First day Hudson John Tournament completed
Nederlands
THE HAGUE (Neth.) - The first day of the 15th Hudson John Tournament is in the books. Despite the current cold in the Netherlands, the first three games of the event were played on Saturday, March 30, but were abbreviated to only five innings. The opening game on Friday-evening was postponed due to the cold and will be played either on Sunday or on Monday. It is the first time that the annual event is being hosted by ADO Lakers in The Hague. The previous fourteen editions were organized by Sparta-Feyenoord in Rotterdam, but that club was dissolved in October last year.

On Saturday, Mampaey The Hawks, which will make its debut this season in the Dutch big league, opened the event with a 2-0 shutout-win against UVV. In Game 2, UVV also lost its next game, this time with a 3-1 score to DOOR Neptunus. The first day ended with a 3-1 win by host ADO Lakers against The Hawks. The tournament continues on Sunday-morning at 11 AM.

Game One: UVV vs. Mampaey The Hawks, 0-2
In the first game on Saturday, which was now the opening game of the event after the postponement on Friday, The Hawks won 2-0 vs. UVV.

The Hawks scored both runs in the second inning off of starting pitcher Dennis Burgersdijk. After a runner was left on third base in the first at bat, The Hawks was more successful in the second inning. Gregory Trinidad led off with a walk and advanced to third base when Berend Ruben singled with one out. A double by Coen Merkx then enabled both runners to score and gave the team from Dordrecht a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, The Hawks reached third base again. Urving Kemp led off with a single, then an error followed on a force play-grounder by Bob de Bruin. But then, a double play and flyout followed, leaving Kemp at third base. The UVV-defense turned another double play in the fourth inning.

Three pitchers of The Hawks held UVV to only one basehit. Starter Henk van Heijingen retired the first six batters in a row, then Tim Sloots took over in the third with The Hawks leading 2-0. He gave up a lead-off single to Dennis Ribbens, but he was caught stealing moments later. Next, Joris van Ballegooy was hit by a pitch and an error on a grounder by Andy Raaff led to runners at first and third base. Norbert Jongerius then flied out and Van Ballegooy went on to score, but he was called out, after The Hawks appealed he left third base too early. In the remaining two innings, UVV reached base only one more time, which was when Ribbens walked with two outs in the fifth inning.
