Terrasvogels adds 2 shutouts; Versluis adds 2 HRs
Nederlands
SANTPOORT / HAARLEM / DE BILT (Neth.) - Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels, Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem and FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem added two victories on Saturday, while Centrals and Gryphons both earned their first win of the season.

Terrasvogels added two shutouts, winning 7-0 and 10-0 vs. UVV and now has four shutouts in a row since the start of the season. The last team to accomplish this also was Terrasvogels, as it began the 2007 season with five consecutive shutouts.

Sparks Haarlem won 11-1 and 7-0 vs. DSS and added five more homeruns to its total, including two more by Chantal Versluis.

Olympia Haarlem registered 9-0 and 5-0 shutouts vs. Alcmaria Victrix, which had started the season a week ago with two victories.

Gryphons and Centrals were both winless after the Opening Weekend. Gryphons opened today's double-header with a 5-1 win, but then was left empty-handed in Game 2. The team failed to hold onto the lead twice and lost 4-3 to Centrals, which broke a 5-game losing streak.

Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels vs. UVV
At Santpoort, reigning champion Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels opened its home season by winning 7-0 and 10-0 vs. UVV, which hit only two basehits in the double-header.

Before today's first game, there was a moment of silence to remember Martin de Jonker, Henk Hoenderdos and Bram van der Werf. Terrasvogels-chairman Michael Laarman looked back to the successful and emotional season of the team last year. It won the European Cup Winners Cup and captured the Dutch National Championship, but also had to say goodbye to three persons, who were closely associated with the club and the team. Martin de Jonker was the club's Secretary, but he was also the Team Manager of the women's softball-team and did many, many things for the players and staff, becoming 'the father' of the team. Henk Hoenderdos was 'the voice' of Terrasvogels, as he was the Public Address Announcer the last four seasons at home games. And Bram van der Werf was a club icon, who coached several teams in all age groups with the club. He was the team's Pitching Coach for 34 seasons (1966-1999) and was always on the field to give advice to players, whether it were players of Terrasvogels of their opponent. Luckily, all three were able to enjoy the succcess of last season, but unfortunately they passed away in October, December and January respectively.

In the opening game, Ginger de Weert threw an one-hitter and struckout six batters. After having retired the first six batters in a row, she gave up a lead-off single to Naomi Andringa in the third inning. But she was forced out on a grounder by Bente Erkelens, who was the lone UVV-player to reach third base after two passed balls.

Terrasvogels opened the score in the first inning with one run off of Chelsey Schoenfeldt. With one out, Marisèla de Wind was hit by a pitch, then moved to third base on a single by Jessie van Aalst and scored on a force play-grounder by Anouk van den Heuvel.

After being held scoreless in the next two at bats, Terrasvogels scored twice in the fourth inning. With one out, Lizzie Clarijs walked and with two ous, Jessica Waasdorp reached on an error. Both then scored when Gabi Obia followed with a double.

Terrasvogels then rallied for four runs on six hits in the fifth inning to reach the 7-run difference and end the game. Jessie van Aalst, Anouk van den Heuvel and Lisa Waasdorp (RBI) all singled to produce a run, then a wild pitch accounted for the next run. Kate Gentile (RBI) and Lizzie Clarijs then hit the fourth and fifth consecutive single in the inning. With one out, pinch-hitter Lisa Molenaar singled in her first big league at bat to bring in the seventh run and end the game.

In Game 2, Terrasvogels struck early with four runs in the first at bat. The home team then added three more in the second and third inning to end the game through the 10-run mercy rule in the fourth inning.

Femke van Dusschoten threw another one-hitter and struckout nine batters. She began by striking out the first four batters she faced. After having retired nine batters in a row, she gave up a lead-off single to Laura Arp, but she would be the lone baserunner for UVV, which committed six errors.

In the first at bat, Gabi Obia was hit by a pitch and Marisèla de Wind walked to start an early rally. A double by Jessie van Aalst, grounder by Anouk van den Heuvel, an error on a grounder by Kate Gentile and a single by Jessica Waasdorp then made it 4-0.

In the third inning, Myrthe Smid led off with a single, then the bases were loaded when Gabi Obia reached on an error and Jessie van Aalst walked. Anouk van den Heuvel then delivered a 2-run single, followed by a sac-fly by Lisa Waasdorp.

The 10-run difference was reached in the third inning on RBI-singles by Jessie van Aalst and Lisa Waasdorp, plus a basesloaded walk for Jessica Waasdorp.

Sparks Haarlem added five more homeruns today, including a grand slam by Debby Connor. Like in the opening weekend, Chantal Versluis homered twice and now has four after four games. Teammate Karin Tuk, who hit her second homerun of the season today, set the single-season record last season with 10 homeruns.

In the first game, Sparks Haarlem collected eleven basehits, including three by Virginie Anneveld, while winning pitcher Kirsten Scheele threw a 2-hitter and struckout five batters.

Initially, Sparks Haarlem trailed briefly, as DSS took an 1-0 lead in the top of first inning. Noa Brand led off with a double, moved on a passed ball and scored on an one-out grounder by Morgan Sampson.

In the home of the first, Sparks Haarlem opened the same way, as Chantal Versluis led off with a double. But she was caught stealing at third base. The home team then erased the 1-0 deficiti when Karin Tuk homered with two outs.

After Sparks Haarlem left two runners in the second inning, DSS threatened to score again in the third at bat. Tessa Hoekstra led off with a single, then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Anouk In den Kleef, who herself also reached base safely on a fielder's choice. A passed ball brought the two runners in scoring position, but they stranded as three outs followed.

Sparks Haarlem then rallied for five (unearned) runs in the home of the third to take a commanding 6-1 lead. With one out, Saskia Kosterink and Karin Tuk reached on errors, which led to a run. A single by Debby Connor and double by Virginie Anneveld then brought in the next two runs, followed by RBI-triples by Areke Spel and Michelle van Driel.

Five more runs were then scored in the fourth inning and the game then ended with back-to-back homeruns. The bases got loaded when Chantal Versluis reached on an error, Saskia Kosterink doubled and Karin Tuk walked. Next, Debby Connor hit a grand slam homerun on a 3-0 count to lift the lead to 10-1. On the very next pitch, Virginie Anneveld also homered to end the game.

In Game 2, Dagmar Bloeming struckout 12 batters and gave up only one hit. The righthander retired the first 10 batters she faced, the last six of them with a strikeout. She then gave up an one-out double in the fourth inning to Denice van Dijk, who would be the lone runner for DSS.

Chantal Versluis gave her team a 3-0 lead by hitting two homeruns in the first two innings. In the first at bat, she led off with a homerun. With two outs, Sparks Haarlem got the bases loaded, but three runners stranded. In the second inning, Shannah van der Kaaij walked with one out, then Versluis homered again to make it 3-0. Last season, Versluis hit six homeruns.

In the fourth inning, two runs were added thanks to singles by Anneveld and Spel to make it 5-0. The 7-run difference was then reached in the sixth at bat. With one out, Kosterink and Tuk hit back-to-back doubles to bring in a run. The game then ended on a single by Virginie Anneveld, who also had produced the final run in the opening game.

Anneveld again collected three basehits in Game 2 and now leads the league with 11, while also being the leading hitter with an .846 average.

In the home of the first inning, Olympia Haarlem opened the score with two runs. With one out, Eva Voortman singled and Dinet Oosting was hit by a pitch, then respectively scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

A 4-run rally followed in the second at bat with two outs. The bases then got loaded when Laura Burggraaf doubled, Merel Oosterveld walked and Eva Voortman reached on a bunt-single. The bases were cleared when Dinet Oosting followed with a double that lifted the lead to 5-0. The latter (who was the catcher) was then replaced by Eva Voortman as Temporary Runner, who went on to score her second run in the at bat while Lindsey Meadows (who walked) stole second base.

After a scoreless third inning, the home team scored three unearned runs in the fourth without hitting a basehit. With the bases loaded, a run was scored when a foul-fly was caught, then the remaining two runs were added when a fly by Stephanie Ruiter was dropped in the outfield.

For Alcmaria, Anne Blaauwgeers led off the game with a single in the first inning, moved on a sacrifice bunt, but then was called out for leaving second base too early. In the second inning, Laura Treurniet singled with two outs, but from that moment on, Lindsey Meadows retired the next ten batters she faced.

In Game 2, Olympia Haarlem also opened the score in the first at bat. Merel Oosterveld led off with a single and went on to score on a 2-out triple by Meadows.

Two runs were added in the third. This time, Laura Burggraaf led off with a double and Eva Voortman reached on an error with one out, which led to a run. Moments later, Voortman scored on a single by Dinet Oosting.

The remaining two runs were scored in the fifth at bat when Voortman (walk) and Oosterveld (error) scored on a 2-run single by Meadows, who was 3-for-3 and collected three RBI's.

Winning pitcher Eva Voortman struckout 10 batters and gave up two hits. She took a Perfect Game into the fifth inning, but that was broken with one out when Maaike Blaauwgeers singled. She also accounted for the second Alcmaria-basehit, which she hit with two outs in the seventh inning.

In the opener, the game remained scoreless for four innings. Gryphons collected four basehits and stranded four runners, while the first nine batters of Centrals were retired in order by Mariëlle Vleugels. In the home of the fourth, Centrals reached base twice, but stranded runners on second and third base.

Gryphons then struck with three runs in the top of the 5th inning off of Casey Pomeroy. Kelly De Lannoy led off with a single, then an error was made on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Galea. With one out, the two scored when Ennia Ballardini reached on a throwing error, which brought her to third base. She then scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by Mariëlle Vleugels to give Gryphons a 3-0 lead.

Centrals got one run back in the sixth inning when Jasmin Carlson led off with a double, moved on a sac-bunt by Emma Bosman and scored on a single by Franka van Dijk.

In the seventh inning, Gryphons increased its lead to 5-1 by adding two runs. With one out, Mariëlle Vleugels singled and scored on a following triple by Erin Belles. The latter scored with two outs on a single by Kelly De Lannoy.

In Game 2, Gryphons failed to hold the lead twice. The team first took a 2-0 lead in the first at bat off of Jessica Paterson, who last pitched in the big league in 2011. With two outs, Vleugels reached on an error and Belles was hit by a pitch, then Emily Wiemken and Kiki Draaijer followed with RBI-singles.

But Centrals came alongside immediately in its first at bat off of Shannon Galea. Jasmin Carlson led off with a double and then Casey Pomeroy was hit by a pitch. After the two had advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Franka van Dijk, Wishe van Heijningen delivered an RBI-single and the tying run was then scored on a squeeze, sacrifice bunt by Petia Sokolová.

After the first inning, the game remained scoreless in the next five innings. In that span, Gryphons hit six basehits, but left five runners. Centrals was less productive. It stranded two runners in the second inning, but then eleven batters were retired in a row by Galea.

Gryphons then re-took the lead in the seventh inning when Cindy van der Zanden led off with an inside-the-park-homerun. The 3-2 lead appeared to be enough, but then Centrals scored two unearned runs in the home of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Laura Bakker led off with a single, but was caught stealing. A pop-fly then accounted for the second out, but then Jasmin Carlson reached when her hit was missed in the outfield. Hereafter, Casey Pomeroy was hit by a pitch and Franka van Dijk then followed with a 2-run, walk-off double that gave Centrals its first win of the season.
