Amsterdam Pirates opens series against DSS/Kinheim with win
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Amsterdam Pirates recorded its first victory of the new season on Thursday-evening (April 13) when it opened the 3-game series against DSS/Kinheim with a 6-1 win.

Last weekend, both teams were swept in the Opening Series. Pirates then lost three games against HCAW, which is the team without games in this round, due to the odd number (nine) of teams in the highest league. DSS/Kinheim ended up short against Curaçao Neptunus.

In tonight's game, Pirates collected ten basehits, including three by Denzel Richardson. DSS/Kinheim was limited to only four basehits.

A week ago, the pitching of the Haarlem-team held the Neptunus-offense both scoreless and hitless until the sixth inning. Today, the team gave up three runs in the first four at bats.

In the Opening Series of the season, Amsterdam Pirates scored only two runs against HCAW and was shutout twice. Tonight, the team opened the score in the third inning, scored six runs and never ran in big problems.

Pirates was retired in order in the first inning by starter Martijn Schoonderwoerd, but got its first runner in scoring position in the next at bat. Denzel Richardson led off with a single and stole second base with one out, then advanced on a following throwing error. With a runner now on third base, a strikeout and grounder followed.

But Pirates then struck with two runs in the top of the third. Jorrit Penseel led off with a double and Jason Jakobus followed with a single. The latter was then forced out on a grounder by Alex Madera, but in the meantime, Penseel scored. With Madera on first base, Jules Cremer hit a bad-hop single towards short stop Amarensio Franka. As the ball jumped away from him into centerfield, Madera was able to move not only to second, but also to third base. After Martijn Schoonderwoerd had struckout veteran Kenny Berkenbosch, he got the bases loaded when he walked Denzel Richardson. The righthander then gave up another run when he hit next batter Oliver van der Wijst Severino with a pitch. But with the bases still loaded, the inning ended when Cremer was picked off at third base by catcher Sem Kuijper.

Pirates added a run in the fourth. Roelie Henrique led off with a triple, then Luca van Gorkum walked. The first then scored when Jorrit Penseel grounded into a double play.

At this moment in the game, DSS/Kinheim trailed 3-0, but it was the home-team that got a chance to do some scoring in the first at bat off of starter Sven van de Sanden. But two runners were eliminated on the bases. Van de Sanden walked lead-off hitter Nick Hofer, but moments later, the righthander picked him off on first base. He then struckout Jochem Koedijk. With two outs, Van de Sanden gave up singles to Urving Kemp and Sem Kuijper, which led to runners at first and third base. The inning then ended when Kuijper was caught stealing at second base.

DSS/Kinheim stranded a runner on second base in the third inning, then got another runner in scoring-position again in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Sem Kuijper was more successful. After hitting a single, he stole second base, but was left behind there.

In the top of the sixth, Pirates scored its fourth run off of new pitcher Rick Rizvić. He got the bases loaded quickly, as he walked lead-off hitter Roelie Henrique, hit Luca van Gorkum with a pitch and also walked Jorrit Penseel. With one out, he gave up a runscoring single to Alex Madera, but then was supported with a double play.

Another Pirates-run was scored in the seventh. Kenny Berkenbosch and Denzel Richardson opened with singles, which led to a pitching-change. Ben Neijndorff took over and saw the runners advance on a grounder. Moments later, Berkenbosch scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 score.

DSS/Kinheim left another runner behind in scoring-position in the seventh off of Yassir Lachkar, who had taken over the Pirates-pitching in the previous inning. But in the eighth, the Haarlem-team scored what would be its lone run. Nick Hofer led off with a single and stole second base, then moved to third base when Jochem Koedijk reached on an error. With runners on first and third base, Michael Bennett took over the pitching from Lachkar. He got a force play-grounder from Urving Kemp, which ended in no outs, but enabled Hofer to score. With two runners on base, a foul pop-fly accounted for the first out. Kemp and Koedijk then executed a double-steal, but they were left behind on second and third base, as Bennett first struckout Koen Halderman, then caught a comeback line drive from Julian Toppen.

Amsterdam Pirates scored its sixth and final run in the top of the ninth. Again, Kenny Berkenbosch and Denzel Richardson led off with singles to put runners at the corners. Berkenbosch then scored on a sacrifice fly by Oliver van der Wijst Severino.

In the bottom of the ninth, Michael Bennett retired the side to end the game.
