Netherlands Softball Team records two comfortable exhibition wins against France

CASTIONS DELLE MURA (Italy) - The Netherlands Women's Softball Team played an exhibition double-header on Wednesday (June 23) against France to prepare for the European Championship, which opens coming Sunday in Italy. The Orange Team recorded two convincing victories, winning 9-0 and 11-1.

On Tuesday, the Netherlands won 7-3 in its first exhibiton game against Italy. On Friday, the team will play its final exhibition game against the Czech Republic.

Today's games were played in the small village of Castions delle Mura, which is one of the so-called frazioni that form the municipality of Bagnaria Arsa, which is located 50 km northwest of Trieste. The other frazioni are Campolonghetto, Privano and Sevegliano.

Game One
The first game today started around 11 AM and again, the weather conditions were excellent with temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius. There was not much chance to do some hitting, as the French pitching walked eleven batters. With that, only four basehits were recorded, including two doubles by Britt Vonk.

Without hitting a basehit, the first two runs were scored in the first a bat. Britt Vonk and Brenda Beers led off with walks and went on to score on an error and a grounder by Jessie van Aalst.

Three runs were added in the second inning. With two outs and Lizzie Clarijs (fielder's choice) on first base, Suka Van Gurp walked, then Britt Vonk hit an RBI-double. Brenda Beers followed with a 2-run single.

A sacrifice fly by Laura Wissink accounted for the next run in the third inning. Two more runs were added in the fourth. In this at bat, there were eight Orange batters and five of them reached base, all with a walk. Two went on to score.

Ginger de Weert (3 innings) and Lindsey Meadows (two) pitched in this 5-inning game and struckout eight batters. Both gave up only one basehit. France got into scoring position twice. In the first inning, with one out, Pauline Prade reached on an error, stole second base, but then was left behind. And in the fifth inning, Carrie Pitcher led off with a double, but also stranded on second base.

Game Two
In the second game, the Netherlands opened the score with three runs in the first inning. Britt Vonk and Brenda Beers led off with walks, then the bases got loaded with one out when Jessie van Aalst also walked. Hereafter, Mariëlle Vleugels cleared the bases with a 3-run double.

After three scoreless innings, the Orange Team rallied for six runs in the fifth at bat. Britt Vonk led off with a double and with one out, Annemiek Jansen was hit by a pitch. Both scored when Jessie van Aalst followed with a double. Hereafter, Mariëlle Vleugels walked and with two outs, Laura Wissink delivered a runscoring single. The bases then got loaded when Lizzie Clarijs walked and this time, the bases were cleared by Lisa Hop, who connected for a 3-run single.

Two more runs were scored in the sixth inning on singles by Jessie van Aalst and Mariëlle Vleugels.

Kirsten Scheele started for the Netherlands and threw the first two innings.

Marjolein Merkx then pitched the next two and gave up the lone French run, as well as the three basehits the team recorded. In the third inning, she gave up a lead-off single to Emma Patry, who last year was her teammate at Roef! in the Dutch big league. Patry advanced on two grounders, then scored on a single by Kimane Rogron.

Lisa Hop threw the final two innings in today's game and struckout four batters.
