Neptunus records 5th mercy-rule win of season vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus won 13-1 in seven innings in the series-opener against Hoofddorp Pioniers on Thursday-afternoon (May 13). With that, the team recorded its fifth mercy-rule win in seven games played so far and its third in a row.

For Neptunus, this was its seventh win in a row to remain unbeaten. For Pioniers, this was its fifth loss in six games and fourth in a row.

Neptunus collected 16 basehits in today's game, including three by veteran player Shaldimar Daantji. He played in his first game of the season, after having been sidelined with a groin-injury, which he sustained during the In Memoriam Charles Urbanus Sr. Tournament last month. Daantji scored twice and batted in one run.

Three Neptunus-runs were batted in by Dwayne Kemp, who today played in his 500th regular season-game. He played most of these games for Neptunus, except for 68 games he played for Sparta-Feyenoord in 2006 and 2007.

Three players accounted for the five basehits that Pioniers recorded off of three pitchers. Denzel Brooks and Jeldwin Orman both had two, Jorrit Penseel hit one.

Oliver van der Wijst Severino played in his first game of the season for Pioniers. He started as third baseman and was 0-for-2, but also committed two errors. Until last Friday, Van der Wijst was on the roster of HCAW, for whom he played in some exhibition games. This season, the infielder will play for Templiers de Sénart in the French competition, which opens somewhere in June. He travels back and forth to Paris to be with Sénart in the weekend, but will be eligible to play for Pioniers during the week.

Van der Wijst earlier was on the roster of Pioniers in the 2017 and 2018 seasons. In those seasons, he also played professionally in the organization of the Houston Astros. In these two seasons, he played in 45 games in the Rookie League-team of Houston based in the Dominican Republic, where he was born. Because of his professional career, he didn't play for Pioniers in 2017. But after being released in June 2018, the infielder played in nine games for Pioniers in the remainder of the season.

Last season, Van der Wijst was on the roster of L&D Amsterdam Pirates, but didn't play for the team. He then played for Nettuno BC 1945 in the Serie A2, the second highest league in Italy.

Van der Wijst made his debut playing in one game for Amsterdam Pirates in 2014. He then transfered to Kinheim, but didn't play in the main-squad during the 2015 season. After having played for Kinheim in 2016, he transfered to Pioniers. In 2019, he played a full season for HCAW.

Neptunus took an early lead by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. With a 5-0 lead after four innings, the Rotterdam-squad took more distance to reach a mercy-rule run-difference.

In the top of the first inning, Neptunus scored three runs off of John Michael Halley. The righthander walked Stijn van der Meer and John Polonius, then gave up a runscoring single to Dwayne Kemp. On this basehit, Polonius advanced to third base and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Roger Bernadina. Hereafter, Kemp moved to third base on a single by Dudley Leonora and scored the third run in the inning when a balk was called.

Neptunus added a run in the second inning when Quintin de Cuba led off with a single, advanced on an infield-hit by Shaldimar Daantji and a force play-grounder by Stijn van der Meer, then scored on a sacrifice fly by John Polonius.

Neptunus was retired in order in the third inning. The team scored an unearned run in the fourth, but also left three runners behind. De Cuba led off with a single and with one out, Van der Meer walked. The bases got loaded when a force play-grounder by Polonius ended in an error. De Cuba then scored on a 2-out single by Roger Bernadina, who then was forced out, meaning three runners were left behind.

In the fifth inning, off of three pitchers, Neptunus again scored three runs, two of them unearned. Lead-off hitter Benjamin Dille reached on an error and moved to third base on a single by Dashenko Ricardo. With runners on the corners, Mathijs Oosterbeek became the new pitcher for Pioniers. He got a quick first out, but then gave up an RBI-single to Shaldimar Daantji and got the bases loaded when Stijn van der Meer also singled. Antoher run was then scored when John Polonius walked , which led to the next pitching change. Lefthander Sebastian Kok took over and he got a force play-grounder from Dwayne Kemp. However, in an attempt to force out Daantji at the plate, an error was made. Neptunus again left three runners behind, as a foul-out and groundout followed.

Trailing 8-0, Pioniers scored what would be its lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Neptunus-starter Diegomar Markwell, who is closing in on his 150th big league-victory, as well as his 1,000th career strikeout, encountered no problems in the first four innings. In those at bats, the veteran lefthander allowed only one batter to reach base. After having retired the first seven batters in a row, Markwell gave up an one-out single to Jeldwin Orman in the third. He then retired the next six batters again.

With one out in the fifth inning, Markwell gave up three basehits, which resulted in the run. Denzel Brooks reached on an infield-hit, moved to third base on a single Jorrit Penseel and scored on a double by Jeldwin Orman. But Penseel and Orman stranded on third and second base, as a grounder and strikeout ended the at bat.

In the top of the sixth, Neptunus rallied for six runs to raise the lead to 13-1. Gregory Muller led off with a single and Dashenko Ricardo doubled to begin the rally. Muller then scored on a sacrifice fly by Quintin de Cuba, but that also led to a double play, as Ricardo was eliminated trying to advance to third base. With two outs, Neptunus added four more runs. The bases got loaded when Shaldimar Daantji, Stijn van der Meer and John Polonius all singled. Reangelo Willems then became the new pitcher, but he was greeted with a 2-run single by Dwayne Kemp. The bases got loaded again when Roger Bernadina walked and thereafter, it was Dudley Leonora, who delivered a 2-run single. Willems closed with a strikeout, but Neptunus had reached a mercy-rule run-difference.

Markwell's successor Misja Harcksen retired the side in the sixth inning, then Kevin Bakker threw the seventh inning. With one out, he gave up a single to Denzel Brooks. He moved on a grounder, but he was left behind, as a flyout ended the game.
