Zwijndrecht defeats Centrals in 9-inning exhibition game
Nederlands
ZWIJNDRECHT (Neth.) - After having lost 10-0 by Twins the week before, Zwijndrecht won 14-8 vs. Centrals on Saturday, March 21. Initially, a double-header was scheduled, but due to the cold weather conditions, it was decided to play a long 9-inning game.

It became a game with a lot of basehits, as Zwijndrecht collected 18 and Centrals registered 11.
Zwijndrecht had 11 batters in its batting order and all of them hit at least one basehit, while ten of them scored at least once. Kelsey Huijzers hit three basehits for Zwijndrecht and also became the winning pitcher, while Claudia Kranendonk hit two doubles.
For Centrals, Laura Bakker led the offense by going 3-for-4.

Last season, Centrals played in the Dutch big league, but finished in last place and therefore automatically relegated to the new Silver League. Zwijndrecht on the other hand played in the First Division (third highest league), finished in first place and promoted to the Silver League.

After completion of the season, the team of Centrals remained intact. No players left and some new players were added. Short stop Cindy Zieremans came from Domstad Dodgers and outfielder Simone Meerkerk came from Quick Amersfoort. The team will be led again by Willy Juana, who will be assisted by Nigel van Elteren and Rob Korpel. The latter comes from Amsterdam Pirates, where he served as Assistant Coach in 2014 after having the Head Coach before that.

Returning to the team are Emma Wójcik and Stephanie Pearce. Wójcik has the Polish nationality and was born in Warsaw. Pearce is from London, has the British nationality and plays for the British National Team. Both also played for the University of Bridgeport in the USA, before making their debut last season with Centrals. Another player from the British squad, pitcher Carling Hare, also will play for Centrals this year.
Also coming to De Bilt are American players Cheyenne Bumpus (utility) and Sara Rosenbarker (infield). The two played together at The College at Brockport - State University of New York and already are in the Netherlands to be with the team they will play for this season, as is Emma Wójcik.
Besides these new additions, American pitcher Sara Moulton is also scheduled to play for Centrals, who will play for Chicago Bandits this season in the professional National Pro Fastpitch.

In the weekend of March 28-29, Zwijndrecht will have a trainingcamp in Apeldoorn at the site of Robur '58. There, the team will play against host Robur '58 and Caribe on Sunday.
Centrals participates in the weekend in the Midden-Nederland Cup in Hilversum.

At Zwijndrecht, Centrals opened the score in the first inning. Jasmin Carlson led off with a double, moved on a passed ball, then scored on an one-single by Laura Bakker. The latter advanced to second base when an outfield-error followed on a fly by Emma Wójcik. The two were moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Vivienne Schenk, but they were then left behind.

Zwijndrecht stranded three runners in the second inning. With one out, Claudia Kranendonk doubled, then Nadine van der Loos and Kyra van Genderen both walked with two outs. But a strikeout ended the at bat.

In the third inning, Zwijndrecht took a 3-1 lead off of Cheyenne Bumpus, who pitched the first four innings for Centrals. Denise Theulings led off with a double, then an errors on sacrifice bunts by Themis Claes and Dayenne Sluijter and another error on a grounder by Sanne Korpel led to the three runs. With the latter on first base, Kelsey Huijzers singled and Michelle van Bodegom reached on a bunt-single. But with the bases loaded, the Centrals-defense this time avoided giving up more runs by turning a double play and ending the at bat with a grounder.

Zwijndrecht then decided the game with a 6-run rally with two outs in the fourth at bat. Nadine van de Loos led off with a single and Kyra van Genderen walked, then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Laura Zuidam. With two outs, Themis Claes batted in two runs with a single, then Dayenne Sluijter walked. Hereafter, Sanne Korpel singled in the next run and could advance to third base after an outfield-error. Another outfield-error followed a single by Kelsey Huijzers, leading to the fifth run in the at bat. A double by Michelle van Bodegom completed the rally by bringing in the sixth run that lifted the lead to 9-1.

Centrals then was able to come back into the game, thanks to a 4-run rally in the fifth inning that narrowed the deficit to 9-5. In the previous inning, Centrals already got close to scoring. With one out and Laura Bakker (single) on third base and Emma Wójcik (single) on first base, a double-steal situation failed, as the first was eliminated at the plate. In the fifth, Centrals was more successful. Sara Rosenbarker led off with a single, then Franka van Dijk reached on an error. The bases got loaded when Ariana Tanja walked, then a passed ball led to a run. With one out, Van Dijk scored on a squeeze sacrifice bunt by Nina Ceulemans, followed by an RBI-single by Jasmin Carlson. Hereafter, Petya Sokolová and Laura Bakker also singled to bring in the next run, but then a flyout ended the inning.

Zwijndrecht added another run in the sixth inning when Themis Claes (fielder's choice) scored on a triple by Dayenne Sluijter.

In the seventh inning, Zwijndrecht had another productive at bat, this time scoring four runs. Michelle van Bodegom led off with a walk, then Claudia Kranendonk followed with her second double in the game. Two outs followed, but the two then scored when Kyra van Genderen and Laura Zuidam delivered runscoring singles. A double by Denise Theulings then produced the next run, while an error contributed to the 14th run for the home team.

Centrals had three more runs left in the ninth inning when the Zwijndrecht-defense committed two errors. With one out, Vivienne Schenk singled. With two outs, an error followed on a grounder by Sara Rosenbarker that led to a run. Hereafter, Franka van Dijk tripled and she went on to score on another error to make it a 14-8 score. And that also was the final score.
