Twins wins twice vs. Gryphons; Sandy Lauwers hits grand slam!
Nederlands
ROSMALEN (Neth.) - Twins registered its third and fourth victory of the season by winning 11-2 and 6-5 vs. Gryphons on Saturday (April 18).

In the opener, Twins decided the game via the mercy-rule, ending it after five innings. The game was highlighted by a grand slam homerun by Sandy Lauwers, while Michelle Edgtton threw a 2-hitter.

Game 2 offered much more suspense, as it was decided in the eighth inning. After the lead changed frequently, Twins scored the tying run with two outs in the seventh inning and then scored the winning run in the eighth. Edgtton pitched the final two innings to win her third game of the season.

For Gryphons, these were their first games of the season after its first double-header had rained out a week earlier.

(April 18)

Game 1

Twins broke an 1-1 tie in the second inning by scoring five runs, highlighted by a grand slam homerun by Sandy Lauwers, and went on to win big, 11-2.

Both teams scored once in the opening at bat. For Twins, Manon van Alebeek singled with one out and moved to third base on two wild pitches. The bases were loaded when Lieke Duffhues and Sandy Lauwers both walked. A sacrifice fly by Kelly De Lannoy then gave Twins the lead, but the team also stranded two runners.

In the home half of the first at bat, Gryphons came alongside immediately. With one out, Judith van Ekeren and Maureen van Poorten both reached on errors, resulting in the tying run. With two outs, Charlotte Drijvers singled, but then the third out followed. The single was one of only two basehits allowed by Australian pitcher Michelle Edgtton. In the fifth, she gave up a lead-off single to Linda Hanegraaf, who went on to score the second run for Gryphons on an error. But when that run was scored, Gryphons already trailed 11-1.

Twins broke the 1-1 tie by scoring five runs in the second at bat. Michelle Edgtton led off with a single and moved on a wild pitch, then scored on an one-out single by Tammie Lijbers. The latter then moved on a passed ball and a single by Femke Duffhues, but then was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder by Manon van Alebeek. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Lieke Duffhues walked and that set the scene for next batter Sandy Lauwers. The veteran Belgian player connected well and hit a grand slam homerun to give Twins a 6-1 lead!

One run was added in the third when Michelle Edgtton led off with a double and scored on an error, but Twins also left the bases loaded. Another run followed in the fourth. With one out, Minke Blok reached on an error and scored on a passed ball.

Twins scored three more runs in the fifth on runscoring singles by Shauni Thys and Lieke Duffhues plus a basesloaded force play-grounder by Michelle Edgtton, which didn't result in an out.

Gryphons then added its second run in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't avoid that the game ended with the mercy-rule.

Game 2

In the second game, Twins trailed 3-2 after four innings, then took a 4-3 lead, but faced a 5-4 deficit when the seventh inning began. Twins then came alongside to force extra innings and went on to win 6-5 in eight innings.

Twins opened with two runs in the first at bat off of Emma Holden, who gave up five unearned runs in this game. With one out in the first, Manon van Alebeek singled, then Lieke Duffhues walked. A following grounder by Sandy Lauwers ended in two errors, a run, an out at the plate and a runner on third base. Next, Kelly De Lannoy walked. When the latter stole second base, Lauwers went on to score the second run.

Gryphons got one run back in the second inning. Charlotte Drijvers led off with a single, moved on two grounders, then scored on a double by Carlinde Altorf, who herself was eliminated at third trying to stretch her hit into a triple.

In the third, Gryphons scored twice to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, Kehli Washington tripled, then scored the tying run on a single by Judith van Ekeren. Maureen van Poorten then walked and a pitching change followed. After an infield-fly, the bases got loaded when Charlotte Drijvers walked, then a passed ball gave Gryphons a 3-2 lead, but two runners were left behind in scoring position.

Twins had left two runners in both the third and fourth inning, but then scored twice in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Manon van Alebeek reached on an error, moved on a sac-bunt by Lieke Duffhues and a single by Sandy Lauwers, then scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Moments later, Kelly De Lannoy walked and Lauwers scored the go-ahead run on a 2-out single by Michelle Edgtton. A walk for Shauni Thys loaded the bases, but the three runners stranded as Emma Holden closed the at bat with a strikeout.

Now trailing 4-3, it was Gryphons that scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead again. Kehli Washington led off with a bunt-single and went on to score the tying run (again) on an one-out single by Maureen van Poorten. With two outs, the latter scored on a single by Manya Krijgsman to give Gryphons a 5-4 lead.

From the fifth inning on, Emma Holden retired six batters in a row (including four strikeouts) and was one out away from the win in the top of the seventh inning. She then gave up an infield-hit to Minke Blok, followed by a triple by Michelle Edgtton that made it a 5-5 score.

As Gryphons was held scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, the game went into extra innings.

In the first tie-break inning, pinch-runner Noor Godefroy advanced to third base on a sac-bunt by Tammie Lijbers. She then scored on a grounder by Femke Duffhues to give Twins a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, tie-break runner Maureen van Poorten advanced on a grounder, then was eliminated on a grounder by Charlotte Drijvers. The latter moved to second base on the play, then Manya Krijgsman was walked intentionally. Julia van Oosterwijck's grounder then ended in an error, but also in the third out, ending this suspenseful game.
