DSS/Kinheim rallies in 7th inning to record second win vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - DSS/Kinheim came from behind and had a decisive rally in the seventh inning to win 10-6 on Sunday (May 9), winning its second game against Hoofddorp Pioniers.

In the opener on Thursday, DSS/Kinheim trailed three times, then scored twice on two outfield-errors with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning to win 6-5. On Saturday, the next game in Hoofddorp rained out and will be made up on Tuesday-evening.

Today, it was DSS/Kinheim that saw a lead being erased. The team led 3-1, but trailed 4-3 halfway the sixth inning, came alongide, but trailed again 6-4 halfway the seventh. The home-team then rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh and that was decisive to turn the game its way.

DSS/Kinheim collected fifteen basehits, including three by rookie Jason Jakobus and Aidan Finnegan, who played in his first game of the season. Hoofddorp Pioniers had ten basehits with three players hitting two.

Before the game, there was a moment of silence in remembrance of Kinheim club-icon Wim Oosterhof, who passed away on May 4 at age 93. Wim Oosterhof has made a big contribution to the development of baseball, as he has been a longtime boardmember of the both the Netherlands Softball Association and Netherlands Baseball Association, as well as the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Association, which was created in December 1970 after the baseball- and softball-associations merged. He also has been a longtime member of the Organizing Committee of the Haarlem Baseball Week and was inducted into the Netherlands Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame.

DSS/Kinheim took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning and led 3-1 after five innings. Hoofddorp Pioniers then scored three runs in the sixth to take 4-3 lead, but saw DSS/Kinheim come alongside. In the seventh, Pioniers re-took the lead (6-4). This time, the home-team answered with a 5-run rally to decide the outcome.

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Pioniers-starter Ryan Huntington hit Jochem Koedijk with a pitch and gave up a single to Jason Jakobus, but then struckout his second and third batter. But in the second inning, the lefthander gave up two runs to DSS/Kinheim. With one out and Nick Hofer (fielder's choice) on first base, Marcel Tolenaars singled. When an outfield-error was made, Hofer moved to third base. He then scored when Tolenaars was forced out on a grounder by Bram Blokker. Moments later, Blokker stole second base and scored on a following single by Thomas Bos.

DSS/Kinheim-starter Glenn Wassink retired the first seven batters he faced. With one out in the third, the righthander walked Jair Bogaerts, but he stranded on first base. With one out in the fourth, Wassink gave up a homerun to Randolph Oduber, who also homered in the opener on Thursday. Wassink retired the side again in the fifth.

After having scored in the second inning, DSS/Kinheim got on base again in the third and fourth, but was unable to score. With two outs in the third, Milan Lammerts walked and Aidan Finnegan singled, but Ryan Huntington closed with a strikeout. With one out in the fifth, Bram Blokker singled. He was then eliminated in a double play, as he returned too late to first base after next batter Thomas Bos flied out to rightfield.

DSS/Kinheim added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jochem Koedijk and Jason Jakobus opened the at bat with a bunt-single. With two outs, Koedijk scored on a double by Aidan Finnegan, who played in his first game of the season. He was unable to play in the first four games.

In the top of the sixth, Pioniers rallied for three runs to take a 4-3 lead. Duco Nuijten led off with a bunt-single and Raul Jacobs singled. Hereafter, it was Mark Smit, who successfully placed a bunt-single. When that was followed by a throwing error, Nuijten scored and the other runners also advanced. Pioniers then got the bases loaded when Randolph Oduber walked. Moments later, Jacobs scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Denzel Brooks. A single by Tyler Boersma re-loaded the bases. Glenn Wassink then struckout the next batter, but he walked Jorrit Penseel, which brought in Smit and gave Pioniers a 4-3 lead. However, three runners were left behind when Jair Bogaerts flied out.

The lead was shortlived, as DSS/Kinheim came alongside in the bottom of the sixth by scoring an unearned run. Marcel Tolenaars led off with a single, then his pinch-runner Mick van Vliet moved into scoring position thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Bram Blokker. Van Vliet moved to third base on a grounder by Thomas Bos, then scored the tying run on a passed ball.

In the top of the seventh inning, Pioniers took the lead for the second time by scoring two runs off of new pitcher Rick Timmermans. Duco Nuijten led off with a single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Raul Jacobs and scored on a triple by Mark Smit. Powerhitter Randolph Oduber was then walked intentionally, but Denzel Brooks followed with a sacrifice fly, which made it a 6-4 in favor of Pioniers.

DSS/Kinheim then definitively turned the game its way with a 5-run rally in the bottom of the seventh off of three pitchers. Ryan Huntington began by striking out his seventh batter, but then gave up a single to Donny Kuijper and walked Milan Lammerts. With these two runners on base, Nathan Diaby took over the pitching, but ran into problems. First, Daan Kuit, who was inserted as pinch-runner for Kuijper, moved to third base on a passed ball. Kuit, who last season played for Pioniers, then scored on single by Aidan Finnegan. Nick Hofer followed with a double that brought in Lammerts and Finnegan and gave DSS/Kinheim a 7-6 lead. When next batter Mick van Vliet walked, Lucca van der Schouw took over the pitching for Pioniers. The lefthander was greeted with a single by Bram Blokker, which loaded the bases. Blokker was then forced out on a grounder by Thomas Bos. On this grounder, Hofer scored, but when a throwing error followed in an attempt to complete a double play, Van Vliet also scored to make it a 9-6 score.

In the top of the eighth inning, Pioniers got its lead-off hitter on base, as Jeldwin Orman singled off of new pitcher Moreno Vork. But hereafter, Orman, who last season played for DSS/Kinheim, was eliminated at first base in a double play after next batter Joost van den Bergh flied out to rightfield.

DSS/Kinheim added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Daan Kuit (fielder's choice) stole second base and scored on a double by Milan Lammerts.

Pioniers got a final scoring opportunity in the top of the ninth. With one out, Raul Jacobs and pinch-hitter Bodhi de Vreede both singled. A foul-fly and a force out then ended the game.
