HCAW opens season with two victories vs. Almere
Nederlands
ALMERE (Neth.) - After its first two games rained out a week earlier, HCAW opened the new season on Saturday (April 18) with two victories at Almere '90.

The Bussum-squad won both games via the mercy-rule, winning 12-4 in five and 8-1 in six innings.

Almere has now lost four games in a row after having lost its opening double-header a week ago against Onze Gezellen.

For HCAW, these were the first games they played, as its first double-header rained out a week ago.

Before the first game, there was an Opening Ceremony to open the home season. This also included the men softball-teams of Almere '90 and Domstad Dodgers.

(April 18)

Game 1

The score was tied at 4-4 after two innings, but then HCAW took more distance from the third inning and went on to end the game via the mercy-rule.

In the top of the first inning, HCAW rallied for four runs. Dervisa Mutic and Laura van Essen led off with singles, then the bases got loaded when Ilona Marcelis also singled with one out. Hereafter, Marley Martis also singled, bringing two runs. The bases were re-loaded when Milot van Doesburg walked and then Anouk Sassen batted in two runs with a single. Two force play-grounders (one resulting in an out) then loaded the bases again, but this time, three runners were left behind.

Almere '90 came alongside in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four unearned runs. With two outs and Maxime Scheffer (fielder's choice) on base, Kelsy Pieneman walked, then both scored when a fly by Shanna de Vrede was missed in the outfield. Following singles by Britt Remmers and Renée Adriaanse then made it 4-4.

HCAW re-took the lead in the third inning. With one out, HCAW loaded the bases again when Anouk Sassen and Lindsay Gase walked and Kaylee Fortilus singled in between. This led to a pitching change. Shanna te Vrede took over and began with a strikeout, but then gave up a 2-run single to Laura van Essen that made it 6-4.

A 5-run rally followed in the fourth on five hits, including runscoring singles by Anouk Sassen (2-run), Lindsay Gase and Dervisa Mutic. An overthrow accounted for the fifth run.

HCAW then made it 12-4 in the fifth on a single by Anouk Sassen.

In the bottom of the fifth, Suzanne Poelgeest and Stacy Groot led off with singles for Almere, but were left on second and third base. Hereafter, the game ended as a 7-run difference had been reached.

Game 2

In the second game, HCAW led only 3-1 after five innings, but then rallied for five runs in the sixth at bat to also end the game via the mercy-rule.

HCAW collected only four basehits off of Shanna te Vrede, who last season played for the Bussum-squad. Besides giving up four hits, Te Vrede walked nine batters.

HCAW scored twice in the first at bat. Dervisa Mutic (walk) and Kaylee Fortilus (single) then respectively scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Laura van Essen.

Almere got one run back in the second inning. Shanna te Vrede then walked with one out and scored when Shawna van der Schouw followed with a triple, but then was left behind herself.

HCAW added an unearned run in the third when Fortilus walked and later scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Te Vrede tripled, but stranded. In the remainder of the game, only one more batter of Almere would reach base.

HCAW then rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth. Marley Martis, Milot van Doesburg and Yaelle van Blanken all walked. The lead runner then scored, beating the throw to home on a grounder by Lindsay Gase. A 2-run single by Dervisa Mutic followed leading to a pitching change. The bases were re-loaded when Fortilus walked, then Laura van Essen delivered a 2-run single to make it 8-1.
