ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - DOOR Neptunus on Sunday won 2-1 vs. Sparta/Feyenoord on Day 2 of the Hudson John Tournament to remain unbeaten and win the tenth edition of the annual event. After this game, L&D Amsterdam met MediaMonks RCH, then the Amsterdam-squad also faced Sparta/Feyenoord in their re-scheduled game, which rained out on Saturday.
Neptunus left runners behind in the first and second inning.
In the first, Sparta/Feyenoord turned a double play to support starter Herman Gaarman, then in the second, with runners on first and second base and one out, Neptunus-runner Andy Leer was caught stealing.
Facing new pitcher and former Neptununian Elton Koeiman, the score was opened in the third at bat, but three runners stranded.
After Koeiman struckout the first two batters, he ran into problems.
Benjamin Dille singled and advanced on a wild pitch, then Raily Legito walked.
Lennart Koster followed with an RBI-double and the bases were loaded when Koeiman hit Rien Vernooij with a pitch.
The inning then ended when Andy Leer flied out.
In the fourth and fifth inning, Neptunus left three more runners, then Sparta/Feyenoord came alongside in the home of the fifth.
Neptunus-starter Jurjen van Zijl gave up an one-out single to Gino Henson in the first inning, but then retired eleven of the next twelve batters.
He retired six in a row, before giving up an one-out single to Shaldimar Daantji in the third, but then retired the next five again.
In the fifth inning, Gregory Gustina took over the pitching and got two quick outs, but then gave up an infield-hit to Sape Wagenaar, one of twelve former Neptunians on the Sparta/Feyenoord-roster.
Wagenaar advanced to third on a single by Shaldimar Daantji, then scored when Ramphis Trinidad also singled.
With runners on first and third (Daantji stole third), the inning ended with a flyout.
Neptunus got the run and the lead back in the sixth inning when Jeroen Sluijter led off with a homerun.
In the seventh, Sparta/Feyenoord turned its second double of the game, but offensively stranded three runners in the last three innings off closer Berry van Driel.
In the home of the sixth, Rodney Michel walked with two outs, but a force play-grounder followed.
In the seventh, pinch-hitter Shurendell Borgschot walked, but was left behind and in the eighth, two batters reached base.
First, Gino Henson struckout, but reached base on a wild pitch. He advanced on a sac-bunt, but was thrown out at third on a grounder by Percy Isenia.
His pinch-runner Edison Bito then advanced to third on another wild pitch, but stranded there, as Rodney Michel flied out to end the game.
