Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW recorded a 3-2, come-from-behind, walk-off victory against Curaçao Neptunus on Sunday-afternoon (April 6) to win the 43rd edition of the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus Sr. Tournament.

Earlier in the day, the game between Amsterdam Pirates and Kinheim ended in a 2-2 tie. Pirates, which won the tournament last year, held Kinheim hitless to finish in third place. Chris Stuart and Finn Kragt threw a combined No-Hitter.

The tournament ended with the game between HCAW and Neptunus. Beforehand, it was clear that the winner of the game would become the tournament-winner. In case the game ended in a tie, Neptunus would be the winner. HCAW trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, which would be the final inning, as the tourrnament-rule time-limit had been reached. With one out, Jesse Aussems delivered a walk-off, 2-run double.

According to the tournament-rules, a maximum of seven innings will be played in a game. No new inning will began after one hour and 50 minutes.

Amsterdam Pirates vs. Kinheim

In today's first game, Chris Stuart and Finn Kragt had a solid outing on the mound for Amsterdam Pirates. They threw a combined No-Hitter and stuckout ten batters in the 6-inning game. Nevertheless, Pirates faced an early 2-0 deficit. That was erased in the third inning and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

In the top of the first inning, Kinheim got five baserunners and scored twice. Pirates-starter Chris Stuart walked lead-off hitter Sander van der Meer, then hit next batter Amarensio Franka with a pitch. Stuart, who last season played for HCAW, followed with a strikeout, but then got the bases loaded when he walked Jayden Mohamed. Hereafter, the lefthander also walked Guus Toemen and hit newcomer Rick Peels (ex-Quick Amersfoort) with a pitch, resulting in two automatic runs. Stuart recovered, struckout the next two batters with the bases loaded, but Kinheim had taken an early lead, without recording a basehit.

In the remainder of the game, Kinheim got only two more runners into scoring-position. In the second inning, Stuart struckout the first two batters, then hit Amarensio Franka with a pitch for the second time. He stole second base, but he also stranded there.

Hereafter, nine consecutive Kinheim-batters were retired in order. Four by Stuart, five by Finn Kragt, who took over the pitching in the fourth inning.

In the top of the sixth, Kinheim got its final runner in scoring-position. Lead-off hitter Guus Toemen walked and stole second base, but Kragt retired the next three batters.

Pirates faced Dylan Eshuis, who got one baserunner in the first two innings. But in the bottom of the third, Pirates came alongside. With one out, Jason Jakobus was hit by a pitch and scored on a following double by Nick Hofer, who transfered from Kinheim to Pirates after last season. Moments later, Hofer scored the tying run on a single by Roelie Henrique. Pirates got runners at the corners when Quintin de Cuba also singled. However, next batter Luca Pastor was called out for batter's interference and Jamie Beerman grounded out. Beerman also played for Kinheim last year, but he returned to Pirates, where he had made his big league-debut in 2023.

In the next three at bats, Pirates was unable to turn the game its way. The team got only one more runner. With one out in the sixth, Luca Pastor walked, but he was eliminated when Jamie Beerman lined into a game-ending double play.

Neptunus opened the score in the top of the first inning off of Kaj Timmermans. With one out, the righthander gave up singles to Drew Janssen and Christian Diaz. With two outs, Janssen scored on a single by Sheadion Jamanika. With runners on first and third base, Timmermans closed with a strikeout.

HCAW immediately alongside in its first at bat off of Drew Janssen. With two outs, the Belgian righthander walked Delano Selassa. He stole second base, then scored on a double by Arthur Bonevacia, who last year played for Neptunus. Janssen closed his lone inning on the mound with a strikeout.

By the way, Neptunus used the so-called Ohtani-rule in this game. Besides being a pitcher, Janssen also also can be inserted in other positions, which makes him a 2-way player. In this game, Janssen batted second, but also was the starting pitcher. In other words, he batted for himself, as the announced starting designated hitter. When Koen Postelmans took over the pitching in the second, Janssen stayed in the batting order, hitting as the DH for his relievers. The rule is named after Japanese powerhitting pitcher Shohei Ohtani, who plays in the Major League for Los Angeles Dodgers and before that, Los Angeles Angels.

With two outs in the top of the second inning, Bob van der Meer and Darryl Collins singled for Neptunus, but the latter was forced out on a following grounder.

Neptunus re-took the lead in the fourth in an at bat that began with three newcomers. Sem Kuijper (ex-DSS/Kinheim) led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Yurdion Martie (ex-Amsterdam Pirates) and a single by Bob van der Meer (ex-HCAW). Kuijper scored on a sacrifice fly by Darryl Collins.

Koen Postelmans threw four hitless innings for Neptunus. In the second inning, he walked Victor Draijer and hit Jesse Aussems with a pitch. The two were awarded second and third base on a balk-call, but then were left behind.

In the fourth, Postelmans walked two more batters, but this time, HCAW left runners behind on first and second base.

In the top of the sixth, Neptunus came close to another run. With one out, Sem Kuijper singled off of Nathan Diaby, who had taken over the HCAW-pitching in the previous inning. With Kuijper on first base, lefthander Rick Rizvić took over. He walked Yurdion Martie and Bob van der Meer, which loaded the bases. A flyout and force out followed and so, Neptunus left three runners behind.

With a 2-1 lead, rookie Chris Groenemans took over the pitching for Neptunus in the bottom of the sixth. He was greeted with a lead-off single by Arthur Bonevacia, followed by a single by Jair van Borkulo. Bonevacia was then forced out at third base on a bunt by Victor Draijer, which was fielded by Groenemans. Moments later, Van Borkulo and Draijer advanced to second and third base on a wild pitch, then scored when former Neptunian Jesse Aussems delivered a 2-run, walk-off double.

With that, HCAW won the game and the tournament. And that also was the first success of the Bussum-team under Gino Henson, who was named new Head Coach on March 20.
