Nederlands

PUEBLA (Mexico) - The Netherlands Baseball Team opened the WBSC Baseball Final Qualifier in Puebla (Mexico) on Wednesday-evening (June 23) with a 9-3 loss against Venezuela. On Tuesday, Venezuela lost its first game of the event with a 10-7 score against the Dominican Republic.

The Orange Team will play its next game on Thursday against the Dominicans.

The team that finishes in first place advances to the all-deciding Final on Saturday. The other two teams will meet in a Play-Off on Friday with the winner becoming the second finalist.

The winner of the tournament becomes the sixth and final country to qualify for the Olympic Games next month in Japan.

(June 22)

Venezuela struck early with two runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Diegomar Markwell, who played in his 100th international game for the Netherlands. The lefthander walked lead-off hitter Alexis Amarista, then gave up a single to Hernán Pérez. The two then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Danry Vasquez and both scored when Alexander Palma followed with a double.

From there, Venezuela expanded its lead, while its pitching held the Netherlands scoreless in the first five innings.

Venezuela added a run in the top of the second. With one out, Alexis Amarista walked again. He moved to third base when an outfield-error followed a single by Hernán Pérez, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Danry Vasquez.

Venezuela increased its lead with two more runs in the fifth inning off of Mike Bolsenbroek, who had relieved Markwell in the third inning. With one out, Luis Sardiñas reached when first baseman Juremi Profar made an error on his grounder. He then scored on a double by Diego Rincones, which led to the next pitching change. Kevin Kelly took over, but was greeted with an RBI-double by Gorkys Hernández, which lifted the lead to 5-0.

Venezuela used eight pitchers. Jhonathan Díaz started and retired the side in the first inning. Henry Centeno then took over in the next inning. He gave up a 2-out single to Calten Daal, but then closed with a strikeout.

The third Venezuelan pitcher took the mound in the third inning. He gave up a lead-off double to Sicnarf Loopstok, then an one-out single to Jiandido Tromp, who played in his first official international game for the Orange Team. But with runners on first and third base, the inning ended when Roger Bernadina grounded into a double play.

In the fourth, the Netherlands got another baserunner when Sharlon Schoop singled with two outs, but he stranded on first base.

Another pitching change followed in the fifth. Danny Rondón took over and retired the side. But with Venezuela leading 5-0, Rondón gave up the first Orange-run in the sixth. Jiandido Tromp and Roger Bernadina opened with singles which led to runners at the corners. Tromp then scored on a sacrifice fly by Juremi Profar. Hereafter, the inning again ended with a double play, this time on a grounder by pinch-runner Ademar Rifaela.

Venezuela was held scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning. First by Kevin Kelly in the sixth, then by Juan Carlos Sulbaran in the seventh and eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Venezuela decided the game with a 4-run rally to increase the lead to 9-1. Shairon Martis became the new pitcher for the Netherlands. The righthander gave up a lead-off single to Danry Vasquez, but he was eliminated when he tried to stretch it into a double. Hereafter, Martis ran into problems. He walked Alexander Palma, then gave up a single to Luis Sardiñas. Palma then scored when short stop Calten Daal made an error on a possible double play-grounder by Diego Rincones. Next, the bases got loaded when Gorkys Hernández singled and a run was scored when Martis walked next batter Dennis Ortega. With the bases still loaded and one out, Arij Fransen was inserted as new pitcher. With that, the young righthander made his debut in the Netherlands Team. Fransen hit Cristian Pérez with a pitch, which led to the next run, then a sacrifice fly by Alexis Amarista brought in the fourth run.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Netherlands was able to score two runs of its own. Arcenio León became the seventh pitcher for Venezuela, but he gave up a lead-off single to Ademar Rifaela. His pinch-runner John Polonius then scored when next batter Sharlon Schoop homered. But that was to be it. Calten Daal walked and moved on a grounder by Denzel Richardson. With two outs, Curt Smith also walked. With two runners on base, Kender Villegas became the eighth Venezuelan pitcher. He struckout Jiandido Tromp to end the game.
