Game 8 - July 3 - Great Britain vs. Netherlands
Today's game at Bob Van Impe Stadium was a pitching duel between Jeffry Visser (Netherlands) and Kyle Linton (Great Britain).
While Linton had better stats, Visser held the British squad scoreless and was supported with two runs.
The British squad today played without its top batter Rich Haldane (who also is the team's number 2 pitcher), as he was suspended for his part in a bench-clearing brawl the day before against Argentina.
The Dutch Team opened the score in the top of the third inning.
Anthony Beaumont led off with a single, then Glennsig Polonius followed with a double.
With one out, pinch-runner Jerome Wouters (running for Beaumont) scored on a sacrifice fly by Randy Lo-A-Tjong, but Polonius stranded, as a strikeout ended the inning.
The Orange doubled its lead in the sixth inning.
With two outs, Eldrick Dijkhoff singled and stole second base, then scored on a single by Enrique Javier.
In the bottom of the second inning, Darrin Newson led off for the British squad with a walk, but he was eliminated when next batter Nopera Stockford lined into a double play.
In the next three innings, Jeffry Visser was clearly in control.
And so, the Dutch Team appeared to be in a good position, leading 2-0 and needing only six outs to win its first game.
But in the bottom of the sixth, the situation changed, as the British suddenly scored three runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, with one out, Ryan Martin, Kevin Stockford and Kenny Pregnell all singled to bring in one run.
It would have put runners on the corners, but while the throw from rightfield went to third base, Pregnell went too far and was eliminated on the throw back to first base.
And so, with two outs and a runner on third base, the Dutch were still leading 2-1.
Moments after becoming the second out, Pregnell became the courtesy runner on third base for (catcher) Stockford and scored the tying run on a passed ball.
Hereafter, James Darby walked and scored all the way from first base when Darrin Newson followed with a double to give the British a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, Kyle Linton retired the side to complete the come-from-behind-victory.
