Carrousel & Joudrs open Mastenbroek Tournament with wins
Nederlands
ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - The 32nd edition of the annual J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament, organized by Tex Town Tigers in Enschede, went underway tonight (Friday, April 3) with two softball-games. The baseball-tournament of the event begins on Saturday-morning.

Tex Town Tigers organizes the event since 1982 when he held the first edition on its former site at Stadsveld-Noord. Since 1997, the tournament is played on the current site of the club, The Cottonfields.

The tournament is named after Johannes Christoffel Jan Mastenbroek (1902-1978), who was a huge stimulator for the development of baseball and softball in the city of Enschede. Johannes Mastenbroek, born in Dordrecht, was a school-teacher and in 1936 became the Chairman of the former Dutch East Indies Football Association (1936-1942) and Vice-President of the Dutch East Indies Olympic Committee. In those years, the Dutch East Indies was the former name of what is now Indonesia. While being Chairman of the Football Association, he also was the Head Coach of the Dutch East Indies Soccer Team, which in 1938 participated in the World Soccer Cup in France. In the First Round of that event, the Dutch East Indies lost its lone game 6-0 to Hungary and was eliminated. In 1955, Mr. Mastenbroek became Director for Sports & Recreation in the Municipality of Enschede. In that position, he introduced sports as badminton, basketball, baseball and softball, which led to the founding of two baseball-clubs in Enschede, De Ruimte and De Terriërs. These two clubs merged in 1968 to become Tex Town Tigers, the club of which Mastenbroek is a Honorary Member.

Tonight, the softball-tournament was opened with an international match-up, as Carrousel Moscow from Russia met Zürich Barracudas from Switzerland. Carrousel, which won the event last year, shutout Zürich 2-0.

In the second game tonight, host Tex Town Tigers against SK Joudrs Praha from the Czech Republic. Tex Town Tigers initially started well and took a 3-0 lead, but Joudrs then answered with a 7-run, 7-hit rally to win 7-3.

In the first inninng, Anastasia Zaitceva led off with a walk and stole second and third base. With one out, Aleksandra Larionova also walked and advanced on a fielder's choice, but then two outs followed.

Fedina is one of six players, who played tonight for Carrousel, who last year participated with the National Team of Russia in the World Championship in Haarlem (Netherlands). Of these players, Irina Ilyashenko participated in four international events last year. Besides the World Championship, she also participated in the European Championship U22 in Bulgaria and the European Championship Juniors in Rosmalen (Netherlands). Her fourth event was the European Premiere Cup in Italy, where she participated with Carrousel.

SK Joudrs Praha vs. Tex Town Tigers

After a scoreless first at bat, Tex Town Tigers opened the score in the second inning. Alana Westerhof led off with a triple down the rightfield-line, then scored when Romy van der Wielen reached on an error with two outs.

Tex Town Tigers increased its lead to 3-0 in the third inning and again Westerhof was involved. Annemiek Jansen and Laura Wissink began the inning with singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Isa Los. With two outs, they both scored when Alana Westerhof doubled. She tried to stretch that into a triple, but was thrown out at third base.

As pitcher, Westerhof retired the first six batters she faced. The righthanded Canadian struckout five of them, but then ran into problems in the bottom of the third inning when Joudrs turned the game around its way with a 7-run rally. Lead-off hitter Apolena Výborná first reached on an error, stole second base and scored when Kateřina Klimplová followed with a runscoring single. Hereafter, Veronika Klimplová also singled, Westerhof followed with a strikeout, but then Dina Pfeiferová reached on a bunt-single to load the bases and the Czechs came alongside when next batter Helena Novotná also singled. Moments later, Anna Lemberková also singled and as an outfield-error followed, two more runners scored to give Joudrs a 5-3 lead. The scoring wasn't over yet, as Denisa Podzimková also delivered a runscoring single. Next, Magda Polmanová walked and the bases got loaded when Apolena Výborná reached on the third error in this at bat. A following single by Kateřina Klimplová (her second in this inning) made it 7-3, before the inning ended when Westerhof struckout the next two batters.

In the top of the fourth inning, Cheyenne Scheffer singled with two outs for Tex Town Tigers and advanced on a passed ball. But she then stranded, leaving the Enschede-squad empty handed after a good start.

Three of the Joudrs-players last year participated with the National Team of the Czech Republic in the World Championship in Haarlem (Netherlands).
