Sparks Haarlem No-Hits Alcmaria Victrix twice
Nederlands
ALKMAAR (Neth.) - League-leader Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem not only registered two big shutouts on Saturday (May 23) at Alcmaria Victrix, it also held the Alkmaar-squad hitless in both games. The two games both lasted only three innings due to the 15-run difference mercy-rule.

Sparks Haarlem today scored 38 runs, including six by Chantal Versluis. 29 basehits were registered, including five by Cindy van der Zanden. There were 34 runs batted in, seven of them by Areke Spel, who hit a grand slam homerun. She also had homered in last Thursday's game against Terrasvogels.

Kirsten Scheele and Dagmar Bloeming both threw a No-Hitter.

(May 23)

Game 1

In the first game, all nine players in the batting order of Sparks Haarlem scored at least once and hit at least one basehit. Eight of them also had at least one run batted in. Seven players scored at least twice and seven also hit at least two hits.

The tone was set for today's double-header when Sparks Haarlem rallied for 11 runs in the first inning. Last season, on Opening Day, Sparks Haarlem scored eleven runs in the fifth inning of a 21-1 victory against Gryphons. In 2013, Sparks Haarlem had two 20-plus run games. It shutout Olympia Haarlem 23-0 and defeated Terrasvogels 27-0. In that last game, 13 runs were scored in the fourth inning. However, at the end of the season, it was Terrasvogels that captured the championship-title!

In today's first inning, eight basehits were registered and only four runs were earned. It all began when Chantal Versluis reached on an error. She then (of course) stole second base, advanced on a wild pitch and scored the first run on a single by Nathalie Gosewehr. Next, Maxime van Dalen also reached on an error, then Karin Tuk walked to load the bases. Hereafter, Areke Spel connected well and drilled the ball over the leftfield-fence for a grand slam homerun that made it a 5-0 score. Later in the inning, she also added a runscoring single. Cindy van der Zanden and Nathalie Gosewehr also singled in runs, while Chantal Versluis and Maxime van Dalen added RBI-doubles. Another run was scored on an error. With a runner on second base and trailing 11-0, pitcher Katherine Chavarria ended the inning with a strikeout.

Five runs were added in the second inning. Nathalie Gosewehr singled in two runs, then Karin Tuk later added a 2-run double and scored herself on a single by Anne Blaauwgeers.

Sparks Haarlem then crossed the 20-plus mark by scoring seven more runs in the third on six hits, including a runscoring singles by Maxime van Dalen and Anne Blaauwgeers and 2-run singles by Areke Spel and Manoa Weijgertse.

For Alcmaria Victrix, Alyssa Dronenburg walked with two outs in the first inning, but was left behind. The team then got close to a run in the third at bat. Nienke Verhofstad led off with a walk, then Katy Moore walked with one out. The two advanced to second and third base on a grounder, but then a flyout ended the inning and the game.

Game 2

In the second game, Sparks Haarlem not only was held scoreless in the first inning, it was even retired in order! But in the second inning, the scoring started again, this time just six runs.

Karin Tuk led off the second at bat with a single, then Maxime van Dalen walked with one out, but was forced out on a grounder. With two outs, the first run was scored on a single by Cindy van der Zanden. Hereafter, Kiki Draaijer added an RBI-single, as did Chantal Versluis. A double by Anne Blaauwgeers and a 2-run error then made it a 6-0 score.

A 9-run rally followed in the third inning to reach the 15-run difference. This rally was opened with a runscoring single by Cindy van der Zanden. Kiki Draaijer then added a runscoring double and that was followed by a 2-run single by Anne Blaauwgeers. Also, Virginie Anneveld had a basesloaded walk and two runs were scored on a sacrifice fly by, while two more on an error.

In this game, Alcmaria Victrix reached base only twice. In the second inning, Dagmar Bloeming walked Shantae Duren, but she was forced out on a grounder by Quita Borst, who with that became the second and last runner.
