Dutch Team shutout by Australia
Nederlands
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (Canada) - On the second day of the 14th ISF Men's World Championship in Canada, the Netherlands Men Softball Team was shutout 8-0 by Australia.

At the Gordie Howe Park, the Dutch Team collected three basehits against Australia, which won the bronze medal two years ago when the event was held in New Zealand.

Game 2 - June 27 - Netherlands vs. Australia

In the first inning, veteran pitcher Arjan Baanen encountered no problems, but the righthander then gave up three runs in the second at bat. Shaun Goffer led off with a double and moved on a sac-bunt, then scored when Mark Harris homered. Hereafter, Australia got the bases loaded, but the runner on second base was picked off by the catcher. A single by Peter Wards then accounted for the next run. A walk re-loaded the base, but Baanen then ended the at bat with a strikeout.

In the third inning, Australia added three more runs. With one out, an error and single gave the Aussies two baserunners on first and third base. Next, James Brownlow connected well for a 3-run homerun to lift the lead to 6-0.

Australia was unable to reach the mercy-rule 7-run difference, as it was held scoreless in the next three innings.

In the fourth inning, Niek Nieuwenhuizen took over the Dutch pitching and was supported with a double play.

In the fifth, Jeffry Visser became the third Orange-pitcher. He gave up a lead-off single, followed with a strikeout, then the Dutch defense turned another double play. In the sixth, Visser allowed only one batter to reach base.

In the seventh, Australia did add two more runs. James Todhunter led off with a walk, then Julian Jemmott homered to make it 8-0.

Like the day before, the Orange squad collected only three basehits off of Harrison Peters, who went the distance for Australia. Randy Lo-A-Tjong singled with two outs in the second inning, but stranded on first base. In the third at bat, Jeff Delfina singled with one out and stole second base, then was left behind. The third Dutch basehit was registered in the fourth inning when Eldrick Dijkhoff singled with one out, but he also didn't get beyond first base.

The Dutch team got another runner in the fifth when Merlijn Brink led off with a walk, but he was caught stealing with two outs. Peters then retired the side in the sixth and seventh inning to end the game.
