Tex Town Tigers wins twice, scores 20 runs in openers
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - Tex Town Tigers scored twenty runs in its first double-header of the 2020 regular season against Hoofddorp Pioniers on Saturday (April 18). The team won both games, but trailed three times in the first game. Halfway the fifth inning, TTT trailed 6-4, but went on to win 10-6. The second game was won with a 10-3 score and ended in the sixth inning due to the 7-run difference mercy-rule.

Today was Opening Day in the Golden League, later than ever in history. The season initially was scheduled to open on Saturday, April 18. From March 12 on, the entire exhibition season was cancelled due to announced measures against the spread of the coronavirus. From March 23 on, the start of the regular season was postponed frequently.

On June 24, the Dutch Government announced that most measures were eased, effective July 1. The next day, the KNBSB announced that the regular season in both the Golden League and Silver League were to open today, July 18. Also, teams were given a period of two weeks to prepare. Several exhibition games were scheduled and also the Jan de Wit Tournament returned to the program.

This season marks the first time since 2009 that the Netherlands Juniors Team is not participating in the highest league. Since 2010, the team played either as Young Orange or Talent Team Holland. However, last season, after having played twelve games, the team withdraw and all its games were annulled.

(July 18)

Game 1

Hoofddorp Pioniers took an early lead in the top of the first inning off of veteran righthander Lindsey Meadows. She was initially penciled in as the starting designated player with Danielle ten Donkelaar to be the starting pitcher. But when the first inning began, the TTT-coaching announced its change of pitchers. Meadows got two quick outs, but then gave up a single to Shadeney Castillo in her first big league at bat bat since 2011. Back then, she played for both Centrals and the Netherlands Junior Team. Next batter Riangela Flanegin walked and Susannah Groen and Dionne Cooper followed with runscoring singles to put Pioniers ahead, 2-0. Groen and Cooper advanced on a wild pitch, but were then left behind.

Tex Town Tigers Tigers came alongside immediately in its first at bat off of starter Iris Strookman. Speedy lead-off hitter Britt Vonk reached on a bunt-single, which was followed by a throwing error. She advanced on a flyout, then scored on a double by Lindsey Meadows, who went on to score herself on a 2-out single by Merel Oosterveld.

After a scoreless second innng, Pioniers re-took the lead in the third inning. Iris Dweelaard led off with a single and moved on a passed ball., then Riangela Flanegin walked with one out. With two runners on base, Danielle ten Donkelaar took over the TTT-pitching, but she began with a wild pitch, then got the bases loaded when she walked Susannah Groen. A run was then scored on a single by Dionne Cooper. However, with the bases loaded, the inning ended when Franchesca Diaz lined into a double play to short stop Britt Vonk.

Again, TTT reacted immediately, this time scoring twice in its third at bat. And again, veteran players Lindsey Meadows and Merel Oosterveld were involved. Annemiek Jansen led off with a walk and Meadows doubled. With one out, both scored on a single by Oosterveld to put the home-team ahead, 4-3.

Pioniers got another scoring opportunity in the fourth. Rose Mwaro led off with a walk, then reached second base safely on an one-out fielder's choice-grounder by Amy-Lynn Felix. After the two runners had advanced on a wild pitch, Iris Dweelaard flied out to leftfielder Merel Oosterveld. Mwaro was unable to score, but Felix returned too late to second base and was eliminated, which ended the inning.

Pioniers then rallied for three runs with two outs in the fifth. With one out, Riangela Flanegin singled, as did Dionne Cooper (who was 3-for-4) with two outs. Moments later, the tying run was scored on a single by debuting Franchesca Diaz (her first in the Golden League). Rose Mwaro followed with a 2-run single to give Pioniers its third lead, 6-4.

But for the third time, Tex Town Tigers came back and this time scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. When Nadine Marinus, another experienced player in the TTT-team, led off with a walk, a pitching change followed. With a 6-4 lead, Franchesca Diaz took over, but with one out, she gave up a double to pinch-hitter Dinet Oosting, which narrowed the deficit to 6-5. For Oosting, this was her first at bat in a TTT-uniform since September 11, 2010. Back then, she was the short stop of TTT in a game against Centrals with Nadine Marinus, Lindsey Meadows and Merel Oosterveld also being her teammates. Also playing for the team back then was Marije ten Thij, with whom Oosting married some years ago. This season, Ten Thij is not playing, but is the Bench Coach of TTT. In 2011-2019, Dinet Oosting played for Olympia Haarlem. There, Oosting also was a teammate of Oosterveld (2013-2015) and Meadows (2013-2014), who played a few seasons for the Haarlem-based team before returning to TTT.

Oosting moved on a wild pitch, then newomer Tess Remmers (last season Twins Oosterhout) walked and stole second base. Moments later, Oosting scored the tying run on a fielder's choice-grounder by Shaneequa Kock. An error on a grounder by Myrthe Smid and a single by Britt Vonk gave TTT a 8-6 lead.

Pioniers was retired in order in the sixth and seventh inning, but TTT added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on three doubles. Nadine Marinus led off with a double. With one out, Dinet Oosting and Tess Remmers hit back-to-back RBI-doubles to make it a 10-6 score.

Game 2

In the second game, Tex Town Tigers struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the second to take a comfortable lead. In the end, the team reached a 7-run mercy-rule difference to end the game in the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Merel Oosterveld and Annemiek Jansen led off with singles, then the bases got loaded when Britt Vonk walked. Lindsey Meadows then delivered a 2-run single off of debuting starter Qui-lin Coeriel. Dinet Oosting added a runscoring single and with one out, a sacrifice fly by Aafje van Baal lifted the lead to 4-0. Today, Van Baal made her comeback after having being sidelined last season due to an injury.

In the second inning, it were Myrthe Smid and Merel Oosterveld who began with singles. Again, the bases got loaded via a walk, this time for Annemiek Jansen. A pop-fly by next batter Britt Vonk was not caught, but nevertheless ended in an out, as this was an infield-fly. In this situation, all runners can advance on their own risk and so, Smid scored, Oosterveld advanced to third base and Jansen took second base when an error followed. With one out, Oosterveld and Jansen both scored on a double by Lindsey Meadows to make it a 7-0 score.

Pioniers got one run back in the third inning off of starter Shaneequa Kock. With one out and Femke Nuijten (fielder's choice) on first base, Amy-Lynn Felix delivered a runscoring double.

With two outs in the fifth inning, rookie Lisa Brink took over the pitching from Kock. She saw Pioniers scored two more runs in the top of the sixth. Iris Dweelaard led off with a single and Shadeney Castillo followed with a double. Dweelaard was waved home and scored when an error was made. That brought Castillo to third base and she later scored on a sacrifice fly by Riangela Flanegin.

Franchesca Diaz, who took over the pitching for Pioniers after the double by Meadows in the second inning, held TTT scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth. But in the bottom of the sixth, the home-team scored three more runs. Annemiek Jansen and Britt Vonk led off with back-to-back doubles, resulting in the first run. With one out, Pia Siering walked, then Nadine Marinus added a runscoring single. The 7-run mercy-rule difference was then reached moments later on a sacrifice fly by Aafje van Baal that ended the game.

In today's double-header, Lindsey Meadows collected five basehits, including three doubles, scored three runs and batted in five. Merel Oosterveld and Annemiek Jansen both had four hits. Jansen also scored four runs.
