Top-4 2013 begins with victories; Dagmar Bloeming Perfect
Nederlands
HAARLEM / ROSMALEN / VLEUTEN / ALKMAAR (Neth.) - Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels, Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem, FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem and Alcmaria Victrix, the top-4 of last season, today opened the new season by winning their scheduled double-headers.

Last season, Sparks Haarlem dominated (again) and was the first team to qualify for the Play-Offs, shortly followed thereafter by Terrasvogels. Olympia Haarlem then became the third team and in the final week of the regular season, Alcmaria Victrix (which was the reigning champion) became the fourth team to reach the Play-Offs.

In the Play-Offs, Alcmaria Victrix eliminated Olympia Haarlem, then was eliminated itself by Terrasvogels. In an exciting Holland Series, it was Terrasvogels that stunned everyone by winning the best-of-five against Sparks Haarlem 3-2 and capture the Dutch championship-title for the first time since 2007.

Today (Saturday, April 12) was Opening Day in the Dutch big league and Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels was the lone team that didn't gave up a run. The champion registered two shutout-victories vs. DSS, which last season promoted to the big league after winning the title in the 'Overgangsklasse' (second highest league). Behind strong pitching of Femke van Dusschoten and Ginger de Weert (21 strikeouts combined), Terrasvogels won 7-0 and 5-0.

In its first double-header of the season, Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem immediately underscored that it again has a squad that will dominate the league. The team collected 36 runs and 30 basehits, including seven homeruns, to win 21-1 and 15-0 vs. Gryphons, which last season was a contender for a Play-Off spot until the final weekend. Dagmar Bloeming threw a Perfect Game in Game 2.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won twice vs. UVV. The team from Haarlem gained more depth in the off-season and opened the new season with victories of 11-2 and 7-2.

Alcmaria Victrix, which is led by a new coaching-staff, won 4-1 and 13-6 vs. Centrals, which is playing this season with a young and unexperienced team.

DSS vs. Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels
At Haarlem, Dutch champion Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels opened the new season with two shutout-victories, winning 7-0 and 5-0 vs. DSS.

Terrasvogels lost some experienced players after last season. However, they (and those from the previous season) all remain linked to the club, meaning can always fill in when needed. In the off-season, Terrasvogels added several young and talented players, who currently also play for the Dutch Junior Team or have played for the national youth-team. Mixed with the remaining experience in the team, Terrasvogels will be a contender again this year. Also joining Terrasvogels were National Team-players Femke van Dusschoten, Jessie van Aalst and Britt Vonk. The latter will join the team in May when she returns from the USA. In January, the team of Head Coach Marco Molleman earned its first succes by winning the annual international Indoor Cup in Schiedam.

After promoting to the big league thanks to winning the championship last year, DSS also added some to its roster. The team from Haarlem also has several players with experience in the national youth teams and will be a fine addition to this years league, led by Head Coach Werner Angermann.

In the opener, Terrasvogels opened the score in the third inning after all batters had faced rookie-pitcher Anouk Sassen for the first time in the previous two at bats. In the third, Marisèla de Wind led off with a single, then newcomer Jessie van Aalst walked and Anouk van den Heuvel moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Next, Lisa Waasdorp loaded the bases on an fielder's choice-grounder. Hereafter, Kate Gentile became the second out. Her pop-fly near first base was dropped, but the infield-fly rule was in effect. However, due to the error, De Wind scored and Van Aalst moved to third base. A triple by rookie Lizzie Clarijs then accounted for the next two runs and made it a 3-0 score. Shortly before, Clarijs, also a newcomer in the squad, made a great defensive play at short, retiring batter Eva Halman.

Terasvogels added a 4-run rally in the fifth inning. With one out and Anouk van den Heuvel (fielder's choice) on first base, Lisa Waasdorp singled and Kate Gentile added an RBI-single. Gentile initially retired after last season, but made her comeback due to some current injuries in the team. The bases were loaded when Lizzie Clarijs walked, then Jessica Waasdorp connected for an RBI-single and Gabi Obia (who last season played for DSS) added a 2-run single to lift the lead to 7-0.

Pitcher Femke van Dusschoten made her comeback in the Terrasvogels-team. She played for the team in 2009 and 2010, then played two seasons for Alcmaria Victrix, winning the Dutch championship in 2012. Last season, she played for La Loggia in the Italian Softball League and there, she also won the national championship. Today, she retired the first nine batters in a row, including five with a strikeout. The Perfect Game was broken in the fourth inning when Noa Brand led off with a single, but she was caught stealing moments later. Van Dusschoten faced only 15 batters in the 5-inning game and struckout nine batters.

In Game 2, pitcher Ginger de Weert threw a 3-hitter and struckout 12 batters. She allowed only one DSS-player to reach third base and that happened in the sixth inning.

Terrasvogels collected eight basehits, including three by Marisèla de Wind, who singled, doubled and tripled.

This time, Terrasvogels opened the score right away in the first inning off of Quincey Catsburg. Gabi Obia led off with a triple down the leftfield-line and scored on a following grounder by Marisèla de Wind.

The second run was added in the third at bat and involved the same two players. Obia reached on an error, stole second base and advanced on a throwing error, then scored on a single by De Wind.

In the fifth, it was De Wind who scored herself. With one out, she doubled, then scored when Jessie van Aalst followed with a triple.

The remaining two runs were scored in the seventh inning. With one out, Obia reached on an error, then scored when on a triple by De Wind, which was the third triple for the team in this game. After Van Aalst walked, De Wind scored on a force play-grounder by Van den Heuvel.

For DSS, Judith van Tiel walked with one out in the first inning and Kim Scholtes singled with two outs, but then Ginger de Weert finished with a strikeout. She then struckout the side in the second at bat. In the third inning, Madelon Paauwe led off with a single, but was forced out. De Weert then threw three hitless innings, striking out the side again in the fifth. In the seventh, Anouk Sassen accounted for the third and final basehit for DSS.

Today's games were played at the site of Kinheim (which has artificial grass), as the home field of DSS was not yet available due to the use by soccer-teams.

Gryphons vs. Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem
At Rosmalen, Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem overpowered Gryphons by winning big twice, 21-1 and 15-0, to set the tone for the new season. In previous seasons, Sparks Haarlem already was one of the strongest teams in the league, but it added even more strength this year. National Team-players Dagmar Bloeming, Nathalie Timmermans and Saskia Kosterink all rejoined the team from Haarlem after having played in Italy last season. Bloeming and Timmermans then played for Caserta, while Kosterink completed her fourth season with Bollate. With this trio, Sparks Haarlem is now almost entirely composed of current players of the Netherlands National Softball Team and also has some former national team-players. But the team currently has to do without Rebecca Soumeru, who last season was the Best Pitcher of the league with a 21-0 record. She is sidelined with an injury.

Today, the team of Head Coach Juni Francisca collected 30 basehits in the double-header, including seven homeruns. Chantal Versluis and Nathalie Gosewehr both homered twice.

Last season, Sparks Haarlem led the league with 32 homeruns. In total, 82 homeruns were hit in the big league last year, 25 of which were hit at the site of Gryphons. 19 of these homeruns were hit in Rosmalen by visiting teams, including six on May 11 by Terrasvogels.

In the opening game, Sparks Haarlem led 10-1 after four innings, then rallied for eleven runs in the fifth at bat win huge. Last season, Sparks Haarlem registered to 20-plus run victories, including a 27-0 shutout vs. Terrasvogels, to whom it later lost the Holland Series.

Sparks Haarlem collected 19 basehits in the first game, including five homeruns, two by Nathalie Gosewehr. Chantal Versluis and Virginie Anneveld both had three basehits. Versluis also scored four runs.

In the first inning, five runs were scored. Versluis led off the game with a single, advanced on an error and stole third base. She then scored when Nathalie Gosewehr followed with a homerun to give Sparks Haarlem an early lead. Next batter Saskia Kosterink was then hit by a pitch from Shannon Galea in her first at bat in the Dutch regular season since 2009 (she played in some postseason-games in following years). The bases were loaded when Debby Connor and Virginie Anneveld singled and while the first was eliminated in a pick-off, Kosterink scored. Karin Tuk then walked and Areke Spel followed with a 2-run triple to make it 5-0.

Four runs were added in the second inning. Versluis walked and Gosewehr was hit by a pitch, then both scored on a double by Kosterink, who later scored herself on a wild pitch. With one out, Anneveld singled again and a 2-out, 2-run double by Spel then made it 9-0.

Gryphons then scored its lone run of the game in the third inning off of Kirsten Scheele. With two outs, Shannon Galea and Cindy van der Zanden singled.' Galea then scored when Belgian Ennia Ballardini also singled, but that was all today for the team of Head Coach Wout Isbouts.

Sparks Haarlem got the run back immediately in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by Anneveld, then rallied for eleven runs in the fifth at bat. The team collected nine basehits in this inning, including a record four homeruns! Nine of the eleven runs were score with two outs. Nathalie Timmermans led off with a homerun, then Manoa Weijgertse and Versluis singled. A run was then scored in a stolen base-situation, followed by two outs. Debby Connor then singled in a run. With two runners on base, Karin Tuk hit a 3-run homerun. Last season, she set a record with 10 homeruns. After a walk and a single, Weijgertse hit a 2-run double (her second basehit in the inning), then Chantal Versluis (2-run) and Nathalie Gosewehr (solo) followed with back-to-back homeruns, making it a 21-1 score.

Kirsten Scheele gave up only three hits, while Shannon Galea went the distance (!) for Gryphons and gave up 19 hits, while being credited with 13 earned runs of the 21 she gave up.

In Game 2, Sparks Haarlem needed just over an hour to complete the game, winning 15-0. Dagmar Bloeming threw a 3-inning Perfect Game in her first regular season-game for the team since 2012 after having played in Italy last season. The righthander struckout six batters.

UVV vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem
At Vleuten, FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won twice vs. UVV, 11-2 and 7-2.

Olympia Haarlem added several players in the off-season, including pitcher Eva Voortman and infielders Nikki Harte and Shareday Christina, who are all on the roster of the Netherlands National Softball Team. Christina will join her new team somewhere in May after completion of her study and season in the USA.

In the opening game, Olympia Haarlem collected 13 basehits, including three by Dominique Sprengers, who also had four runs batted in. Lindsey Meadows and Nikki Harte each had three RBI's.

In the first at bat, Olympia Haarlem took a 3-0 lead. With one out, Eva Voortman singled in her first at bat as an Olympia-player (she played for Centrals in the previous seasons). Dinet Oosting followed with a single and then the first run was scored on a double by Lindsey Meadows. A single by Dominique Sprengers and sacrifice fly by Nikki Harte then made it 3-0 for the squad of Head Coach Caroline Powell.

Two runs were added in the third inning when Meadows hit another RBI-double. She then moved to third base on a single by Sprengers and scored on another sac-fly by Harte.

UVV answered with two runs in its third bat off of Meadows. With one out, Canadian newcomer Chelsey Schoenfeldt singled and scored on a following double by Laura Arp. With two outs, the latter scored on a single by Stephanie Reid, who returned in the UVV-squad this year.

In the fourth inning, Olympia Haarlem rallied for four runs off of Melissa Burger. The bases were loaded by Merel Oosterveld (error on bunt), Eva Voortman (bunt-single) and Dinet Oosting (hit by pitch). A force play at home followed on a grounder by Meadows, but then Sprengers cleared the bases with a 3-run triple. Moments later, Harte added an RBI-single to make it 9-2.

A single by Oosting and sac-fly by Meadows lifted the lead to 11-2 in the fifth inning.

Game 2 was much closer in the first three innings, as Olympia Haarlem was then leading only 3-2. But in the remaining four innings, UVV was held scoreless by Eva Voortman, while Olympia Haarlem added four more runs off of Chelsey Schoenfeldt.

Olympia Haarlem opened the score with two runs in the first inning when Merel Oosterveld and Eva Voortman both scored on a wild pitch. UVV got one run back in the home half of the first at bat. With one out, rookie Zuleinys Salesia tripled and scored on a following double by Stephanie Reid. UVV then got the bases loaded when Schoenfeldt and Misja Koops walked with two outs, but the team left the bases loaded.

In the third inning, Olympia added a run when Voortman led off with a single and scored on a sac-fly by Meadows. But again, UVV narrowed the deficit moments later when Salesia and Reid produced again. Salesia led off with a double and scored on a single by Reid, but that was to be all for the home team, which is led again by Head Coach Hubert Bomba.

Olympia took more distance by scoring three runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Merel Oosterveld hit an inside-the-park-homerun, then Eva Voortman grounded out. Next, Dinet Oosting walked and Olympia Haarlem then became the first team to use the Temporary Runner by bringing Voortman as pinch-runner for Oosting. The Temporary Runner is introduced this season and allows coaches to use a pinch-runner for their catcher when she is a runner on base with two outs. The Temporary Runner is the player who was last eliminated in the inning and is not counted as an official substitute (which of course is not possible, as the TR already is in the active line-up). With this, the catcher can put on her gear in the meantime to speed up the game a little. However, the use of a TR is a choice for coaches, meaning they don't have to replace their catcher while she is running with two outs. This means, that the TR-rule has no influence at all in the speed and length of a game.

OK, back to the inning. With Voortman running at first base, a triple by Meadows and double by Sprengers made it 6-2. The final run was added in the seventh inning off of new pitcher Cintia de Groodt when Voortman scored in a caught stealing-situation.

Alcmaria Victrix vs. Centrals

At Alkmaar, Alcmaria Victrix won its opening double-header vs. Centrals with scores of 4-1 and 13-6. Both teams lost several experienced players after last season. And so, the two teams are playing with a young squad, but Alcmaria Victrix has the most experience its team. Centrals mainly plays with players who last season played in their second team and/or junior squad.

Both teams are led by a new coaching staff. At Alcmaria Victrix, Sandra Gouverneur took over as Head Coach, succeeding Gonny Farley and will be assisted by Frans de Bruijn, who last year was the Head Coach of Onze Gezellen in the 'Overgangsklasse'. Gouverneur was last active in the Dutch big league as Head Coach in 2010 when she led the Dutch Junior Team. Willy Juana is the new Head Coach of Centrals and replaced Bas Langezaal. Juana will be assisted by Petia Sokolová, who also is a utility player.

Alcmaria Victrix opened the score with two runs in the first inning off of American newcomer Casey Pomeroy. Anne Blaauwgeers, who was sidelined during the exhibition season with an injury, led off with a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Buizer. Hereafter, Lorraine Kieft (who also recovered from an injury) also walked. The two runners advanced on a sac-bunt by newcomer Rachel van Veen, then the runs were scored on a wild pitch and a single by Merel Zandvliet, who also is a newcomer in Alkmaar.

Two runs were added in the second inning. Brenda Beers led off with a triple and scored on a grounder by Desiree Adriaansz. Beers (like Blaauwgeers and Kieft a catcher) also was sidelined in the last few weeks with an ankle-injury, but recovered in time for the start of the season. Moments later, Anne Blaauwgeers singled and scored the next run on a single by Lorraine Kieft, her first in the big league.

In the third inning, Centrals got one run back. With one out, Nina Ceulemans singled in her first big league at bat. Centrals then got the bases loaded when American newcomer Amanda Steele reached on a fielder's choice-error and Sokolová singled. A run was then scored when Franka van Dijk reached on an error, but Steele was eliminated at home when she also tried to score.

In the fourth inning, Centrals got the bases loaded with two outs via two walks and an error, but a grounder ended the at bat.

Winning pitcher Svenja de Lincel struckout nine batters and gave up only four hits.

In the second game, Alcmaria Victrix rallied for seven runs in the second inning to take a comfortable lead. In the at bat, Alcmaria hit only three basehits, while the defense of Centrals committed three errors. Rachel van Veen led off with a walk and later scored on a squeeze by Laura Treurniet. A single by Maaike Blaauwgeers and two wild pitches then accounted for the next three runs. With runners on second and third base, Lorraine Kieft then singled in the next run and was able to circle the bases on two errors, which brought in two more runs and it 7-0.

Centrals answered with three runs in the third inning on singles by Petia Sokolová (one-run) and Casey Pomeroy (2-run), but Alcmaria scored two more runs in its third at bat, thanks to a stolen base and passed ball.

Both teams scored once in the fifth inning. Centrals on a double by rookie Charelle Kooy and Alcmaria on another wild pitch.

In the top of the 6th inning, Centrals narrowed the deficit to 10-6 by scoring twice, thanks to a triple by Laura Bakker and a wild pitch. In the home of the 6th, Alcmaria reached the 7-run difference by scoring three more runs. First, two runs were scored on a single by Svenja de Lincel and the game ended when a run was scored on a grounder by Melissa de Greef.
