No-Hitter Terrasvogels; 6 HRs Sparks Haarlem
Nederlands
HAARLEM / SANTPOORT / ROSMALEN / ALKMAAR (Neth.) - Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem and Hotel Ambassador c.c. Terrasvogels won their second double-header of the season on Saturday and again wrote some headlines. Chantal Versluis and Debby Connor combined on six homeruns in the games of Sparks Haarlem against Centrals, which were won 12-2 and 10-0.

Terrasvogels won 6-3 and 9-0 vs. winless Tex Town Tigers and saw Malou van Dusschoten throw a No-Hitter in Game 2.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem and Gryphons split their double-header. Olympia Haarlem won the opener with a big 13-0 score to win its first game of the season, then Gryphons won the next game with a big score, 10-3.

Alcmaria Victrix and UVV also split. UVV won the opener 2-1 to record their first win of the season, then Alcmaria Victrix took Game 2 with a big 11-3 score.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. Centrals
At Haarlem, Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem opened its home season with two big scores against Centrals, 12-2 and 10-0. Centrals was led for the first time today by Bas Langezaal, who replaced Head Coach Caroline Theunissen after the first weekend. A week ago, Karin Tuk contributed to the wins at Tex Town Tigers with two homeruns, today, Chantal Versluis and Debby Connor each hit three homeruns in the double-header. Chantal Versluis became the first player in history to lead off both games of a double-header with a homerun.

In the opener, Sparks Haarlem initially faced a 2-0 deficit after completion of the top of the first inning. Pitcher Kirsten Scheele hit lead-off hitter Alma Hooi with a pitch, then gave up a bunt-single to Donna Hartman, which was followed by a throwing error, enabling Hooi to score the first run. With two outs, Hartman scored the second run on a single by Nikki Harte.

But that was it for Centrals, as it didn't reached base anymore, while Sparks Haarlem took charge of the game moments later. Chantal Versluis set the tone when she led off with a homerun, then Leigh Godfrey followed with a single, stole second base and advanced on a wild pitch. Nathatlie Gosewehr then walked and stole second base. The two runners put Sparks Haarlem ahead when Debby Connor followed with a double to make it 3-2.

Three runs were added in the second inning. Manoa Weijgertse led off with a walk, then Leigh Godfrey reached on a bunt-single with one out. With two outs, Debby Connor homered to lift the lead to 6-2.

The 10-run difference was reached in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chantal Versluis led off with her second homerun of the game to start the rally. Centrals committed three errors in this at bat, while Areke Spel (single), Karin Tuk (single), Shannah van der Kaaij (double) and Manoa Weijgertse (groundout) contributed with runscoring hits.

In Game 2, Chantal Versluis again led off the game for Sparks Haarlem with a homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Later in the at bat, with two outs, Debby Connor also homered to make it 2-0. In the second inning, Karin Tuk singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Versluis.

Sparks Haarlem then decided the game with a 7-run rally on nine basehits. Twelve batters entered the batter's box and with one out, 10 of them reached base safely. Except for Chantal Versluis, all players in the batting order hit a basehit in this at bat, but Chantal of course had done her bit earlier in the game. With one out, Debby Connor hit her second homerun in the game (she later also singled in her second at bat in this inning). A wild pitch, singles by Shannah van der Kaaij (one-run), Beau van Gelder (one-run), Leigh Godfrey (one-run) and a double by Nathalie Gosewehr (2-run) lifted the lead to 10-0.

Centrals reached base only twice off of Rebecca Soumeru, who gave up an one-out single in the first and in the third inning.

Hotel Ambassador c.c. Terrasvogels vs. Tex Town Tigers
At Santpoort, Hotel Ambassador c.c. Terrasvogels began its home season with a double victory against the young team of Tex Town Tigers, winning 6-3 and 9-0. Before the start of the first game and after the player introductions, a moment of silence was held to remember longtime Head Coach Teun van den Berg (who passed away in March) and former baseball-player/coach Jersey van Doornspeek (who passed away in January), who both were long affiliated with Terrasvogels.

In the first inning of Game 1, Terrasvogels opened the score thanks to a lead-off triple by Petra van Heijst and a following sacrifice fly by Marisèla de Wind. Later in the at bat, Anouk van den Heuvel also tripled, but was left behind.

Two runs were added in the second inning. Yonina Sint Jago led off with a single and stole second base, then advanced on a grounder by Cheryl Hiele. Next, Lisa Waasdorp walked. With two outs, the two runners scored on a single by Petra van Heijst to make it 3-0.

Tex Town Tigers was able to come alongside in the third at bat when some defensive plays didn't result in an out. With one out, Amber Krijgsman tripled, then Maaike Ogink reached on a fielder's choice without an out. Another fielder's choice-situation on a grounder by Annemiek Jansen then resulted in the first run and put runners on first and second base. Next at bat was Nadine Marinus, the most experienced player in the TTT-squad and the lone player left over from the championship-teams in 2008 and 2009. She followed with an RBI-single that brought Jansen to third base, who then scored the tying run on a grounder by Laura Wissink. But in the remainder of the game, TTT reached base only three more times and was held scoreless.

Terrasvogels re-took the lead in the home of the third when Solange Starrenburg led off with a single and scored when Anouk van den Heuvel followed with a double. Two more runs were added in the fourth inning when Lisa Waasdorp walked and scored on a single by Myrthe Smid, who later scored on a wild pitch.

Winning pitcher Ginger de Weert earned her third win of the season and struckout 13 batters.

Game 2 ended in a 9-0 win for Terrasvogels. Pitcher Malou van Dusschoten struckout five batters and threw a No-Hitter. Nadine Marinus was the lone TTT-player to reach base, as she walked in the first inning and was hit by a pitch in the fourth.

Terrasvogels struck with four runs in the first inning. Petra van Heijst and Marisèla de Wind led off with singles, then the first scored on an error. Solange Starrenburg followed with a double and a single by Anouk van den Heuvel accounted for the next two runs. The latter scored herself on a drive into rightfield by Yonina Sint Jago, who barely missed an inside-the-park-homerun. After passing third base for a triple, she appeared to have a chance for the fourbagger, but a nice throw from rookie rightfielder Madelief van Eekelen (who made her big league-debut) to short stop Laura Wissink to catcher Maaike Ogink resulted in an out at the plate.

The fifth run was added in the third inning when Marisèla de Wind led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a 2-out single by Kate Gentile.

Another 4-run rally followed in the fourth at bat off of 15-year old Shaneequa Kock, who relieved starter Amber Krijgsman. Cheryl Hiele led off with a double and scored on a single by Myrthe Smid. With one out, Petra van Heijst singled again. A single by Marisèla de Wind (who was 3-for-3) brought in the next run and a double by Solange Starrenburg produced two more runs and raised the lead to 9-0.
