When a player is designated for assignment, he is removed from the 40-man roster. Within seven days of the transaction, the player can be traded or placed on irrevocable outright waivers. When the player is claimed by another club, he is immediately added to that team's 40-man roster. At that moment, the new club can option the player to the Minor Leagues or put him in the active 26-man Major League-roster. When a player is not claimed, he can be sent to the Minor Leagues or be released. Players with more than three years of Major League service time may reject the Minor League-assignment to become a Free Agent.

After having a good first half of the 2021 season, Schoop signed a 2-year contract extension with Detroit, worth 15 million Dollars.

Schoop played his last game last Thursday against Oakland A's and he then was 1-for-3 and batted in one run with a sacrifice fly. This season, Schoop played in 55 games, but hits only .213 (29-for-136) with eight doubles and no triples or homeruns. Schoop scored 15 runs and batted in only seven. Last year, the infielder finished the season with a .202 batting average (97 basehits) with eleven homeruns and 38 runs batted in.

The year before (2021), Schoop batted .278 (173 basehits), scored 85 runs, belted 22 homeruns and had 84 RBI's. His 173 hits, 85 runs and 84 RBI's were his best stats since setting career-highs in 2017 (182 hits, 92 runs, 105 RBI's).

Jonathan Schoop made his Major League-debut in 2013 when he was with Baltimore Orioles. In July 2018, Baltimore traded Schoop to Milwaukee Brewers, but became a Free Agent after that season. In December 2018, Schoop signed with Minnesota Twins, for whom he played in the 2019 season. He then signed with Detroit in December 2019.

Schoop mostly played at second base, but since last month, Zack Short became the prime second baseman. With that, Schoop became a back-up player and was used at third base more and also was a platoon player.

In his eleven Major League-seasons so far, Schoop played in 1,188 games and collected 1,095 basehits, including 174 homeruns. He scored 557 runs and batted in 544.

In March of this year, Schoop participated with the Netherlands Team in the World Baseball Classic.
