Amsterdam Pirates wins first two games of season
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - Amsterdam Pirates won its first two games of the season on Saturday (May 2) by winning twice vs. Onze Gezellen.

Pirates won 10-9 in eight innings in the opener, which was a game with a very special story as it had a weird ending. During a steal-attempt, one of the Onze Gezellen-players injured herself and was unable to continue. At that moment, the team had used all its players. To avoid the game being ended for having not enough players, an injured player was inserted, who then completed the game. Beneath, more in the recap of this game in which Shannon Hetem homered twice.

In the second game, Amsterdam won 14-8.

It was a long day at the field, as the opener lasted more than 2 1/2 hours, while the second game took just over two hours to complete.

(May 2)

Game 1

The first game had a peculiar line score, but also a very special ending. Both teams showed a lot of character in this game. Onze Gezellen for completing the game with an injured player. Amsterdam Pirates for coming back three times from a deficit and finally winning its first game after an 8-inning marathon of two hours and 35 minutes.

Onze Gezellen led 5-0 after four innings and appeared to be en route to a victory, but then Amsterdam rallied for six runs. A suspenseful, exciting and yes, also emotional three more innings were left.

But let's start with the beginning. Both teams got into scoring position in the first two innings, but were unable to score. Onze Gezellen stranded runners on second and third base in the first inning, then another one in the second. Pirates also got runners on second and third base in its first at bat.

Onze Gezellen then rallied for four runs in the third inning. Ardine Schemmekes led off with a walk, then Shannon Hetem reached on an infield-hit. Both scored when Babs de Jonge followed with a 3-run homerun! Next, Laura van der Bos singled and scored the next run on a double by Amy Udink to make it 4-0.

The Haarlem-squad added a run in the fourth when Patricia Hesterman led off with a walk and scored on a sac-fly by Babs de Jonge.

Trailing 5-0, Pirates struck with six runs in the fifth inning when OG committed four errors. Josephine Rommens led off with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch, then scored when an outfield-error followed on a single by Ragna Stegenga. Hereafter, the same happened when Rhowan Stuart singled and she later scored herself on another error. Judith Diepeveen and Sophie van Oostvoorn followed with singles, which led to a pitching change. With two outs, the two scored on a single by Shanna van Vegten to tie the score. A single by Sara Elamir then gave Pirates a 6-5 lead.

Onze Gezellen re-took the lead in the sixth inning. Shannon Hetem led off with an inside-the-park-homerun to make it a 6-6 score. With one out, Laura van der Bos was hit by a pitch, then scored on a double by Amy Udink, which gave OG a 7-6 lead.

But the game was far from over!

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Amsterdam tied the score again. Lead-off hitter Ragna Stegenga reached second base on an error, then scored on a following single by Rhowan Stuart.

In the top of the seventh inning, Amsterdam-pitcher Mandy van der Maas, who had taken over in the previous at bat, got two quick outs. She then gave up a single to Ardine Schemmekes, who then took off moments later to steal second base. There, she was tagged out, but also injured herself and had to leave the game. She even went to the hospital for a check-up. That led to a problem, as Onze Gezellen had used all of its players. In case, Schemmekes wasn't replaced by another player, the game would have ended in an automatic win for Amsterdam, as Onze Gezellen would have had not enough players to continue the game. There was only one option left. Onze Gezellen had one player listed, Demi Aussems, but she also was injured and even needed crutches. However, to avoid the 'not-enough-players-loss', it was decided to insert Aussems (of course without crutches) into the outfield, which led to more changes, as Ardine Schemmekes was the catcher. At the hospital, luckily, no fractures were diagnosed, but as her foot was too swollen, it will take some more days to see whether there is other damage.

Pirates was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh and so the game went into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, the tie-break runner for Onze Gezellen (of course) was Schemmekes', and thus Aussems', spot......... And so, Aussems was assisted to second base. To avoid any hazardous situations, Aussems left the base 'too early'. And it almost all went the way of OG after all, as Shannon Hetem (who was 5-for-5) followed with her second homerun of the game! Babs de Jonge then reached on an error and advanced on a single by Laura van der Bos. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Amy Udink, then Daniëlle Gardeniers delivered a runscoring single that gave OG a 9-7 lead. Iris Dweelaard followed with a walk to load the bases, but three runners stranded.

Now trailing by two runs, Pirates also reached base again, while the Onze Gezellen-outfield of course had only two healthy players. Tie-break runner Sara Elamir moved to third base on a passed ball, then Josephine Rommens walked and stole second base. Rhowan Stuart (who was 4-for-5) then connected for a double to make it a 9-9 tie. Moments later, she scored the winning run on a walk-off single by Judith Diepeveen.

And so, one of the most remarkable games in softball-history ended!
