UVV wins twice vs. Pirates in Promotion/Relegation Play-Off
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) - UVV defeated Amsterdam Pirates twice today (Saturday, September 28) in the opening double-header of the best-of-five Promotion/Relegation Play-Off. Playing at home, UVV won 7-0 and 9-1 and now needs one more win to remain in the Dutch big league for next season. The series continues next Saturday with a double-header in Amsterdam, starting at 2 PM.

UVV proved to be too strong today for Pirates, which had to to without is Australian pitcher Monique Faul. Last week, Pirates played a strong double-header against DSS to reach the Promotion/Relegation Play-Off. But in Game 2 of that double-header, Faul had to leave the game due to an injury and was kept aside today. Besides that, the team also has to do without another pitcher Ilona Andringa. The righthander, who also plays for the National Junior Team, left a few weeks ago to start study and playing at an university in Florida (USA).

Game One
In the opener, Canadian pitcher Lacey Dinney was a difficult obstacle for the Amsterdam-batters, who collected only two basehits.

However, Pirates did reach base immediately in the first at bat when Lizzie Clarijs led off with a walk. But, after a strikeout, she was caught stealing, then a strikeout ended the inning.

UVV then opened the score with two runs off of starter Anna-Bé Bartels. Lead-off hitter Laura Arp reached on an error and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Mirjam Boode and reached third base on a fielder's choice-grounder by Stephanie Reid. Moments later, the speedy Reid stole second base and when a throwing error followed, Arp could score. A following triple by Edith Riemsdijk then made it 2-0.

Bartels then retired the side in the second inning, including two strikeouts, but then gave up an additional run in the third at bat. Laura Arp again reached on an error, moved on a single by Mirjam Boode and scored on an one-out single by Sanne Bolhuis. A double play ended the inning.

In the third inning, Jeske Meewisse hit the first basehit for Pirates, but was left behind. Michelle van Waveren led off the fifth at bat with the second basehit for Amsterdam, but was eliminated in a double play. Amsterdam was unable to reach second base in this game.

In the home of the fifth inning, UVV rallied for four runs to end the game through the mercy-rule. And it again began with Laura Arp, who this time led off with a triple. She scored on a single by Mirjam Boode, which was followed by an RBI-triple by Stephanie Reid. Hereafter, Maja Kouwenhoven took over the pitching. With one out, a run was scored on an error, then Kirsten Vierdag hit a walk-off, runscoring single to make it 7-0.

Game Two
The second game today also ended through the mercy-rule and UVV outhit Amsterdam, 12-4.

But again, Amsterdam reached base right away in the first at bat and this time and even took an 1-0 lead off of starter Melissa Burger. The lead could have been bigger, but three runners were left behind.

Lead-off hitter Lizzie Clarijs reached on an error and advanced on a sacfrice bunt by Ella Krommendijk and single by Annemiek de Rover. Moments later, she put Amsterdam ahead 1-0 when Denice van Dijk also singled. After Van Dijk had stolen second base, De Rover was eliminated at home trying to score on a grounder in front of home plate by Suzanne Poelgeest. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Michelle van Waveren walked, but the three runners stranded as a groundout ended the inning.

In its first at bat, UVV answered with two runs with two outs off of Maja Kouwenhoven. Laura Arp led off with a single, moved on a sac-bunt by Mirjam Boode and a grounder. With two outs, a single by Sanne Bolhuis and double by Edith Riemsdijk made it 2-1.

UVV left two runners in the second inning, but then added a run in the third. Stephanie Reid led off with a single, moved on a grounder and scored on a single by Riemsdijk. But later in the at bat, the home team also stranded two runners.

In the fourth inning, Amsterdam got a chance to score another runner as its first two batters reached base. Michelle van Waveren led off with a single and Kelly Koeman reached on an error, which brought the first to third base. Next, pinch-hitter Shanna van Vegten struckout, which led to a double play, as Koeman was caught stealing. While diving into second base, Koeman twisted her fingers and had to leave the game. A grounder ended the at bat.

In the home of the fourh inning, UVV took a mercy-rule lead by scoring six runs off of new pitcher Anna-Bé Bartels. Three of the runs were unearned, as the Amsterdam-defense committed three errors. Mirjam Boode, Sanne Bolhuis and Cintia de Groodt contributed with RBI-singles, while Natalie van der Wijst added an RBI-double that concluded the rally and made it 9-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, Melissa Burger retired the side to end the game.

Laura Arp scored twice for UVV in this game to give her a total of five for the day. Stephanie Reid scored four runs today.
