Pioniers repeats as Dutch Men Softball Champion!
Nederlands
DIEMEN (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers again has captured the Dutch Championship-title in Men Softball. On Saturday (October 17), the team swept BioSilk Quick Amersfoort in the best-of-three Holland Series at the site of TIW-Survivors in Diemen.

In the opener, Pioniers won 13-9 and saw Randy Reiph hit for-the-cycle.

In the second game, Pioniers came from behind to capture the championship-title. Initially, Quick led 8-0 in the second inning and appeared to force a third game. However, the Amersfoort-squad failed to hold onto the comfortable and big lead. Still leading 8-2 in the fifth at bat, Pioniers then turned the game around in its favor with 7-run rally and won 10-8 to repeat as Dutch champion.

(October 17)

Game One

In the first game, Pioniers had a productive beginning and led 7-0 after the top of the second inning. In the first at bat, the first four batters reached base safely off of starter Niek Nieuwenhuizen. Danish national team-player Valdemar Terkelsen led off with a double, then an error followed on a sacrifice bunt by Glennsig Polonius. A double by Randy Reiph then led to the first run. Moments later, Polonius and Reiph both scored on a single by Enio Kwas to give Pioniers a quick 3-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning,Jesus Flores led off with a homerun. Jefferson Delfina followed with a single and advanced on an error. With one out, he scored the next Pioniers-run on a single by Glennsig Polonius, which led to a pitching change. Czech hurler Andrej Nemec took over for Nieuwenhuizen, but saw the next run being scored when a fly by Randy Reiph was missed in the outfield. Reiph ended up on third base, then scored moments later on a double by Enio Kwas to make it 7-0.

Valdemar Terkelsen started for Pioniers and began with three strikeouts in the first inning. But he ran in some problems in the next two at bat, giving up six runs, with only one being earned. In the second Quick at bat, three runs were scored. Jerome Wouters led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs, an error followed on a grounder by Davy van Venrooy, which led to the first run. Hereafter, Merlijn Brink walked and Wesley Bernardus singled. When a throwing error followed on this single, both Van Venrooy and Brink were able to score and narrow the deficit to 7-3.

Pioniers got the three runs back immediately in the top of the third inning. Lead-off batter Idelgardo Raap struckout, but reached on a wild pitch, then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Jesus Flores. Next batter Jefferson Delfina walked, then second baseman Wesley Bernadus made a great catch on a line drive by Valdemar Terkelsen. But herafter, Glennsig Polonius hit a runscoring single, then Randy Reiph added a 2-run triple to make it a 10-3 score.

In the bottom of the third inning, Quick Amersfoort again scored three runs. Manuel Bouwman and Anthony Hosé walked, then Jerome Wouters followed with a runscoring single. Later in the at bat, both Hosé and Wouters would score on a passed ball to make it a 10-6 score.

In the fourth, Quick narrowed the deficit to 10-7. Erik van der Horst was on base with one out when Manuel Bouwman and Anthony Hosé walked. Hereafter, veteran Arjan Baanen took over for the Danish hurler. He got two grounders to end the inning. But the first grounder by Jerome Wouters led to a run.

In the fifth inning, Pioniers took more distance. With two outs, Glennsig Polonius walked, then Randy Reiph followed with a 2-run homerun that lifted the lead to 12-7.

In the highscoring game, Quick scored two more runs in its sixth at bat. Wesley Bernardus led off with a single, then scored on a passed ball. Hereafter, Erik van der Horst walked and Manuel Bouwman singled. With one out, then bases got loaded when Jerome Wouters reached on an error. A run was scored on a grounder by Serge Artsen, but Quick stranded two runners.

In the top of the seventh inning, Pioniers had one more run left to make it a 13-9 score. With one out, Valdemar Terkelsen reached on an error and stole second base. With two outs, he scored on a single by Randy Reiph, who with that completed a 'cycle' and got six runs batted in.

Arjan Baanen retired the side in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the win.

Game Two

The second game appeared to go the way of Quick Amersfoort, as the team led 8-0 (!) after completion of the top of the second inning. Five innings later, Quick was left empty-handed, losing 10-8!

In the fifth inning, Pioniers turned the game its way with a 7-run rally. An important contribution to the win in this game was done by Valdemar Terkelsen. He delivered a 2-run double that narrowed the deficit to 8-7, but also led to the tying run, then scored the go-ahead run himself. Besides that, he took over the pitching in the second, gave up only one basehit in the remainder of the game and struckout 14 batters. With that, he raised his strikeout-total to 22 in both games. After completion of the game, the Danish player was named Most Valuable Player of the Final.

But let's start with the beginning, as Quick Amersfoort initially held a very comfortable lead, scoring four runs in both the first and second inning off of starting pitcher Arjan Baanen. By the way, only one of these eight runs was earned!

In the top of the first inning, Quick was the visiting team in this game, Manuel Bouwman doubled with one out. He then scored the first run when Anthony Hosé followed with a single. A force play-grounder by Jerome Wouters then ended in an error to put runners on second and third base. A following single by Serge Artsen brought in both runners and lifted the lead to 3-0. With two outs, Ricardo Bryson doubled, then the bases got loaded when Merlijn Brink walked. Artsen then scored when Ron Dix was hit by a pitch, but then Quick left three runners behind. And that would not be the first time in this game.

In the second at bat, Quick doubled its lead by scoring four unearned runs. With two outs, Jerome Wouters and Serge Artsen singled. Next batter Revin Brooks struckout, but reached on a passed ball, which would have been the third out in the inning. Hereafter, Ricardo Bryson followed with a 2-run single. Baanen was then replaced by Valdemar Terkelsen. With runners on first and third base, he set up a force play by walking Merlijn Brink intentionally. But hereafter, Ron Dix delivered a runscoring single and Erik van der Horst walked to bring in the next run and increase the lead to 8-0. Hereafter, Quick again left three runners behind. The basehit by Dix was the lone one Terkelsen would give up. In the remainder of the game, he walked nine batters, but also struckout 14 batters and held Quick scoreless!

Thanks to the nine walks and two force play-grounders, Quick would reach base frequently in the remainder of the game. In total, Quick stranded 14 runners!

After leaving two runners in the first inning and trailing 8-0 in the second, Pioniers scored its first two runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Idelgardo Raap homered, then Jesus Flores singled and advanced on a wild pitch. And error then followed on a grounder by Jefferson Delfina, who later stole second base. Flores scored then next run on a sacrifice fly by Valdemar Terkelsen.

In the third inning, two more Pioniers-runners stranded and in the fourth, one runner was left behind.

And so, the bottom of the fifth inning began with Pioniers still trailing 8-2! But then, Pioniers rallied for seven runs off of three pitchers, who all failed to find the strike-zone. First, Randy Reiph led off with his second homerun of the day. With one out, Randy Lo-A-Tjong and Griffith Cathalina walked. That led to a pitching change, as starter Andrej Nemc was relieved by Niek Nieuwenhuizen. He began with a walk for Idelgardo Raap that loaded the bases. Nieuwenhuizen then hit Jesus Flores with a pitch and walked Jefferson Delfina, which led to two runs, that narrowed Pioniers' deficit to 8-5 and kept the bases loaded. It also brought in a new pitcher, as veteran Henk van Zijtveld took over. He faced Valdemar Terkelsen, who drilled the ball into rightfield for a double. That brought in Raap and Flores, but when an error followed, Delfina also crossed home plate to tie the score! Terkelsen had advanced to third base on the throw, then scored the go-ahead run when Glennsig Polonius followed with a sacrifice fly on foul territory. The game had completely turned around and Pioniers now led 9-8!

In the bottom of the sixth, Pioniers added another run. Randy Lo-A-Tjong led of with a double, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Griffith Cathalina and scored on a sacrifice fly by Idelgardo Raap.

Now suddenly trailing 10-8, Quick Amersfoort got a final scoring opportunity to do something back in the top of the seventh inning. Anthony Hosé led off with a walk, then Valdemar Terkelsen followed with a strikeout. Hereafter, Hosé was forced out on a grounder by Serge Artsen. Quick got runners on first and second base when Wesley Bernardus walked. But hereafter, Terkelsen sealed the victory with his 22nd strikeout of the day to complete a remarkable come-from-behind victory!
