UVV completes sweep vs. Pirates to stay in big league
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - UVV won Game 3 of the best-of-five Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs vs. Amsterdam Pirates 7-5 to complete a sweep and secure its stay in the Dutch big league for next season.

UVV collected 15 basehits and led 5-1 in the third inning, but then Amsterdam started to come back off of Canadian pitcher Lacey Dinney. Leading 7-3 in the fourth, the scoring for UVV stopped, while Pirates got closer, but in the end, they ended up empty-handed.

UVV set the tone for the game when Laura Arp led off in the first inning with a homerun off of Australian starter Monique Faul. Next batter Mirjam Boode then walked and Stephanie Reid reached on a bunt-single, but Faul then struckout Sanne Bolhuis. The bases got loaded when Edith Riemsdijk also walked. UVV then stranded three runners when Cintia de Groodt fouled out and Natalie van der Wijst struckout.

In the second inning, UVV scored three runs on six basehits to increase the lead to 4-0. With one out, Kirsten Vierdag, Laura Arp (who was 3-for-4) and Mirjam Boode all singled to bring in the first run. Stephanie Reid folllowed with another RBI-single, but while Arp scored, Boode was eliminated at third base trying to advance. Sanne Bolhuis then also singled to bring Reid to third base, but she could score when a throwing error followed. Edith Riemsdijk followed with the sixth consecutive basehit, but a flyout then ended the inning.

Pirates got one run back in the home of the second inning. UVV's Canadian starter Lacey Dinney gave up a lead-off single to Naomi Andringa, who then advanced on a wild pitch. She moved to third base on a grounder by Kelly Koeman, then scored on another wild pitch.

In the top of the third, UVV added another run. With one out, Misja Koops doubled, which led to a pitching change. Anne-Bé Bartels took over, but began with a wild pitch. Moments later, Koops scored on a sac-fly by Kirsten Vierdag.

Trailing 5-1, Pirates started to come back by scoring twice in the home of the third inning on four consecutive basehits. With one out, Lizzie Clarijs singled, then Ella Krommendijk doubled (she had also doubled in the first inning). Hereafter, Annemiek de Rover and Denice van Dijk both delivered RBI-singles that made it 5-3.

UVV took some more distance in the fourth inning when Mirjam Boode led off with a double and Stephanie Reid followed with a homerun to make it 7-3.

But the win wasn't secured yet, as Pirates answered with two runs in the fifth inning after turning a double play in the top half of the at bat. With one out, Ella Krommendijk (who was 3-for-4) reached on a bunt-single, then advanced on a sac-bunt by Annemiek de Rover. An error on a grounder by Denice van Dijk resulted in runners on first and third base. Naomi Andringa followed with an RBI-single, as did pinch-hitter Maja Kouwenhoven that narrowed the deficit to 7-5. But the inning then ended when Andringa was called out for interference, while advancing on a grounder by pinch-hitter Rhowan Stuart.

In the top of the sixth inning, Stephanie Reid reached on a bunt-single to register her fourth basehit in the game. But the speedy Canadian then was caught stealing by catcher Jeske Meewisse moments later.

In the top of the seventh inning, UVV got the bases loaded, but failed to add an insurance run, keeping the suspense alive. In the at bat, Natalie van der Wijst led off with a single, then Misja Koops reached on an error and Laura Arp walked with one out. Van der Wijst was then forced out at home and a pop-fly ended the inning. In the bottom of the at bat, Lacey Dinney walked Annemiek de Rover with one out, but then a strikeout and flyout ended the game to secure UVV's spot in next years big league.
