German National Team vs. Zürich Barracudas

Zürich Barracudas began the third day of the tournament with a 4-0 shutout-win against the National Team of Germany. This was the first win for the Swiss team, which participated for the first time in the event and had lost its first three games. For the German squad, it was its third loss, after having begun the event with a tie. With this result, Germany ended in fifth place in Pool A, meaning it played for ninth and tenth place later in the day. Zürich took fourth place because of the win to qualify for the game for seventh and eighth place.

The first two innings remained scoreless, but both teams got runners in scoring position.

In the top of the first inning, Kimberly Zehnder walked with one out, but was forced out on a grounder by Stephanie Reid. The latter then stole second base, but was left behind. In the last two seasons, Stephanie Reid played for UVV in the Dutch big league. This weekend, she was a guest-player with Zürich, which also had listed Courtney Hiatt (who played for Terrasvogels last season) on its roster. However, Hiatt was in the States and was not able to travel. Later in the inning, Stephanie Reid decided the game in favor of the Swiss team.

For Germany, Maaike Ogink and Alexandra Stüwe both singled with two outs in the first inning, then stranded on second and third base.

In the second inning, Zürich left a runner on second base, then scored two runs in the third inning off starter Hannah Held. With one out, Nina Wolfensberger and Kimberly Zehnder singled, then scored on a following triple by Stephanie Reid.

In the fifth, off of new pitcher Claudia Volkmann, Kimberly Zehnder led off with a triple and this time, Stephanie Reid homered to make it 4-0.

After Zürich had taken a 2-0 lead, pitcher Victoria Shepard retired nine of the next ten batters she faced. The lone German player to reach base was Katharina Szalay, who singled with two outs in the third, but then the next seven batters were retired in a row.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. Terrasvogels (Final)

The championship-game of the tournament between Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels was tied at 1-1 after three innings. Sparks Haarlem then rallied for four runs in the fourth inning to win 5-1.

In the last two years (and in many other seasons), these two teams faced each other in the best-of-five Holland Series. The games in those Series always brought something extra and were very well visited. In 2013, the Series had to go all the way and it was Terrasvogels which then captured the Dutch championship-title in an exciting fifth game to close a very emotional year. A true promotional series for Dutch softball. Last year, Sparks Haarlem dominated the entire season and remaind unbeaten. But that streak was almost broken in the third game of the Series. In the end, Sparks Haarlem won that game only 1-0 to become Dutch champion.

And that's what makes a Series of games interesting, as everything can happen!

In tournaments, there is simply no time for a Series, so there is only one championship-game. But Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels brought their rich history and rivalry against each other into this game. Sparks Haarlem took the lead and Terrasvogels came alongside. In the fourth, the reigning champion decided the game.

Terrasvogels threatened to open the score in the first inning when Jessie van Aalst and Marisèla de Wind singled with two outs off of starter Dagmar Bloeming, but a grounder ended the at bat.

Sparks Haarlem then scored the first run in the bottom of the first at bat. With one out, Anne Blaauwgeers doubled and advanced on a wild pitch. She then scored when Areke Spel followed with a sacrifice fly.

Terrasvogels answered with the tying run in the top of the second. Lizzie Clarijs led off with a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jeske Meewisse. Next, Ginger de Weert was inserted as pinch-hitter for Malou van Dusschoten and delivered a runscoring single that brought in Clarijs with the tying run.

Sparks Haarlem was then retired in order in the bottom of the second, but Terrasvogels got another runner in the top of the third. Jessie van Aalst singled with one out and stole second base, but was left behind.

Sparks Haarlem got its next baserunner in the bottom of the third, when Chantal Versluis reached on a bunt-single and moved on a sac-bunt by Anne Blaauwgeers. But she also was left behind.

In the top of the fourth, Kirsten Scheele took over the pitching for Sparks Haarlem and gave up a lead-off single to Lizzie Clarijs. But hereafter, two forceouts followed and a strikeout ended the inning.

Sparks Haarlem then struck in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs. Karin Tuk and Virginie Anneveld led off with singles and moved on a sac-bunt by Nathalie Gosewehr. They then scored when Maxime van Dalen followed with a double to give Sparks Haarlem a 3-1 lead. Next, Manoa Weijgertse added an RBI-single, which led to a pitching change. Ginger de Weert took over, but gave up a single to Kiki Draaijer. The two runners then advanced on a grounder by Chantal Versluis and an extra run was scored when Anne Blaauwgeers singled.

Trailing 5-1, Terrasvogels attempted a final comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Jessie van Aalst singled and Marisèla de Wind reached on an error, but then a grounder ended the game.
