Dutch Juniors again win twice
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) - After winning the two opening games a week earlier, the Dutch Junior Team again won twice on Sunday to remain unbeaten in the big league-season. This time, the Juniors won 5-2 and 8-4 vs. UVV, which is now winless after six games. On Saturday, UVV was shutout twice by reigning champion Hotel Ambassador Haarlem Terrasvogels.

This is the fifth season that the Juniors play in the Dutch big league. The team never began with a victory and now has four in a row to join Terrasvogels, Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem and FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem, who also won their first four games of the season.

With 38, the Junior Team has scored the second most runs in the league so far, trailing only Sparks Haarlem, which has scored 54.

For the Junior-squad, this season is part of the preparations for the European Junior Championship, which will be held July 21-28 in Rosmalen at the site of Gryphons. This also was the location for the same event two years ago.

In the opener, the Juniors broke an 1-1 tie in the third inning and took more distance from the fourth inning. The team was outhit 9-8, but played solid defense, turning three double plays.

The Juniors took an 1-0 lead in the first at bat off of Chelsey Schoenfeldt, who went the distance for UVV. Lead-off hitter Wies Ligtvoet reached on an error and scored on an one-out single by Manoa Weijgertse.

UVV came alongside in its first at bat off of starter Quincey Catsburg. With one out, UVV got the bases loaded when Zuleinys Salesia singled, Chelsey Schoenfeldt walked and Sanne Bolhuis also singled. After a strikeout, the tying run was scored on a passed ball, but UVV then stranded two runners when another strikeout followed.

The Juniors then scored twice in the third inning to take a definitive lead. With one out, Brenda Beers singled and scored on a double by Manoa Weijgertse, who then stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rachel van Veen to make it 3-1.

UVV got one run back in its third at bat. After the Juniors had turned a double play, Sanne Bolhuis walked and Misja Koops reached on an error. She then scored on a single by Marleen van Gastel and a following single by Naomi Andringa then loaded the bases, but the three runners stranded.

The Juniors took more distance by adding runs in the fourth and fifth inning. In the fourth, Lizzie Clarijs reached on an error, stole second base and scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth, Brenda Beers led off with a walk and went on to score on a double by Rachel van Veen.

In Game 2, UVV took an 1-0 lead in the first inning off of starter Shannon Hetem when Naomi Andringa (fielder's choice) scored on a triple by Chelsey Schoenfeldt. But hererafter, Hetem finished strong and struckout the next two batters.

In the second inning, Hetem again closed with a strikeout with a runner on second base and then the Juniors rallied for four runs in the third at bat. Fleur Bos led off with a single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Shaneequa Kock and scored the tying run on a single by Damishah Charles. The Juniors then took a 2-1 lead when Brenda Beers followed with a single and two runs were added when Lizzie Clarijs and Isa Los both reached on errors.

In the fifth, UVV narrowed the deficit to 4-2 off of Lisa Hop, who had taken over the pitching in the previous inning. Naomi Andringa led off with a single, moved on a wild pitch and a grounder and then scored on another wild pitch.

The Juniors then rallied for four more runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. All runs were unearned, as the UVV-defense committed two errors. With one out, Brenda Beers reached on an error, then scored on a 2-out single by Rachel van Veen. Next, Isa Los also reached on an error and then pinch-hitter Manoa Weijgertse delivered a 2-run triple. After a walk for Annemiek Jansen, Weijgertse scored on a single by Fleur Bos (who was 3-for-3) to increase the lead to 8-2. Weijgertse now shares the lead in the big league with eight runs batted in.
