Mercy-rule & One-run win Olympia Haarlem vs. DSS
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won twice vs. DSS on Saturday (May 16), but the two games were much different from each other.

There was some drizzling rain until an half hour before game time, but in the end, the opener started on time and both games could be played under acceptable conditions.

In the opener, Olympia Haarlem won 12-0 in 3 1/2 inning via the mercy-rule in a game that lasted just over an hour.

In the second game, there was a narrow escape, as Olympia won only 2-1, while DSS had the tying run on third base in the seventh inning.

In today's double-header, American player Stephanie Tofft made her debut in an Olympia-uniform. Last year, she played in her Senior-season for the Gators, the Division I softball-team of the University of Florida. That was a very successful season, as for the first time in school-history, the team won the national championship. In the final of the Women's College World Series, Florida shutout Alabama 5-0. 2014 was her second season with Florida and she played in 67 games, starting all of them at third base. Tofft batted .356 with 68 basehits (including 11 homeruns) and batted in 65 runs. In her 4-year college-career, Tofft was a utility player, who also saw action in the outfield and as catcher, but mostly played in the infield. In her first two seasons, she played for the Huskies, the team of Northern Illinois University.

Game 1

In the first game, Olympia-pitcher Eva Voortman encountered no problems. The lefthander struckout seven batters and gave up only two basehits.

In the second and third inning, she allowed only one batter to reach first base, then saw DSS get close to a run in the fourth. With one out, Denice van Dijk singled and stole second base, then Annemiek de Rover was hit by a pitch for the second time in this game. The latter was then forced out on a grounder by Quincey Catsburg, but that brought Van Dijk to third base. Voortman then kept her shutout intact by ending the inning and the game with her seventh strikeout.

Olympia Haarlem struck with five runs in the first at bat. Lead-off hitter Eva Voortman reached on an error, stole second base, moved on a sac-bunt by Dinet Oosting, then scored the first run on a passed ball. Next, Stephanie Tofft (who played at second base) walked in her first big league at bat. She then advanced on a single by Mariëlle Vleugels and scored on a single by Stephanie Ruiter. Moments later, Vleugels and Ruiter scored on a triple into deep right-centerfield by Rachel van Veen, who then scored herself on a following double by Brenda Beers.

After a scorless second inning, Olympia rallied for seven runs in the third at bat on five basehits. The bases got loaded when Stephanie Ruiter and Rachel van Veen singled and Brenda Beers was hit by a pitch. The bases were cleared when Maranca Ham followed with a 3-run double. With one out, Eva Voortman added an RBI-triple. An error and a 2-run double by Mariëlle Vleugels then lifted the lead to 12-0.

Game 2

The second game was much closer than the opener.

Stephanie Tofft made her pitching debut for Olympia Haarlem, was supported with two double plays and saw DSS leave a runner on third base twice. In the seventh at bat, she gave up the lone run of DSS, which had the tying run at third base when the game ended.

Olympia Haarlem was unable to take more distance off of Svenja de Lincel, who pitched a fine game and gave up only four basehits.

In the first inning, Olympia got runners on base when Dinet Oosting was hit by a pitch and Stephanie Tofft walked. A flyout on foul territory enabled Oosting to reach third base, but she then stranded.

Olympia then scored two unearned runs in the third inning. With one out, Eva Voorman walked and Dinet Oosting reached on a fielder's choice. Next, Stephanie Tofft placed a nice bunt-single in front of the catcher, which moved the runners. The ball was picked up and thrown to third base, as Voortman had overran it. A good throw would have led to an out there, but the throw went errant enabling both Voortman and Oosting to score. With Tofft on second base, Mariëlle Vleugels was walked intentionally, but then two outs followed.

In the following three innings, Olympia stranded two runners on second base and was unable to add more runs.

In the top of the seventh inning, Morgan Sampson led off with a single (she had tripled in the fourth, but then stranded). Stephanie Tofft followed with a strikeout, but then Annemiek de Rover was hit by a pitch (her third time this afternoon). Another strikeout followed, but Eva Halman followed with a single that enable Sampson to score and brought pinch-runner Melissa de Greef (who took over for De Rover) to third base. With the tying run at third base, the inning and the game ended with a pop-fly.
