(Story by Marco Stoovelaar; Photo by Robert Meijboom) European Cup Winners Cup: Olympia Haarlem records shutout-win on Day 2 Nederlands SARONNO / LEGNANO / BOVISIO-MASCIAGO (Italy) - Olympia Haarlem recorded a convincing 8-0 shutout-win in 4½ inning against Crazy Chicklets (Austria) in its first game in the Second Round on Tuesday-evening (August 17) in Saronno, Day 2 of the 29th edition of the European Cup Winners Cup. Olympia scored all runs in the second inning on three homeruns, including a grand slam by Brenda Beers. Olympia Haarlem also won its first two games in the First Round on Monday. The team shutout Zürich Challengers from Switzerland 11-0 in 3½ inning, then outscored Chicaboo's Stabroek from Belgium with an 8-2 score. Today, the First Round ended. The two best teams of the four Groups advanced to the two Groups that will decide the first through eighth place. The first games in these Groups (E and F) were played today. The other teams continue the tournament in the Group for ninth through fourteenth place. The first games in this Group (G) are scheduled for Wednesday. On Wednesday, Olympia Haarlem plays its next game in the Second Round (Group F) against Carrousel (Russia) in Saronno. Later on the day, in Legnano, Olympia Haarlem meets Viladecans (Spain). (© Robert Meijboom) After scoring nine runs in the third inning in the game on Monday against Zürich Challengers, Olympia Haarlem rallied for eight runs in the second inning of today's game. And that was all the team needed to record a convincing victory against Crazy Chicklets. It was also the second one-hitter for the Olympia-pitching. Olympia Haarlem was retired in order in the first inning by starter Paula Leinweber, but then struck with an 8-run rally in the next at bat. In that rally, all runs were scored on homeruns! Lizzie Clarijs led off the second inning with a double, then Mariëlle Vleugels hit the ball over the fence for a 2-run homerun. With one out, Olympia got the bases loaded when Quilen Dirksz singled and both Yindi Beekveldt and Machteld Rector walked. Next batter Brenda Beers then connected well on the fifth delivery she saw from Leinweber and drilled the ball into deep rightfield for a grand slam homerun. That was followed by a pitching change. Emma Hanika took over, but she was greeted with a single by Lindsey Meadows. Hereafter, it was Jessie van Aalst who hit the ball deep into the outfield for a 2-run homerun. And that lifted the lead to 8-0. In her second at bat in the inning, Lizzie Clarijs walked. Hanika struckout the next two batters, but the game was decided. Olympia Haarlem got a baserunner in both the third and fourth inning, but they stranded on respectively first and second base. Lindsey Meadows went the distance for Olympia Haarlem for whom she played in 2013 and 2014. After the 2014 season, the righthander returned to Tex Town Tigers. Meadows retired the side in the first inning, then gave up a lead-off single to Mara Benckendorff in the second inning. An attempt for a sacrifice bunt by Emma Hanika followed. However, the bunted ball didn't drop and became a line drive instead. The ball was caught by 3B Quilen Dirksz, which led to a double play. Benckendorff remained the lone baserunner fot the Austrian team. Meadows closed the second inning with a strikeout, then struckout the side in the third. She struckout eight batters.
