Ban-Topa hands Twins first loss

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - Twins suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday (May 2). The team from Oosterhout began the day with an 11-5 win vs. Ban-Topa Future Stars to extend its winning streak to seven games. But hereafter, Twins lost 9-2 in Game 2.

Despite the loss, Twins remains the league-leader, sharing first place in the Silver League with HCAW, which also lost its first game of the season today.

Ban-Topa now shares fifth place.

The opener was highlighted by two homeruns by Sandy Lauwers, who now leads the league with four.

Game 1

Australian pitcher Michelle Edgtton struckout eleven batters in the opener and became the first 5-game winner of the season in the Silver League. She was supported with 14 basehits, including four by Sophie Bugter and three by Femke Duffhues, plus two homeruns by Sandy Lauwers.

Twins struck early with three runs in the first at bat. Femke Duffhues led off with a single, moved on a sac-bunt by Manon van Alebeek, then scored on a double by Sophie Bugter. An error followed on a grounder by Sandy Lauwers, then an error on a hit by Michelle Edgtton and a grounder by Minke Blok made it 3-0.

Ban-Topa got two runs back in its first inning. With one out, Lee Ann Craanberg singled and Jeannevian Kinburn walked. The two then scored when Jeaniven Sophia doubled.

Twins immediately took more distance with a 6-run rally in the second inning. Sheila van der Tang led off with a walk and scored on an one-out triple by Manon van Alebeek. Next, Sophie Bugter added a runscoring single, which led to a pitching change. Moments later, Sandy Lauwers homered to make it 7-2. Michelle Edgtton then walked and Minke Blok singled, followed by an RBI-single by Kate Geldof and runscoring double steal-situation.

Ban-Topa was able to score a run in the third when Emily Stenzler led off with a single and scored in a fielder's choice-situation. Hereafter, the Amsterdam-squad was silenced by Michelle Edgtton, while Twins also turned a double play in the fifth at bat.

Twins added two more runs in the seventh. Sophie Bugter led off with a double and scored when an outfield-error followed. Hereafter, Sandy Lauwers belted her second homerun in the game.

Ban-Topa scored its last runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Samayra Staal then singled with one out and scored on a double by Emily Stenzler. The latter then scored on a sac-fly by Lee Ann Craanberg.

Game 2

In the second game, the roles were reversed. Initially, Twins again took the lead, scoring twice in the fourth inning. But then, Ban-Topa rallied for eight runs in the home half of the at bat and went on to end the game via the mercy-rule in the next inning.

Both teams left a runner in scoring position in then first three innings, but the scoring began in the fourth at bat.

In the top of the fourth, Twins opened the score. Michelle Edgtton led off with a single, stole second base, then scored on an one-out double by Minke Blok. The latter then scored on a hit by Tammie Lijbers, which was missed in the outfield.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ban-Topa struck with eight runs. Jeannevian Kinburn led off with an infield-hit. Hereafter, no outs were made on force play-grounders by Jeaniven Sophia and Ylaine van de Hove. A walk for Shirley Jacobs then brought in the first run, then the score was tied when Nadine van Roode singled. An error gave Ban-Topa a 3-2 lead, then a single by Samayra Staal and passed ball accounted for the next two runs. With two outs and runners on first and third base, Jeannevian homered to make it 8-2.

After Ban-Topa turned a double play in the top of the fifth inning, it reached the 7-run difference moments later. Nadine van Roode then scored on a basesloaded, 2-out, walk-off single by Emily Stenzler.
