Game 3 - June 28 - Netherlands vs. Denmark
In its third game, the Netherlands Men Softball Team lost only 2-0 to Denmark.
The Danish squad scored the runs, both unearned, in the second inning.
At the Bob Van Impe Stadium, Denmark got its first two runners on base in the first at bat off of starter Jeroen Mulder.
With two outs, Frederik Terkelson walked and Daniel Julenon singled, but the latter was forced out to end the inning.
Denmark then scored what would be the decisive runs in the second at bat.
Designated Player Anders Jorgensen led off with a walk.
Kim Hansen, the Danish pitcher, who was listed in the tenth position on the batting order, then was inserted as pinch-runner for Jorgensen.
He stole second base, then scored when an error followed.
Next, Mads Simonsen walked, but two quick outs followed.
However, Simonsen then advanced to the next three bases on three consecutive passed balls to give Denmark a 2-0 lead.
In the remainder of the game, the Dutch defense did fine.
Mulder retired the side in the third inning.
He then gave up a lead-off triple to Jesper Sillemann in the fourth, but followed with two strikeouts and a grounder.
In the fifth inning, Denmark threatened to score again, but left three runners behind.
With one out, Niek Nieuwenhuizen took over the pitching and walked Valdermar Terkelson.
A flyout followed, then Frederik Terkelson singled, resulting in runners at the corners.
The latter then stole second base and a force play was created by giving Daniel Julenon an intentional walk.
Hereafter, Jeffry Visser took over the pitching and ended the inning with a groundout.
Denmark left a runner in the sixth, then was retired in order in the seventh.
So, the Dutch played very well in this game, but it was unable to do something off of the strong pitching of Kim Hansen.
The veteran pitcher struckout 14 batters and gave up only one basehit.
After retiring the side in the first inning, he gave up a lead-off single to Eldrick Dijkhoff in the second, but followed with three strikeouts.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, trailing 2-0, the Orange got two baserunners.
Lead-off hitter Randy Reiph reached second base on an error and advanced to third on a grounder by Enrique Javier.
Next, Eldrick Dijkhoff walked and stole second base.
But the two were then left behind in scoring position when a strikeout and groundout followed.
Hereafter, the Dutch didn't reach base again, as Hansen retired the final 11 batters he faced in order.
