(Story by Marco Stoovelaar) Onze Gezellen and Zwijndrecht split double-header Nederlands HAARLEM (Neth.) - Onze Gezellen and Zwijndrecht split their double-header on Saturday, April 25. With this result, the two teams now share seventh place in the Silver League. Zwijndrecht won the opener 9-4, then Onze Gezellen followed with a 3-0 shutout in the evening. Michelle van Bodegom homered for Zwijndrecht in the first game. (April 25)

Game 1 In the opener, Zwijndrecht struck early and was leading 8-0 after three innings, but the team was unable to finish the game through the mercy-rule. Trailing 9-0 in the fifth, Onze Gezellen scored three runs to avoid a mercy-rule loss. Zwijndrecht rallied for four runs in the opening at bat. Sanne Korpel led off with a walk, advanced on a grounder, then scored when Michelle van Bodegom homered. Claudia Kranendonk and Chantal Fehling then both also walked, advanced on a wild pitch and then scored on a following sngle by Nadine van der Loos. Three runs were added with two outs in the second inning. Denise Theulings led off with a walk, then moved on two grounders and scored on a single by Michelle van Bodegom. Next batter Claudia Kranendonk then reached on an error and a wild pitch and passed ball accounted for the next two runs. Zwijndrecht made it 8-0 in the third inning when Laura Zuidam scored on a single by Sanne Korpel. After being retired in order in the fourth, Zwijndrecht increased the lead to 9-0 in the fifth inning when Themis Claes reached on a bunt-single and scored on an error. But then, Onze Gezellen scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Shannon Hetem tripled, then a grounder followed. And so, Zwijndrecht was only one out away from ending the game through the mercy-rule. However, an error on a grounder by Babs de Jonge led to a run, as did a following single by Laura van der Bos. Onze Gezellen then avoided the mercy-rule loss when Amy Udink followed with an RBI-double to make it 9-3. The home team scored another run in the sixth when Daniëlle Gardeniers walked and scored on a single by Shannon Hetem. Now trailing 9-4, Onze Gezellen got the chance to add more runs, as it loaded the bases when Patricia Hesterman walked and, after a pitching change, Babs de Jonge singled. However, the inning ended when a force out at home and a flyout followed.

Game 2 In the second game, it was Onze Gezellen that controlled the game. Lisa Pagan went the distance, struckout six batters and gave up only four hits. Onze Gezellen opened the score in the first inning. Shannon Hetem led off with a single, moved on a grounder and a single by Babs de Jonge. Laura van der Bos followed with a runscoring double. The bases got loaded when Amy Udink walked, but then three runners were left behind. The second run was added in the third inning. With two outs, Laura van der Bos reached on an error, advanced on a single by Amy Udink and scored on a single by Fiona Sewalt. Onze Gezellen made it 3-0 in the fourth at bat. This time, Ardine Schemmekes led off with a walk and scored when Kayleigh van Emst reached on an error. Zwijndrecht got closest to a run in the third and fifth inning and that involved the same players. In the third, Sanne Korpel walked with one out, then Kelsey Huijzers moved her to third base with a single and stole second base herself. But they then were left in scoring position. In the fifth, again with two outs, Korpel reached on an error and Huijzers on an infield-hit, but they again stranded.
