HCAW hands Ban-Topa first losses to remain unbeaten
Nederlands
BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW won 2-1 and 7-5 against Ban-Topa Future Stars on Saturday (April 25) to remain unbeaten. Ban-Topa had won its first four games and suffered its first losses of the season.

In the opener, HCAW won in eight innings via a basesloaded hit by pitch.

Ban-Topa is coached this season by Lloyd Todman, who last season was the Head Coach of HCAW.

(April 25)

Game 1

In an exciting and suspenseful opening game, HCAW won 2-1 in eight inning to hand Ban-Topa Future Stars its first loss of the season.

In the first inning, HCAW took an 1-0 lead. With one out, Kaylee Fortilus singled and moved on a grounder by Laura van Essen. She then scored when Anouk Sassen followed with a single.

Ban-Topa came alongside in the second at bat. With one out, Ylaine van de Hove doubled and advanced to third base on a single by Nadine van Roode. After the latter moved to second base on a fielder's choice, the tying run was scored on a grounder by Kelly Platvoet, but the team then left a runner on third base.

In the next five innings, both teams got runners in scoring position, but were unable to score. For Ban-Topa, Lee Ann Craanberg led off the third inning with a triple, but stranded. In the fourth, the Amsterdam-squad left two runners. HCAW-pitcher Ilona Marcelis retired seven batters in a row from the fourth through sixth inning. She then gave up a lead-off double in the seventh to Kelly Platvoet, but her pinch-runner was caught stealing.

HCAW got the bases loaded in the third inning. With two outs, Kaylee Fortilus reached on an error, then Laura van Essen doubled. To set up a force play, Anouk Sassen was walked intentionally to load the bases, but then a flyout ended the inning.

After walking lead-off hitter Wendy Bierman in the fourth inning, Ban-Topa starter Nadine van Roode retired nine batters in a row.

In the seventh inning, Lee Ann Craanberg took over the pitching for Ban-Topa and saw HCAW get the bases loaded again. Pinch-hitter Odette Kuipers led off with a walk, then Ilona Marcelis reached on an error. With one out, a throwing error followed on a double steal, then Dervisa Mutic was walked intentionally to load the bases. A pop-fly and force out ended the inning, meaning the game went into extra innings.

For Ban-Topa, with Lee Ann Craanberg being the tie-break runner, Jeaniven Sophia walked with two outs, but the team left two runners behind.

In HCAW's eighth at bat, Laura van Essen was the tie-break runner. To set up a force play, Anouk Sassen walked intentionally (again). A single by Marley Martis then loaded the bases. Moments later, HCAW scored the winning run when next batter Wendy Bierman was hit by a pitch.

Game 2

In the second game, HCAW struck early and held a 5-0 lead after two innings.

HCAW scored four runs in the first at bat. Dervisa Mutic led off with a bunt-sngle, then Monique Melissant was hit by a pitch. Next, an error was made on a grounder by Laura van Essen, which led to the first run. Two force play-grounders followed, but only one of them resulted in an out. With the bases loaded, another force play-grounder led to a force out at home, but kept the bases loaded. The next run was then scored when Milot van Doesburg was hit by a pitch and Ilona Marcelis added a 2-run single to make it 4-0.

HCAW added its next run in the second inning. Dervisa Mutic walked and she scored when an error followed on a single by Laura van Essen.

HCAW made it 6-0 in the fourth thanks to a single by Marley Martis.

HCAW could have scored more runs in this inning to take a mercy-rule lead, but left the bases loaded, then gave up three runs in the fifth. With one out, Darlenes Martinez walked and Emily Stenzler reached on an infield-hit. An error on a grounder by Jeannevian Kinburn led to a run, as did a wild pitch. With two outs, a single by Shirley Jacobs narrowed the deficit to 6-3.

HCAW added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ilona Marcelis led off with her third basehit in the game. She advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Odette Kuipers and a grounder by Dervisa Mutic. A single by Monique Melissant then accounted for the run.

The suspense was building again when Ban-Topa scored twice in the top of the seventh inning. Emily Stenzler led off with a double and scored on a single by Jeannevian Kinburn. With one out, a single by Shirley Jacobs made it 7-5, but then a flyout followed. Hereafter, winning pitcher Anouk Sassen ended the game with a strikeout.
