Amsterdam Pirates and UVV split on Opening Saturday
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates and UVV both were victorious on Saturday (April 18), both registering a shutout.

Starting at 12 PM, the teams completed their first game, which was halted last Thursday-evening after five innings due to a light-failure. At the time the game was suspended UVV led 1-0. The team added a run today to win 2-0.

Hereafter, Amsterdam Pirates officially opened its home season. Youthplayer Marvelinio Alberto, who also is the bat-boy of the Amsterdam-squad, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. He did it from the mound and uncorked a perfect strike!

Amsterdam then went on to shutout 5-0 to complete this busy day.

Remainder of first game

On Thursday-evening, Rob Cordemans made his fifth consecutive Opening Day-start for L&D Amsterdam Pirates. UVV-starter Jurjen van Zijl was assigned to his second Opening Day-start in three years. He also started in 2013 for UVV against HCAW.

With one out in the first inning, Joris van Ballegooy became the first player to hit a basehit in the 2015 baseball-season. He advanced on sacrifice bunt by Gilmer Lampe, then reached third base on a wild pitch, but then stranded.

Beginning with the sac-bunt, Cordemans retired eight batters in a row. The veteran righthander then walked lead-off hitter Joris van Ballegooy in the fourth inning. Cordemans followed with a strikeout, then Dennis De Quint also walked. Cordemans again struckout the next batter, but then Jordan Illis reached on an error by short stop Jesse Aussems, which enabled Van Ballegooy to score. Omar Williams followed with a single, but then De Quint was thrown out at the plate by Aussems when he tried to score.

Amsterdam got into scoring position three times in its five at bats. In the first inning, Nick Urbanus walked with two outs and stole second base, but then was left behind.

In the fourth, Kenny Berkenbosch singled with two outs and Bas Nooij was hit by a pitch, but they als stranded.

In the fifth, again with two outs, Linoy Croes walked and stole second base, but stranded.

When the game resumed today, both starting pitchers of course didn't return. Jim Ploeger took the mound for UVV, while Tom de Blok relieved Cordemans.

De Blok retired the side in the sixth, then gave a basehit in the seventh. In the eighth, UVV added its second run off of the righthander. With one out, Joris van Ballegooy singled and stole second base, then scored on a 2-out single by Dennis De Quint.

Amsterdam got two scoring opportunities in its remaining four at bats off of Ploeger. In the seventh, Remco Draijer singled and Rashid Gerard walked, but stranded when Ploeger struckout the next two batters. In the ninth, with two outs, Draijer again singled and Gerard again walked and again were left behind.

Regular scheduled game

In the second game, the score remained scoreless for five innings.

Amsterdam-starter Kevin Heijstek threw seven strong innings, striking out four batters and giving up only four basehits.

Amsterdam was the most productive team in the first five at bats, as it reached base frequently off of starter Kevin Noordzij. The team collected five basehits, but left seven runners behind, including three in scoring position. The home team tried to open the score in the fourth. Remco Draijer then led off with a single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Bas Nooij, then tried to score on a single by Jesse Aussems, but was thrown out at the plate.

Amsterdam then did open the score in the sixth inning off of new pitcher Timo van Ancum. Remco Draijer again led off with a single, then Bas Nooij was hit by a pitch. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Jesse Aussems then led to the first run. Rashid Gerard followed with a runscoring single and a sacrifice fly by Koen Nooij made it 3-0. After Gerard had advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Roelie Henrique, Nick Urbanus singled (he was 3-for-4), but a flyout then ended the inning.

Two runs were added in the seventh. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a single and stole second base. Then the bases got loaded when Draijer walked and Nooij was hit by a pitch again. With one out, Gerard singled to bring in two runs and lift the lead to 5-0.

UVV collected only four hits in the game. Kevin Heijstek retired the first 13 batters in a row, then hit Jordan Illis with a pitch with one out in the fifth inning. He then gave up a single to Omar Williams, but the two runners stranded.

In the sixth, Gilmer Lampe singled with one out for UVV, but didn't get beyond first base. In the seventh, with two outs, Williams and Brennan Nijhof singled off of Heijstek, who then ended the at bat by fielding a comeback-grounder by Sam van Dijck.

Daan Hendrix then pitched the last two innings for Pirates and retired all six batters he faced.
