UVV struck early today and already led 9-2 after three innings against Hoofddorp Pioniers.
The team added seven more runs, reached a 10-run difference, but was unable to end the game via the mercy-rule.
Due to five errors, only six of the sixteen UVV-runs were earned.
Veteran righthander Jurjen van Zijl started for UVV and retired the side in the top of the first inning.
Shortly thereafter, he was supported with the first run.
UVV scored its first unearned in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Kaien Oukes.
With one out, the lefthander hit Ryan Wheat with a pitch and with two outs, he walked Jorge Luis Espinal Ventura.
The two runners then executed a double-steal and when that was followed by a throwing error, Wheat was able to score his first of six runs in today's game.
Hoofddorp Pioniers answered with two runs in the top of the second inning.
Duncan Beljaards led off with a single, then Michael Dumitrescu and Vincent Mevissen followed with back-to-back, RBI-doubles to put Pioniers ahead, 2-1.
After Mevissen had advanced on a grounder by Miquel Willem, Thom Hoogkamer walked.
When next batter Daniel Heiligers had a full count, Hoogkamer took off to second base on the next pitch.
Heiligers swung, but in doing so, he interfered with the catcher.
That led to an inning-ending double play.
Heiligers struckout, while Hoogkamer was called out for batter's interference.
The small Pioniers-lead was shortlived, as UVV rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Due to two erros, six of the runs were unearned.
UVV got the bases loaded via Raoell Kortstam (walk), Timothy Rojas (hit by pitch) and Reangelo Willems (walk).
With one out, Kortstam scored the tying run on a single by Ryan Wheat and that was to be the lone earned run in this at bat.
With two outs, the runners advanced on a passed ball, which gave UVV a 3-2 lead.
Hereafter, pinch-hitter Lucas Bekker reached on an error, which could have been the third out.
Instead, Willems scored and UVV had runners at the corners.
J'mar Calliste and Stefan Kuipers followed with runscoring singles.
And that led to the first pitching change.
Alden Stacie took over the Pioniers-pitching, but he got the bases loaded when he hit Raoell Kortstam with a pitch.
Next, a run was scored when Timothy Rojas walked and another run was added when a force play-grounder by Reangelo Willems ended in an error.
Stacie closed by striking out Malcolm Marlin (who struckout twice in this inning), but UVV now led 8-1.
UVV added another run in the bottom of the third.
Ryan Wheat led off with a ground-rule double, then scored (again) on a following double by Quin Cotton.
With the latter on second base, Daan Kuit became the third pitcher for Pioniers.
He saw Cotton advance on a grounder, but he was left behind on third base.
Pioniers got two (unearned) runs back in the top of the fourth.
Lead-off hitter Duncan Beljaards was hit by a pitch, which was the third consecutive game in which he was hit.
With one out, Vincent Mevissen singled and with two outs, the runners advanced on a wild pitch.
Next batter Thom Hoogkamer struckout, but reached on a passed ball, which enabled Beljaards to score.
Mevissen went on to score on a single by Daniel Heiligers.
UVV immediately got both runs back and these runs also were unearned.
With two outs, debuting Daan Jansen was hit by a pitch in his first at bat, then reached second base safely when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Ryan Wheat.
Both scored on a triple by Quin Cotton, who missed the homerun to hit for-the-cycle.
In the sixth inning, it was Pioniers that scored another unearned run.
With one out, Miquel Willem singled.
Next batter Thom Hoogkamer also singled and when that was followed by an error, Pioniers got runners on second and third base.
Willem then scored on a grounder by Daniel Heiligers.
In the bottom of the sixth, UVV scored four runs to reach a 10-run difference.
Jesse van Es was the new pitcher for Pioniers and he got the bases loaded.
After having walked Timothy Rojas and Reangelo Willems, the rookie followed with a strikeout, but then also walked Ryan Wheat.
A pitching change followed and Sem Nijman took over with the bases loaded.
The lefthander was greeted with a 2-run double by Quin Cotton.
Next, Wheat scored his fifth run on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Bekker, which was followed by an error that also enabled Cotton to score.
With that, UVV now led 15-5 and was three outs away from a mercy-rule victory.
However, the 10-run diffference was erased in the top of the seventh when Pioniers scored three runs off of two relievers.
Sean Wout took over the UVV-pitching in the top of the seventh, but ran into some problems.
He gave up a lead-off infield-hit to Jack van Gorkum, then hit Bodhi de Vreede with a pitch.
After an infield-fly, Wout got the bases loaded when he walked Michael Dumitrescu, then gave up a run when he also walked Vincent Mevissen.
With three runners on base, Gijs van den Brink was inserted as new pitcher, but he threw a runscoring wild pitch, then saw another run being scored on a grounder by Miquel Willem.
And so, the run-difference now was seven runs and with that, the game had to continue.
UVV added one more run in the bottom of the eighth off of new pitcher Nick Loos.
He gave up a lead-off single to Ryan Wheat, who now had reached base six times in eight innings!
Wheat advanced to third base on a single by Quin Cotton, then scored his sixth (!) run on a grounder by Lucas Bekker to set a record.
In the top of the ninth, Gijs van den Brink got two baserunners with one out, but a double play then ended the game.
