Opener HCAW vs. UVV halted because of light failure
Nederlands
BUSSUM (Neth.) - Fifteen minutes after the opener between Corendon Kinheim and Vaessen Pioniers was postponed due to fog, the opening game between Mr. Cocker HCAW and UVV also ended prematurely. After two complete innings, the game was halted due to problems with two of the lighttowers on the site in Bussum. At that moment, HCAW was leading 1-0. Eventually, the game was stopped definitively and was re-scheduled for Friday-evening at 7:30 PM.

When the game started in Bussum, the lighttowers went on, but it became clear some 30 minutes later that not all lights were functioning in the towers behind the two dug-outs. The lights were tested last Wednesday and a practice session was held in the evening. Earlier today, some lights were replaced. However, they weren't shining when the lights were burning at full force, which of course led to remarks from coaches and players. The only thing to do for the umpire-crew was to halt the game. When it became clear that an electric repairman was not available in a short time, the game was called and postponed to Friday-evening.

It was not yet clear whether the game will be replayed from the beginning or will have an 'adjourned status', meaning the game will be picked up from the third inning when play resumes on Friday.

And so, another 'first basehit of the 2013 season' might be erased from the record books. Initially, Zerzinho Croes led off the game in Haarlem with a double for Pioniers, which at that time was the first basehit of the new season. But shortly thereafter, the game was halted by fog. With that, a 2-out single by Ferd van Stekelenburg in the first inning for UVV in Bussum became the first basehit of 2013. But when the game in Bussum also was halted, it meant that this basehit also 'was never hit', unless the game will resume in the third inning on Friday. If not, the first basehit of the 2013 season will be credited to rookie Gianison Boekhoudt of DOOR Neptunus, who made his big league-debut with triple in his first-ever at bat.

After Van Stekelenburg had singled in the top of the first inning, HCAW opened the score moments later. Jim Froberg led off with a single and moved on grounders by Jasper Keijzer and Jorin van Amstel. Linoy Croes then walked and Froberg scored in a double-steal situation.

UVV was then retired in order in the top of the second inning, while HCAW two more baserunners. Sergino Martis led off with a single and moved on sac-bunt by Arjan Elshof, then Dillon True walked with two outs. A grounder ended the inning and also ended the game, as hereafter, the match-up was interrupted due to the problems with the lights.

Tonight's starting pitchers Jurjen van Zijl (UVV) and Sander Helmendach (HCAW) almost surely will not return to the mound on Friday-evening.
