HCAW wins twice to reach Final of Ringvaart Tournament
Nederlands

HEEMSTEDE (Neth.) - HCAW won its first two games of the seventh edition of the Ringvaart Tournament on Saturday (March 23) to secure a spot in the Final on Sunday.

Last year, when only three teams participated in what was to be the seventh edition, a lot of rain disturbed the tournament and the field in Heemstede, the home-site of organisor RCH-Pinguïns became unplayable for two days. Four of the six scheduled games were then moved to the site of HCAW in Bussum. One was played on Saturday, the other three on Sunday. RCH-Pinguïns does not consider these games as part of their tournament-format of last year and so, those games were labeled as exhibition-games.

But today, the tournament was back in Heemstede. With a new seventh edition.

Although some rain was predicted also for today. There indeed were two brief rain-showers, as well as a brief hail-shower. The sky cleared in the afternoon and it even was somewhat sunny. However, there a cold wind. Despite that and with an average temperature of 8 degrees Celsius (46 Fahrenheit), all four scheduled games could be played.

In the first game of the tournament, host RCH-Pinguïns met Dutch champion Amsterdam Pirates in a 6-inning game, which ended with a 2-2 score. In the next game (4½ inning), HCAW outscored DSS/Kinheim, 10-0. In the third game of the day (5 innings), HCAW won 3-1 against Pirates. The first day of the tournament ended with a 6-3 win for RCH-Pinguïns in a 3-inning game against DSS/Kinheim.

On Sunday, RCH-Pinguïns first plays against HCAW, then Amsterdam Pirates meets DSS/Kinheim. These games will be followed by the game for third and fourth place and the Final.

HCAW qualified for the Final today. When HCAW wins its final round-robin game against RCH-Pinguïns on Sunday-morning and Amsterdam Pirates defeats DSS/Kinheim, a tie for second place follows. RCH-Pinguïns and Pirates then share second place. However, as their head-to-head game ended in a 2-2 tie, the tournament-rules will determine the second finalist. The next tie-breaker is the overall run-ratio, which means that the final scores of Sunday's games will be decisive. After today's games, RCH-Pinguïns has scored eight runs and given up five. Pirates scored three runs and gave up five, which means that the run-ratio currently is in favor of RCH-Pinguïns.

RCH-Pinguïns vs. Amsterdam Pirates

In the opening-game of the tournament, host RCH-Pinguïns failed to hold onto a 2-0 lead against Amsterdam Pirates. The reigning champion came alongside, but was unable to turn the game around. And so, the 6-inning game ended with a 2-2 score.

Orlando Yntema made his pitching-debut for RCH-Pinguïns. The veteran righthander joined the club in January. After having pitched for UVV in 2011 and 2012, Yntema played in the next eleven seasons for Curaçao Neptunus. Due to an injury, the former Netherlands Team-pitcher played in only two games last year and missed the entire 2022 season. Initially, after completion of last season, it was reported that Yntema was to retire. Not long thereafter, it was reported that Yntema would be back this season and also was to pitch again for Neptunus. However, in January, RCH-Pinguïns announced that Yntema had joined the club as its Pitching Coach and also will be one of the pitchers this season.

Today, Yntema made a good first impression in an uniform of RCH-Pinguïns. He threw two hitless and scoreless innings and struckout three batters. Yntema got two baserunners in the first inning. With one out, Roelie Henrique reached on an error, but then was forced out on a grounder by Oliver van der Wijst Severino, who would be left behind on first base. In the second inning, Yntema struckout the side. In the top of the third inning, T'sean Martina took over the pitching and completed the game.

Nelmerson Angela started for Pirates. RCH-Pinguïns left a runner behind on first base in the first inning and on second base in the second at bat. The Heemstede-team then opened the score with two runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Raul Jacobs singled and Tijani Dunlop was hit by a pitch. After the two had advanced on a wild pitch, Jeldwin Orman delivered a runscoring single. When a throwing error followed the single, it enabled RCH-Pinguïns to score another run.

After Pirates had been retired in order in the top of the fourth, rookie Jensely Keyzer took over from Angela in the bottom of the fourth. He saw the home-team leave a runner behind on second base. Keyzer is one of the players of the second team of Pirates, who are added to the roster for the exhibition-season.

In the top of the fifth, Pirates came alongside. T'sean Martina hit lead-off hitter (and Pirates-newcomer) Urving Kemp (ex DSS/Kinheim) with a pitch. With one out, Martina gave up a single to Jason Jakobus, then got the bases loaded when Tommy van de Sanden also singled. With two outs, Oliver van der Wijst Severino connected for a 2-run single. A grounder ended the at bat.

In the sixth (and final) inning, Alex Madera led off for Pirates with a double and stole third base. An intentional walk was then issued to Yurdion Martie. But with runners at the corners, a pop-fly and a double play followed.

RCH-Pinguïns also got an opportunity to add another run in its fifth and sixth at bat off of new pitcher Yassir Lachkar. In the fifth, runners stranded on first and second base. With two outs in the sixth, Aldrich Guzman doubled and advanced on a passed ball. Newcomer Edvin Yrausquin (ex-Quick Amersfoort) then walked and stole second base. But they were left behind on second and third base, as Lachkar closed with a strikeout.

HCAW vs. DSS/Kinhem

HCAW had a productive outing against DSS/Kinheim and also got solid pitching. The team collected eight basehits and recorded a 10-0 shutout-win in a 4½ inning game. Pitchers Sedley Karel and Nathan Diaby both struckout five batters and combined, they gave up only two basehits.

However, it was DSS/Kinheim that threatened to open the score in the top of the first inning, as the Haarlem-team got the bases loaded with no outs off of Karel. The veteran righthander walked the first two batters he faced, Amarensio Franka and Julian Toppen, then gave up a single to newcomer Ibrahin Redan. But with the bases loaded, Karel struckout the next two batters and made the final out himself on a comeback-grounder.

Moments later, HCAW scored the first run in its first at bat. Julian Goins led off with a double, moved to third base on a passed ball with two outs and scored on a single by Koen Werkman.

After DSS/Kinheim was retired in order in the top of the second, HCAW rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second. After lead-off hitter Denzel Brooks had reached on an error, HCAW got the bases loaded when Jair van Borkulo and Delano Selassa both walked. With one out, Bob van der Meer delivered a 2-run double. Julians Goins followed with a runscoring single and the fourth run was added via a sacrifice fly by Daan Verpaalen.

In the top of the third, DSS/Kinheim left runners behind on first and third base. With Amarensio Franka (walk) on first base, Julian Toppen drove the ball into centerfield, but there, Koen Werkman made a nice catch. Franka advanced to third base when Ibrahin Redan connected for his second single. The veteran player is one of the many players who left Quick Amersfoort after last season. Today, Redan accounted for both hits of his new team. But with runners at the corners, a strikeout and groundout followed.

HCAW added two runs in its third at bat, which were both unearned. Five of HCAW's ten runs were unearned. Lead-off hitter Koen Werkman reached on an error and moved to third base on a wild pitch. With one out, he scored on a grounder by Denzel Brooks. With two outs, Jair van Borkulo walked and advanced to third on a single by Delano Selassa. Van Borkulo then scored in a double steal-situation. With Selassa on third base, Rick Rizvić closed with a strikeout, but HCAW now led 7-0.

In the fourth inning, Nathan Diaby took over the HCAW-pitching. He retired all six batters he faced, five of them with a strikeout (three in the fourth).

HCAW scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth off of new pitcher Finn Blokker. He walked lead-off hitter Bob van der Meer, who scored on a following double by Julian Goins. After next hitter Daan Verpaalen had singled, Goins scored when Kevin Wiegers also singled. Verpaalen then moved to third base on a flyout and scored when Wiegers was forced out on a grounder by Brendly Martina, which lifted the lead to 10-0.

A flyout accounted for the first out in the top of the fifth. Nathan Diaby then struckout the next two batters to end the game.

Amsterdam Pirates vs. HCAW

In the third game today, HCAW broke an 1-1 tie against Amsterdam Pirates in the fourth inning and won 3-1 to record its second win of the day.

HCAW opened the score in the top of the first inning off of starter Kimi Verkruijssen, who is one of the rookie-pitchers currently on the roster for the exhibition-season. Two other rookies also threw for Pirates in this game.

Jair van Borkulo led off the game for HCAW with a double, moved on a grounder by Delano Selassa, then scored on a single by Shurman Marlin. Next batter Bob van der Meer also singled, but hereafter, a strikeout and pop-fly followed.

In the next two innings, Verkruijssen kept HCAW scoreless. In the second,Koen Werkman reached on an error with one out, but two flyouts followed. With one out in the third, Delano Selassa singled. This time, a double play followed on a grounder by Shurman Marlin.

Pirates also reached base in each of its first three at bats off of Lars Huijer. Jason Jakobus led off with a single in the first inning, but he was caught stealing. In the second, it was Roelie Henrique who led off with a single, but he was eliminated in an inning-ending double play on a grounder by Oliver van der Wijst Severino. But Pirates then scored in the third inning, while trailing 1-0. With one out, Alex Madera homered to make it an 1-1 score. Hereafter, Urving Kemp singled. Another inning-ending double play followed, this time on a grounder by rookie (and second team-player) Mihai Bracacescu.

HCAW re-took the lead with two outs in the top of the fourth inning by scoring twice off of rookie Wesley Jansen, who is the son of former longtime big league- and Netherlands Team-pitcher Eelco Jansen, who is a pitching instructor of Pirates. With one out, Jansen walked Julian Goins and with two outs, the lefthander gave up a single to rookie Kevin Wiegers. Hereafter, Koen Werkman followed with an RBI-single. Next, HCAW got the bases loaded when Brendly Martina walked. Another run was then scored when Denzel Brooks also walked. Three runners were left behind when Jair van Borkulo grounded out, but HCAW now led 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Pirates left a runner behind on second base off of new pitcher Nick Keur. With one out, he gave up a single to Tommy van de Sanden, who was awarded second base on a balk-call. Van de Sanden was unable to advance on a grounder by Denzel Richardson, then a strikeout ended the at bat.

In the fifth inning, rookie Casper Urbanus pitched for Pirates. He walked Shurman Marlin with one out, but Bob van der Meer then grounded into a double play. By the way, Urbanus is not related to former Pirates-player Nick Urbanus and former coach Charles Urbanus.

Trailing 3-1, Pirates got a chance to turn the game its way when it got the bases loaded. With one out, Oliver van der Wijst Severino singled. Nick Keur then got the bases loaded when he walked (former HCAW-player) Quintin de Cuba and Alex Madera. But with three runners on base, Keur struckout the next two batters to end the inning and the game.

DSS/Kinheim vs. RCH-Pinguïns

In the final game today, RCH-Pinguïns broke a 2-2 tie in the second inning by scoring four unearned runs and went on to win 6-3 against DSS/Kinheim, which therefore was eliminated for the Final and will finish in fourth place after the round-robin.

RCH-Pinguïns opened the score with two runs with two outs in the top of the first inning off of DSS/Kinheim-starter Donny Breek. With one out, the righthander got the bases loaded when he walked Tijani Dunlup and Jeldwin Orman and hit Tilsaimy Melfor with a pitch. Next, a pop-fly by Ruendrick Piternella ended in an infield-fly and thus accounted for the second out. However, Dunlop and Orman then scored on two consecutive wild pitches. When next batter Aldrich Guzman also walked, Mathijs Oosterbeek took over the pitching. He got an inning-ending pop-fly.

DSS/Kinheim immediately came alongside in the bottom of the first inning when RCH-Pinguïns starter Joel Martis also ran into problems with two outs. With one out, Julian Toppen singled and Ibrahin Redan walked. With two outs, Toppen scored on a single by Marcel Tolenaars, then Redan scored on a wild pitch. Hereafter, DSS/Kinheim got the bases loaded when Amarensio Franka and Jesse van den Berg both walked. A flyout ended the at bat, three runners were left behind, but the score was tied at 2-2.

RCH-Pinguïns answered with four runs with two outs in the top of the second. All runs were unearned, as the DSS/Kinheim-defense committed four errors. With one out, newcomer Malcom Marlin (ex-UVV) walked and moved into scoring position on a grounder by Paris Aguilera Zayas and advanced to third base on a 2-out single by Raul Jacobs. When the latter stole second base, a throwing error followed and that enabled Marlin to score. Hereafter, three errors followed. First, a fielding error on a grounder by Tijani Dunlup led to runners at the corners. Next, Jacobs scored when a throwing error was made on a grounder by Jeldwin Orman, which also gave RCH-Pinguïns runners on second and third base. And they went on to score when a pop-fly by Tilsaimy Melfor was dropped. A single by Ruendrick Piternella followed. Mathijs Oosterbeek then closed with a strikeout, but RCH-Pinguïns had taken a decisive 6-2 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, DSS/Kinheim got two baserunners off of new pitcher Pascal Moll. The rookie then gave up a single to Julian Toppen and walked Ibrahin Redan, but closed with a strikeout.

RCH-Pinguïns came close to another run in the top of the third. With one out, newcomer Dion Frank (ex-HCAW) walked and Malcolm Marlin singled, but they stranded on second and third base.

DSS/Kinheim scored one more run in the bottom of the third (and final) inning of the slowpaced game. With one out, Moreno Vork was inserted as new pitcher for RCH-Pinguïns. He was greeted with a double by Amarensio Franka, who advanced to third base on a wild pitch, then scored when Jesse van den Berg followed with a single. After the latter had moved to third base on a grounder and wild pitch, Bodie Eskes walked. The inning and the game then ended when Eskes was caught stealing.
