Game 4 - June 29 - USA vs. Netherlands
In its fourth game, the Dutch Team played another fine game, this time against the USA.
But in the end, the Orange were left empty handed again, as the offense was unable to produce off of dominating pitcher Josh Johnson.
He struckout 13 batters and gave up only two basehits.
Dutch starter Jeffry Visser held the Americans scoreless in the first three innings.
He retired the side in the first inning and was supported by a double play in the second.
In the third at bat, Visser gave up an one-out single to Rylan Sandoval, who moved on a sac-bunt, but then stranded.
Team USA opened the score in the fourth inning when Matt Palazzo homered with one out.
Visser retired the side again in the fifth and so, the USA was leading only 1-0 when the sixth inning began.
The Dutch Team was retired in order in the first three innings, then got a chance of opening the score in the fourth at bat.
Lead-off hitter Jeff Delfina was hit by a pitch, stole second base, then moved to third on a sac-bunt by Randy Lo-A-Tjong.
A pop-fly followed, then Eldrick Dijkhoff was walked intentionally.
The latter then also stole second base and so, the Dutch Team had runners on second and third base.
Unfortunately, they stranded when a strikeout ended the at bat.
Moments later, the USA took a 1-0 lead via the above mentioned homerun.
After being retired in order again in the fifth, the Dutch Team got another baserunner in the sixth inning.
With two outs, Randy-Lo-A-Tjong singled, but his pinch-runner Jerome Wouters was then caught stealing.
In the bottom of the sixth, Team USA struck with three runs to decide the game.
Jeffrey Visser walked lead-off hitter Kris Bogach, then was relieved by Jeroen Mulder.
Chris Miljavac took over as pinch-runner for Bogach, who moved on a sac-bunt.
An intentional walk for Palazzo followed, but then Derrick Zechman and Chase Turner connected for runscoring singles.
Hereafter, pinch-hitter Frank De Groat also delivered an RBI-single to make it 4-0.
The Americans left the bases loaded, but had taken a decisive lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, Randy Reiph led off with a double and Eldrick Dijkhoff walked.
The two moved on a grounder, then Reiph scored the lone Dutch run on a grounder by Angelo Arnold, but that was it for the Dutch squad today.
