Olympia Haarlem outscores Tex Town Tigers
Nederlands
ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won twice on Saturday (April 18) at Tex Town Tigers, which made its comeback on the highest level. Olympia Haarlem won 8-1 and 9-5.

In the first game, leading 1-0, Olympia Haarlem decided the game in the fourth inning with a 5-run rally, then added two runs to end the game in six innings via the 7-run difference mercy-rule.

In the next game, leading 2-1, Olympia took more distance from the third inning on, but it was Tex Town Tigers' Alana Westerhof, who accounted for the first homerun of the new season in the Dutch big league.

New Zealander Stanley Doney made his coaching debut in the Dutch big league, as this season he is the Head Coach of Olympia Haarlem, which was led by American Caroline Powell in the previous five seasons.

In the opener, Olympia Haarlem appeared to open the score right away in the first inning off of Romy van der Wielen. Eva Voortman and Merel Oosterveld (bunt) began with singles. But then, a double steal failed, as Voortman was caught stealing at third base. A grounder brought Oosterveld to third, then Mariëlle Vleugels walked, but both stranded.

After leaving another runner on third base in the second, Olympia Haarlem opened the score with one run in the third at bat. With one out Merel Oosterveld singled and scored on a 2-out single by Mariëlle Vleugels.

Olympia then decided the game with a 5-run rally in the fourth inning. Stephanie Ruiter led off with a double, moved when Rachel van Veen reached on an error, then scored on a single by Desiree Adriaansz. The bases then got loaded when Brenda Beers walked. Van Veen, Adriaansz and Beers are the newcomers in the team. They all played for Alcmaria Victrix last season. With the bases loaded, two force outs at home followed, but then three runs were scored when Dinet Oosting delivered a 3-run double. A single by Mariëlle Vleugels accounted for the next run to lift the lead to 6-0.

Tex Town Tigers then scored its lone run in this game in the fifth inning off of new pitcher Mariëlle Vleugels, who came to Haarlem from Gryphons. Rookie Daniëlle ten Donkelaar led off with a triple, then scored on a fielder's choice-grounder by Nadine Marinus, the veteran player in the Enschede-squad.

Olympia Haarlem reached the 7-run difference in the top of the sixth inning. Brenda Beers and Eva Voortman began with singles, then executed a double steal. A sacrifice bunt by Merel Oosterveld and error on a grounder by Dinet Oosting then made it 8-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, TTT came close to erase the 7-run difference, as it got the bases loaded. Monique Mooi led off with a single and Alana Westerhof doubled. With one out, Lindsey Meadows was walked intentionally to load the bases and set up a force play. The force was not needed, as Mariëlle Vleugels struckout the next two batters to end the game.

Game 2

Olympia Haarlem opened the score in the second game with two runs in the second at bat with two outs. Mariëlle Vleugels led off with a double, then scored on a 2-out double by Rachel van Veen. A single by Desiree Adriaansz then brought Van Veen to third base and she went on to score on a wild pitch.

Tex Town Tigers immediately got a run back in the bottom of the second inning when Alana Westerhof led off with a homerun off of Eva Voortman, who also started the first game.

Hereafter, Olympia Haarlem started to take more distance, adding runs in almost all of the next innings.

In the third, Dinet Oosting doubled with one out and scored on a single by Mariëlle Vleugels.

In the fourth, two runs were scored. With one out, Brenda Beers singled and stole second base, then scored on a single by Eva Voortman. The latter then stole third base and scored on a following throwing error.

With a 5-1 lead, a 4-run rally followed in the sixth inning off of Lindsey Meadows, who had pitched for Olympia in the previous two seasons and now took over the pitching for starter Alana Westerhof. Meadows played for Tex Town Tigers in 2005-2010, winning the Dutch championship twice with the team. She then played in Italy in 2011 and 2012, but also pitched in a few games for TTT during those seasons. After last season, she returned to Tex Town Tigers, but initially only was to be the team's Pitching Coach this season.

In the sixth, lead-off hitter Judith Buschman reached on an error, then Rachel van Veen singled. Hereafter, Lindsey Meadows followed with a strikeout, which was her 1200th in the Dutch big league. After a double steal, Brenda Beers singled in a run. A single by Eva Voortman, grounder by Merel Oosterveld and single by Dinet Oosting then increased the lead to 9-1.

In the last two innings, Tex Town Tigers narrowed the deficit to 9-5 by scoring twice in each of the at bats, but was unable to turn the game around.

In the sixth, with Isa Los (fielder's choice) on first base and out out, Lindsey Meadows reached on an error, but that also led to Los being eliminated at third base. Next, pinch-hitter Daniëlle ten Donkelaar delivered an RBI-double, then scored herself on a following pinch-hit double by Cheyenne Scheffer.

In the seventh, Annemiek Jansen led off with a single, then Laura Wissink reached on an error. Singles by Alana Westerhof and Lindsey Meadows then brought in the runs, but a strikeout then ended the game.
