Quick Amersfoort decides game vs. DSS/Kinheim with two productive innings
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - Quick Amersfoort had two productive innings today, but nipped DSS/Kinheim 7-6 on Sunday (September 6) in the third game of their last series of the regular season.

On Friday-evening, the first game of their series ended in a 13-9 win for DSS/Kinheim. On Thursday, the opener was one of three games that rained out.

On Saturday, Quick Amersfoort won 14-7 to end a 6-game losing streak.

With today's game, the regular season ended for DSS/Kinheim. Quick Amersfoort has one game left against Hoofddorp Pioniers. Last weekend, the game was halted with one out in the bottom of the fifth with the visiting Pioniers leading 3-0, meaning it needed only two-thirds to become a valid game. The game was halted by rain, but then was definitively stopped by the umpiring crew when nothing was done to prepare the playing field, according to the reports of that game. Coming Tuesday-evening, the remainder of the game is scheduled, but it is still not confirmed whether or not it will be played.

Today, DSS/Kinheim led twice, but Quick Amersfoort scored three runs in both the second and fifth inning, which proved to be decisive.

Quick was outhit 9-7. Ademar Rifaela accounted for two of the seven Quick-basehits, including a homerun. Rachid Engelhardt also had two basehits.

Kevin Nieveld, Jeldwin Orman and Donny Kuijper all recorded two hits for DSS/Kinheim. Nieveld batted in three runs.

(September 6)

DSS/Kinheim got into scoring position right away in the first inning, took the lead twice, but nevertheless ended up empty-handed.

In the top of the first inning, Jochem Koedijk walked with one out for the Haarlem-team, then Jeldwin Orman singled off of starter Jhan Rifaela. But the lefthander was then supported with an inning-ending double play.

DSS/Kinheim then opened the score in the second at bat. Rifaela then got the bases loaded via three walks. He first walked Aidan Finnegan and Donny Kuijper, who advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Marcel Tolenaars. The bases got loaded when Rifaela also walked Nick Hofer. Moments later, the first run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Bram Blokker.

Quick Amersfoort also got into scoring position in its first at bat off of Bas Timmer, who made his first start of the season. With one out, Timmer, also a lefthander, walked Joran Berkhout, then gave up a single to Rachid Engelhardt. A line drive by next batter Tijmen Takke was caught by third baseman Kevin Nieveld. That was followed by a successful double-steal, but the runners were left behind on second and third base.

Trailing 1-0, Quick rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Lead-off hitter Taylor Clemensia was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Emeron Lourens. Clemensia advanced to third base on an infield-hit by Rowan van Hoek and thereafter, Quick got the bases loaded when Denzel Brooks walked. A short grounder towards second base by Roger Bernadina led to the elimination of the batter, but it enabled Clemensia to score the tying run. Hereafter, Joran Berkhout delivered a 2-run double that made it a 3-1 score. The inning ended when Berkhout was caught stealing at third base moments later.

The third and fourth inning both remained scoreless. In the top of the third, Jochem Koedijk led off for DSS/Kinheim with a bunt-single, but later stranded on third base. The team was retired in order in the fourth. Quick got into scoring position in both at bats. In the third, Tijmen Takke was hit by a pitch with one out, then was left behind on second base. And in the fourth, Rowan van Hoek walked with one out, but ended the inning on third base.

In the top of the fifth, DSS/Kinheim re-took the lead when it scored three runs. While no errors were made, all three runs were unearned. Bram Blokker led off with a single, but Thomas Bos then grounded into a double play. Hereafter, Jhan Rifaela walked Jochem Koedijk. The lefthander then struckout next batter Jeldwin Orman, but the third strike ended in a passed ball, which led to runners at first and second base. As this was a strikeout-passed ball, it would have been the third out. But now, DSS/Kinheim had two baserunners with two outs. Kevin Nieveld followed with a runscoring single, then the bases got loaded when Aidan Finnegan walked. Next batter Donny Kuijper connected well and hit a single that enabled both Orman and Nieveld to score to put DSS/Kinheim ahead 4-3. Kuijper tried to advance to second base, but was eliminated there. That ended the inning, but DSS/Kinheim was leading for the second time.

Again, the lead was shortlived, as Quick Amersfoort also staged a 3-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Rachid Engelhardt reached second base on a throwing error and moved to third base on a wild pitch, then Tijmen Takke walked. With runners at the corners, a pitching change followed. Rick Timmermans took over, but his third pitch to Ademar Rifaela ended over the fence down the rightfield-line for a 3-run homerun. And with, Quick now led 6-4.

DSS/Kinheim got one run back in the top of the seventh. Thomas Bos led off with a single and moved on a passed ball and a flyout. With one out, Jeldwin Orman walked, which led to the first pitching change for Quick. Jasper Popken took over. He saw Orman steal second base, then got a sacrifice fly from Kevin Nieveld which made it a 6-5 score. The inning ended with a pop-fly.

In the bottom of the seventh, Quick added an insurance run. Joran Berkhout led off with a walk and advanced to third base on a following single by Rachid Engelhardt. Hereafter, Steven van Groningen took over the pitching from Rick Timmermans and gave up a sacrifice fly to Tijmen Takke. Ademar Rifaela singled hereafter, then Taylor Clemensia grounded into an inning-ending double play, but Quick now led 7-5.

DSS/Kinheim got a runner on third base in the top of the eighth inning. Donny Kuijper led off with a single, then his pinch-runner Wesley van Hemert was awarded second base on a balk and moved to third base on a grounder by Nick Hofer, but then was left behind.

In the top of the ninth, with Quick leading 7-5, Wendell Floranus took over the pitching. While he didn't throw that effectively, gave up a run and got the bases loaded with one out, he was credited with a save, as he entered the game in a save-situation. Floranus began with a strikeout, but then hit Jochem Koedijk with a pitch, then gave up a single to Jeldwin Orman and a runscoring single to Kevin Nieveld, which made it a 7-6 score. Orman moved to third base and Nieveld to second base on the throw to third base. Next, Floranus got the bases loaded when he walked Aidan Finnegan. Floranus then struckout next batter Wesley van Hemert. The runscoring threat, the inning and the game then ended when a grounder by Marcel Tolenaars ended in a force out.
