian Sams walked, Storks went to the bullpen. William Sowers took over from Twan Naessens, but was greeted with three RBI-basehits. Denzel Richardson connected for a runscoring single, then Kenny Berkenbosch delivered an RBI-double and Jair van Borkulo followed with a 2-run single. And that made it an 11-0 score.

In the next two innings, Pirates was held scoreless by Sowers. The team got three baserunners in these at bats, but none of them got into scoring position.

With Amsterdam Pirates leading 11-0, lefthander Nick Veltkamp relieved Rob Cordemans in the top of the sixth inning and retired the side (one strikeout).

In the seventh inning, Matz Schutte pitched for Pirates. The righthander also retired the side.

At 9:38 PM, Storks-first baseman Brian Raap hit the ball in the air, which then was caught by second baseman Delano Selassa. That ended the game. Baseball-history was written at that moment, as Rob Cordemans has just become the first pitcher in history with 200 career wins.
