Onze Gezellen wins exhibition double-header vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) -
Onze Gezellen recorded two comfortable victories on Saturday (April 17) in an exhibition double-header against Hoofddorp Pioniers.
Playing at home, Onze Gezellen won 13-4 and 14-4 with both games ending via the mercy-rule.
Last season, Hoofddorp Pioniers remained winless, losing all 23 games it played.
After the 22nd game, the club and the coaching-staff separated.
After the season, several players left the team.
This season, Pioniers will led by the experienced coach Berend Mannessen, who has a long history in coaching.
He also has been a member of the coaching-staff of the Netherlands National Team.
The last few years, he also conduct clinics with former National Team Head Coach Craig Montvidas for the European Softball Coaches Association (ESCA).
Mannessen is good in coaching and teaching young players.
This season at Pioniers, he has a team with young, but talented players, including ten rookies, who will learn a lot from the veteran coach.
Although Pioniers lost both games, there were some positive notes for the young team.
In both games, Pioniers opened the score and led halfway the first inning against the more experienced team of Onze Gezellen, which includes most players who last season played for Terrasvogels with whom the club merged.
In the first game, the Pioniers-defense committed no errors, while the OG-defense made five.
In the second meeting, Pioniers made only two errors.
When trailing in the first inning, Onze Gezellen both times answered with a productive rally to decide the game early.
,,These were our first games, it was the first time that our pitchers faced batters and that our batters faced pitchers.
Today, I told the players to just take their at bat and that was done reasonably well'', reacted Pioniers Head Coach Berend Mannessen.
,,I'm a positive person and I saw good things.
Of course, it was good to take the lead twice.
I tried out some things in the infield.
The outfield did very well.
It will be difficult in the beginning.
We have to work hard, but I think that we are on the right track.
Our players have to gain experience and confidence.
I think that we certainly can give some resistance then.''
Coming Saturday, Hoofddorp Pioniers will play a double-header at home against Sparks Haarlem.
Onze Gezellen then plays a double-header at Tex Town Tigers.
