Sparks Haarlem hands Dutch Juniors first two losses
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem needed less than eight innings today (Sunday, April 27) to hand the Dutch Junior Team two big shutout-losses. In Game 2, Sparks Haarlem added 13 basehits, including homeruns by Areke Spel, Nathalie Timmermans and Manoa Weijgertse. All homeruns were hit in the fourth inning, and the one hit by Spel was a 2-run, walk-off homerun. In this game, pitcher Dagmar Bloeming also threw a 3-hitter and struckout seven batters.

Sparks Haarlem had a 7-run rally in both games.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. Dutch Junior Team

In the first game today, the home team opened the score with two runs in the first inning. Lead-off hitter Chantal Versluis was hit by a pitch, stole second base and moved on a wild pitch, then next hitter Nathalie Gosewehr walked and also stole second base. After a line-out, the two scored when Debby Connor singled.

A 7-run rally on five hits then followed in the second inning. Shannah van der Kaaij led off with a walk, then Manoa Weijgertse singled with one out. After the two advanced on a wild pitch, the bases got loaded when Chantal Versluis also walked. Another wild pitch followed to bring in a run and then a single by Nathalie Gosewehr brought in the next run. It also led to a pitching change, as Shannon Hetem took over for Lisa Hop. An error then followed when Gosewehr took off to steal second base, enabling Versluis to score. Debby Connor then added a 2-run double. With two outs, a single by Nathalie Timmermans and double by Van der Kaaij in her second at bat in this inning lifted the lead to 9-0.

The 10-run difference was reached in the home of the third inning. With one out, Manoa Weijgertse doubled and scored when Chantal Versluis also doubled. However, the latter was then called out on an appeal-play for missing first base and therefore ended up with no basehit at all. With two outs, Nathalie Gosewehr hit her third homerun of the season to make it 11-0.

The Juniors collected only three basehits off of Kirsten Scheele and reached second base only twice. After the first five batters were retired in order, Dominique Sprengers walked with two outs in the second inning and stole second base, but then stranded. In the fourth at bat, Isa Los singled with one out and Sprengers singled with two outs, but no runs were scored.

In Game 2, Junior-starter Quincey Catsburg initially held Sparks Haarlem scoreless in the first two innings, despite giving up four hits. In the first, Sparks Haarlem got the bases loaded with one out, but then Virginie Anneveld lined into a double play. In the second, runners stranded on first and third base.

Sparks Haarlem-pitcher Dagmar Bloeming struckout the side in the first inning, but then the Juniors came close to a run in the next at bat. Laura Wissink led off with a single, then Rachel van Veen followed with a double. But then, the first was eliminated near third base on a comeback-grounder by Brenda Beers. A force out and strikeout then ended the inning.

Sparks Haarlem then struck with another 7-run rally in the third inning, this time on six basehits. Areke Spel and Saskia Kosterink led off with singles, then scored on a triple by Karin Tuk, who herself scored on a single by Virginie Anneveld. Nathalie Timmermans then struckout, but reached on a passed ball and a single by Michelle van Driel then brought in another run, but also another pitcher, as Dominique Sprengers took over. She began with two quick outs (strikeout, flyout), but then walked Nathalie Gosewehr to load the bases. Another walk followed for Areke Spel and then Saskia Kosterink added a 2-run double to make it 7-0. The bases got loaded again hereafter when Karin Tuk walked, but a force out then ended the at bat, leaving three runners behind.

After Dagmar Bloeming retired the side again in the top of the fourth inning (adding two strikeouts), Sparks Haarlem used the long ball in the bottom half to reach the 10-run difference and end the game. First, Nathalie Timmermans led off with a homerun and with two outs, Manoa Weijgertse also homered to make it 9-0. Next, Nathalie Gosewehr walked and then Areke Spel hit the third homerun in the inning, which was a walk-off, 2-run shot to end the game, as it lifted the lead to 11-0.
