DSS stunts after loss vs. Terrasvogels
Nederlands
SANTPOORT-ZUID (Neth.) - What makes softball (and baseball) so wonderful is that you can never predict a game. You can say beforehand that one of the two teams has a good chance to win and probably will win, but the outcome can be very different and surprising. That's makes a series so interesting. Especially, deciding series like the Play-Offs and Holland Series, as the losing team of the opening game always gets another chance of turning the series its way. Therefore, it's called a 'best-of-'series.

A week ago, DSS-pitcher Quincey Catsburg had a rough outing against FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem and lost in a mercy-rule game. Today, she had a great outing in the second game against Terrasvogels. She was supported with only one run in the first inning, but the Haarlem-squad hold onto the lead and stunted with an 1-0 win. And it was a historic win, as you can read below.

In the first game, Terrasvogels won, 4-0.

(May 23)

Game 1

In the first game, Terrasvogels stranded two runners in the second inning, but then opened the score by scoring three runs in the third at bat. Lead-off hitter Kimberly Jones was hit on her elbow-joint, then advanced when Ella Krommendijk reached on an error. As Jones was bothered by her elbow, she was replaced out of precaution by pinch-runner Anna-Bè Bartels. After the game, her elbow was still somewhat numb, but there was no big injury. The two runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jessie van Aalst, then both scored when Marisèla de Wind followed with a double. Hereafter, Lizzie Clarijs singled to bring De Wind to third base, who then scored the next run on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Myrthe Smid.

Terrasvogels added its fourth run in the fifth inning. Marisèla de Wind led off with a nice bunt-single, then advanced on a grounder by Lizzie Clarijs and a single by Myrthe Smid. A single by Jeske Meewisse down the leftfield-line then accounted for the run. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Jessica Waasdorp walked, but the three runners stranded when a pop-fly ended the inning.

Terrasvogels-pitcher Ginger de Weert held DSS hitless in the first three innings and was supported with a double play in the first at bat.

In the fourth inning, Denice van Dijk led off with the first hit for DSS, but later was ruled out for leaving first base too early.

DSS got into scoring position in the fifth. Kelly Koeman led off with a walk and Eva Halman singled, then the two moved a base on a grounder, but hereafter, De Weert ended the inning with a strikeout.

In the sixth inning, Ginger de Weert struckout the side, to give her twelve strikeouts in this game. She then also retired the side in the seventh to register a shutout-victory.

Game 2

The second game was an interesting pitching duel between Malou van Dusschoten (Terrasvogels) and Quincey Catsburg (DSS). Van Dusschoten struckout nine batters, Catsburg eleven. Catsburg finished six of her seven innings with a strikeout, three of which with runners in scoring position.

Terrasvogels outhit DSS 4-3, but it was DSS that scored the lone run in this game and that happened in the first at bat. Denice van Dijk led off the game with a single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Annemiek de Rover and a grounder by Morgan Sampson, then scored when Kelly Koeman followed with a single.

In the remainder of the game, DSS got into scoring position only one more time! In the fourth inning, Morgan Sampson led off with a single and moved to second base on a sac-bunt by Kelly Koeman, but stranded. In the final three at bats, only one more batter reached base, which was when Annemiek de Rover was hit by a pitch with one out in the sixth, but Terrasvogels then turned a double play.

Terrasvogels got many more scoring opportunities, but simply was unable to score.

After stranding a runner on first base in the second inning, Terrasvogels appeared to turn the game its way when it got the bases loaded in the third inning. With one out, Anna-Bè Bartels and Marisèla de Wind singled, then the two advanced on a passed ball. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Jessie van Aalst walked, but then Quincey Catsburg ended the threat with a strikeout.

In the fourth, there was a crucial moment. With one out, Jeske Meewisse tripled, but then was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder towards short by Ginger de Weert.

In the fifth, the home team again stranded two runners. With one out, Marisèla de Wind singled and stole second base, then moved to third base on a wild pitch with two outs. Hereafter, Jessie van Aalst was walked intentionally and moved on a fielder's indifference, but again, a strikeout ended the inning.

In the sixth, Myrthe Smid was running on third base for Terrasvogels with two outs, but then Quincey Catsburg end her sixth consecutive inning with a strikeout.

In the seventh, the minimal lead was threatened for the last time. Catsburg got two quick outs, but then an error followed on a grounder by Ella Krommendijk. But hereafter, a grounder followed to end the game, resulting in an 1-0 victory for DSS.

The win can be labeled as historic, as it is the first victory by DSS against Terrasvogels since June 16, 1984! The location on that day was the same, as was the score, as DSS also won with a 1-0 score 31 years ago. In the 1985 season, Terrasvogels defeated DSS, which then relegated from the big league. It then returned to the highest division in 2010 after promotion in the previous season. In 2010, Terrasvogels won all four games against DSS, which then again relegated. In 2014, DSS made another comeback, but then was shutout by Terrasvogels in four games. This season, Terrasvogels won the first three games against the Haarlem-team, before losing 1-0 in this game.
