UVV wins Keistad Tournament
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - The women-softballteam of UVV has won this years Keistad Tournament, which was organized for the sixth time by Quick Amersfoort. For the first time, six teams participated in the softball-tournament and for the first a baseball-tournament was also included.

As there were now three tournaments organized in one day, the club hosted a record of participating teams with 13. As always, the day ended with a party.

The softball-team of UVV remained unbeaten in the one-day tournament. In Pool A, they played a 4-4 tie against host BioSilk Quick Amersfoort, then won 7-0 against Royal Greys from Belgium to qualify for the final. Quick ended in second place in the Pool by winning 3-1 against the Belgian squad.

In Pool B, last years winner Onze Gezellen won 8-1 against Euro Stars, then beat Caribe 5-3 to become the second finalist. Euro Stars took second place with a 5-0 shutout against Caribe.

In the game for fifth and sixth place, Royal Greys won 5-4 vs. Caribe. Euro Stars finished in third place by winning 3-2 against Quick Amersfoort.

UVV shutout Onze Gezellen 3-0 in the final to become the tournament-winner.

BioSilk Quick Amersfoort was the winner in the men softball-tournament by winning 5-1 against Storks and 2-1 against De Zuidvogels. The latter finished in second place, as it won 2-0 against Storks.

In the baseball-tournament, all four participating teams faced each other and so, they played three games each.

HCAW 3 went on to win the tournament by winning 1-0 vs. Quick Amersfoort 2, playing a 2-2 tie against Vennep Flyers and winning 7-4 against OVVO.
Other scores: OVVO vs. Vennep Flyers 1-1; Quick vs. OVVO 0-1; Quick vs. Vennep Flyers 2-0.
Final standings: 1. HCAW, 2. OVVO, 3. Quick Amersfoort, 4. Vennep Flyers.

The tournament is named after the nickname of the city of Amersfoort, 'Keistad'. That refers to 'De Amersfoortse Kei' (The Amersfoort Rock), which is a big glacial erratic, situated in the city. Legend has it that there has been a mentioning of a huge rock in 1544 on the road from Amersfoort to Utrecht. The story continues that Jonkheer (which can be translated as 'young lord') Everard Meyster (1617-1679) closed a bet with some friends that he could challenge inhabitants of Amersfoort to pull the rock to the city. And so, some 400 inhabitants pulled to rock to the city's center. Initially, they were embarrassed when they realized they did something which was useless and so, they engraved the rock in 1672. The rock was then digged up again in 1903 and is put on display since 1932 at the Arnhemsestraat.

UVV opened the score in the first inning off of starting pitcher Melina Mavroudis, who made a comeback as pitcher. In the past few seasons, she mostly played at first base for Quick, but has been a pitcher before. The combination of her sometimes slow pitches and that the different speed of her reliever Vera de Boer-Esmeijer worked well for Quick, which was able to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 4-4 tie.

In the first inning, Helma Pluim tripled with one out for UVV, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Vogel. Quick answered with two runs off of Melissa Burger in its first at bat. Nurish Fokkens led off with a double and later scored the tying run on an error. Another error gave Quick a 2-1 lead.

UVV then rallied for three runs in the second inning. Ylaine van den Hove led off with a double and Michelle van Waveren walked with one out. They both scored with two outs when Yaelle van Blanken delivered a 2-run-double. She later scored herself on a single by Laura Arp.

In the bottom of the second inning, Quick came alongside. Xaressa van Berkel led off with a triple and scored on a following single by Nurish Fokkens, who returned to Amersfoort on the off-season after having played for Hilversum. Mirjam Boode then reached on an error and a single by Nikki Harte made it a 4-4 score. The bases got loaded when Kayleigh Adelina reached on a bunt, but three runners were then left behind.

Both teams got a runner on third base in the remainder of the game, but didn't add more runs.

UVV vs. Onze Gezellen
In the tournament's final, UVV shutout Onze Gezellen, 3-0. UVV registered only two basehits in this game, which were both hit by Laura Arp.

American lefthander Jessica Vogel dominated and allowed only one batter to reach base in the 4-inning game. That lone batter was Babs de Jonge, who singled with two outs in the first inning. Hereafter, Vogel retired the next ten batters in a row. She struckout eight batters.

For UVV, Laura Arp scored the first run in the first at bat off of Fiona Sewalt. She led off with a walk, moved on a wild pitch and reached third base when a grounder by Helma Pluim ended in an error. Arp then scored in a steal-situatuion, which brought Pluim to second base. After the latter also had stolen third base, Cintia de Groodt walked with one out. The second run was scored moments later on a grounder by Ylaine van den Hove.

In the second inning, UVV made it a 3-0 score. With one out, Yaelle van Blanken reached on an error, then moved on a nice bunt-single by Laura Arp. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Helma Pluim, but that brought Van Blanken to third base and she scored in another steal-situation.

In the fourth inning, UVV got another scoring opportunity. With one out, Nienke Trapman walked, Yaelle van Blanken reached on an error and Laura Arp singled. However, hereafter, a force play at the plate on a grounder by Helma Pluim resulted in the second out. That was followed by a nice play by OG-catcher Patricia Hesterman, who eliminated runner Melissa Burger in a rundown between third base and home plate to end the inning.
