Hoofddorp Pioniers nips Neptunus; Lars Broersen goes distance
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers won 2-1 against Curaçao Neptunus in the finale of their 3-game series on Sunday (September 6) to close the regular season.

With the win, Pioniers handed Neptunus its second loss of the season. On July 23, which was Opening Night, Neptunus lost 8-3 to reigning champion L&D Amsterdam Pirates. Neptunus suffered both losses in a home-game. The team also opened and closed the regular season with a loss.

For Pioniers, this was its first win in an away-game against Neptunus since July 22, 2017 when it won with a 6-4 score.

On Thursday-evening, the series-opener ended in a 6-6 tie. That game ended after nine complete inning, due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule.

On Saturday, Neptunus trailed after two innings, had two rallies, but decided the game in the eighth inning to win 11-5.

Today, righthander Lars Broersen went the distance for Pioniers and gave up only four basehits. In its previous nine games, Neptunus collected 11 or more basehits each time. The four hits are the lowest for Neptunus since it recorded three earlier this season against DSS/Kinheim in a 5-2 win on July 30.

On July 7 last year, Broersen also threw a 9-inning complete game against Neptunus at home in Hoofddorp in what was then an 1-0 loss.

Pioniers collected five basehits, which were all hit off of starter Orlando Yntema, who was credited with his first loss. Before today, the righthander was 6-0. One of the hits came from the bat of Victor Draijer, who batted 1-for-2 before leaving the game. With his basehit, Draijer extended his hitting streak to 20 games since the start of the season. As he batted .500 today, his batting average also remained .500.

Coming Tuesday-evening, the remainder of the halted game of Pioniers against Quick Amersfoort is scheduled, but it is still not confirmed whether or not this will be played. Last weekend, the game was halted with one out in the bottom of the fifth with the visiting Pioniers leadung 3-0, meaning it needed only two-thirds to become a valid game. The game was halted by rain, but then was definitively stopped by the umpiring crew when nothing was done to prepare the playing field, according to the reports of that game.

When the remainder will be played, Draijer already has secured extending his hitting streak to 21 games, as he already had recorded two basehits in the first part of the game. He is 2-for-2, which means that when he goes hitless in two at bats on Tuesday, he will close the season with a .500 batting average. When he is hitless in three at bats, his average will drop under .500.

In the meantime, it also has become clear that righthanded pitcher Lars Huijer has left the team of Hoofddorp Pioniers. On Saturday, Huijer made his debut in the German Bundesliga, as he was the starting pitcher for Heidenheim Heideköpfe.

The first two innings remained scoreless today, then both teams scored in the third at bat.

Pioniers got its first runner in scoring position off of starter Orlando Yntema in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Yntema walked Max Draijer, then hit next batter Joey Eeman with a pitch. But they both were left behind.

In the second inning, Yntema walked Jaison Gijsbertha with two outs. He stranded on first base.

The veteran righthander then gave up two runs in the top of the third, which would be decisive. Mark Smit led off with a single, then Victor Draijer also singled, which led to runners on second and third base. With his basehit, Draijer extended his hitting streak to 20 games. Yntema, who needed a lot of pitches, then got the bases loaded when he walked Max Draijer. The first run was then scored when Yntema uncorked a wild pitch. He struckout Joey Eeman, but then gave up a runscoring single to Duco Nuijten, which gave Pioniers a 2-0 lead. With runners at the corners, Nuijten stole second base. But Pioniers left the runners behind on second and third base. In the remainder of the game, Pioniers didn't get another runner in scoring position.

Yntema recovered and retired the side in the fourth inning. In the fifth, he gave up a lead-off single to Nathan Berkel. He was inserted as pinch-hitter for Victor Draijer, who was 1-for-2. With that, his overall batting average remained .500. When the remainder of the halted game of Pioniers against Quick Amersfoort is not played on coming Tuesday, Draijer will close the season with a .500 batting average. Afterwards, it was stated that Draijer was not replaced today to secure his high batting average. He simply left due to a minor injury. His replacement Berkel was later caught stealing.

In the sixth, Reangelo Willems singled for Pioniers with one out, but he also was caught stealing. Yntema then walked next batter Jorrit Penseel, but he stranded on first base.

Kevin Kelly took over the Neptunus-pitching in the seventh inning. With one out, he walked Mark Smit, but he became the third Pioniers-runner to be caught stealing. All three caught stealing-situations were accomplished by catcher Gianison Boekhoudt and short stop John Polonius. Hereafter, Kelly retired the next seven batters he faced.

Lars Broersen went the distance for Pioniers and had a fine outing. The righthander needed 115 pitches and gave up only four basehits.

Neptunus also got on base in its first at bat, but got its first runner in scoring position in the third at bat. In the first inning, Broersen walked lead-off hitter Stijn van der Meer, but he was forced out on a grounder by John Polonius. Moments later, Polonius was caught stealing after Broersen stepped off the plate and got the ball in time to short stop Max Draijer, who then awaited the runner to tag him out.

With Pioniers leading 2-0, Neptunus got one run back in the bottom of the third. Darryl Collins led off with a triple down the rightfield-line, which led to some discussion whether the ball was fair or foul. Moments later, Collins scored on a following single by Shaldimar Daantji. Another single followed, this time hit by Coco Johnson. A sacrifice bunt by Stijn van der Meer then gave Neptunus runners on second and third base with one out. But they were left behind, as a grounder and flyout ended the at bat.

In the remainder of the game, Neptunus got only two more runners in scoring position.

In the fourth, with one out and Benjamin Dille (fielder's choice) on first base, Dudley Leonora singled. With runners on first and second base, two flyouts followed.

With one out in the fifth, Stijn van der Meer reached on an error, but he was forced out on a grounder to third baseman Jorrit Penseel. Hereafter, Lars Broersen retired the side in the sixth.

In the seventh inning, Broersen hit lead-off hitter Darryl Collins with a pitch. But with one out, he was eliminated at first base when Coco Johnson flied out. After catching the ball, rightfielder Nathan Berkel got the ball in time to first baseman Duco Nuijten to complete a double play.

Broersen retired the side again in the eighth, then got his final runner in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, he walked pinch-hitter Gregory Muller and his pinch-runner Jarreau Martina stole second base. Hereafter, Broersen struckout Dudley Leonora. The inning and the game then ended when second baseman Raul Jacobs caught a line drive from Darryl Collins.
