(Story by Marco Stoovelaar; Photo by Henk Seppen) Fifth round of games in Dutch big league was to be completed this weekend Nederlands HOOFDDORP / HAARLEM / THE HAGUE / OOSTERHOUT / AMSTERDAM / ROTTERDAM / AMERSFOORT / BUSSUM (Neth.) - The fifth 3-game series of the 2020 regular season in the Dutch big league was scheduled to be completed this weekend, May 16 and 17. However, the baseball-season is on hold, as all regular season-games have been annuled through June 30 because of measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. New dates have not yet been announced. From March 12 on, the Government of the Netherlands regularly announced several (stricter) measures due to the coronavirus. On Wednesday (May 6), there was another update regarding the measures and a little more freedom was announced then. For children and youngsters to 18 years old, some sports-activities were allowed. Also, from May 11 on, atletes of 19 and older can do some outside sports with each other. In all cases, a 1,5 meter social distance has to be observed. But it was also announced that official games and competitions remain not possible through September 1. (© Photo: Henk Seppen) On Tuesday (May 12), the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) announced that it has annuled all official regular season games in all baseball/softball leagues through Tuesday, June 30. The KNBSB is in talks with the NOC*NSF (Netherlands Olympic Committee/Netherlands Sports Federations) regarding options how to continue, as it still hopes a new season can be played this year. Article regarding annulment games KNBSB through June 30 With the inclusion of the additional games that were annulled on May 12 (up to June 30), a total of 453 regular season-games have now been scrubbed in the highest leagues of Dutch baseball and softball (93 Baseball Big League, 156 Baseball Overgangsklasse, 80 Softball Golden League, 80 Softball Silver League, 44 Men Softball First Division). Hundreds more have been cancelled in lower divisions. In the newly added period from June 8 through June 30, no games were scheduled in the Dutch baseball big league, as the Baseball Final Qualifier and Haarlem Baseball Week were also scheduled in this period. Early March, the Olympic Qualifier (April 1-5) was moved to June 17-21, but was postponed to next year when the Olympic Games was also moved to next year at the end of March. Also at the end of March, the 30th edition of the Haarlem Baseball Week was cancelled. However, since both events were scrubbed, the now free game-days probably would have been used when it would have been possible to play regular season-games. In softball, the European Championship was scheduled for women (June 7-13) and men (June 22-27). Both events were postponed to September/October in early April. But in early May, the two Championships were postponed to next year. We don't know when, but baseball and softball of course also will be back in the Netherlands! Of course only when it is safe to do so for everyone involved. Until then, take care and stay safe! Saturday was very cloudy initially and sometimes chilly, but in the late afternoon/early evening, the clouds cleared and the sky was blue and sunny.
