HCAW closes series vs. Twins Oosterhout with shutout
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW shutout Twins Oosterhout 4-0 in the finale of its 3-game series on Sunday (May 2) to win its second game. On Saturday, HCAW failed to hold onto a 3-0 lead and trailed 4-3 after eight innings, before deciding the game in the top of the ninth, winning 5-4.

The opening game of the series rained out on Thursday-evening in Bussum, but was made up on Friday-evening. Twins Oosterhout then opened the new season with a convincing 8-3 victory in a game that ended after eight innings due to the curfew-rule.

Normally, HCAW always has a ceremonial first pitch before its first home-game in the season that is played in the weekend. There was no first pitch today. Instead, the club had a moment of silence in remembrance of five HCAW-personalities who passed away in the offseason, being Bill Froberg (63, December 19), Ton Schrijvers (82, February 7), Wim Koenders (80, March 6), Bertus Klaver (74, March 15) and Huib Schrijvers (55, March 16).

Bill Froberg was a coach of HCAW in 2003-2005 and 2009-2011 and also was an instructor at the HCAW Baseball Academy. Ton Schrijvers has been a youth-coach. Wim Koenders played in the main-squad in the sixties and was an Assistant Coach in the eighties. Bertus Klaver was also a former youth-coach and has been very active for the club. Huib Schrijvers was the former Chairman of the club in 2014-2019 and the son of Ton Schrijvers. Also honored was big league-umpire Antoine Loock, who passed away on March 22 at age 46.

(May 2)

HCAW got scoring opportunities in the first two innings off of starter Simon Gross, but failed to open the score. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, the German righthander got the bases loaded when he walked Arthur Bonevacia and gave up singles to Rodney Daal and Max Draijer. Julian Goins followed with a line drive, but that was caught by second baseman Tyriq Kemp. Last season, Gross made his debut pitching for Twins in the Bottom-4 Pool. Today, he threw in his first regular season-game.

With one out in the second inning, Berend Ruben walked for HCAW, then Christopher Ge singled. They also were left behind.

After HCAW was retired in order in the third, the team scored its first run in the fourth. Julian Goins led off with a single, then advanced to the next three bases before next batter Bob van der Meer grounded out. With Van der Meer in the batter's box, Goins stole second base. Hereafter, he was awarded third base when a balk was called and he then scored on a wild pitch.

HCAW doubled its lead in the fifth inning by scoring an unearned run. Victor Draijer led off with a single. He then advanced on a passed ball and a wild pitch, before next batter Arthur Bonevacia walked. With runners at the corners, Stefan Iannelli took over the pitching. He began with a strikeout, then got a force play-grounder from Max Draijer, but that also led to a run.

The home-team scored its third run in the third consecutive middle inning. With one out, pinch-hitter Jules Cremer walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a following single by Christopher Ge to make it a 3-0 score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Pastor Enrique Martínez Chavez was the new pitcher for Twins. He walked Arthur Bonevacia with one out, but then was supported with a double play.

HCAW added its fourth run with two outs in the eighth off of Raf Cocu. With two outs, he gave up a single to Bob van der Meer, who then scored on a following double by Jules Cremer.

Twins Oosterhout was held scoreless by two pitchers and left six runners behind in scoring position. The team got close to an opening run in the top of the first inning off of starter Dennis Burgersdijk. He gave up a lead-off double to Rayshelon Carolina, who then stole second base and advanced to third base on a grounder by Tyriq Kemp. Moments later, Carolina was eliminated at the plate on a grounder towards third base by Jason Halman.

In the second inning, Burgersdijk gave up a lead-off single to Ruendrick Piternella, but then retired the next eleven batters in a row. With two outs in the fifth, the righthander got the bases loaded when Tyson Quolas and Jerzy van Gool singled and Rayshelon Carolina walked. A force play ended this at bat.

In the top of the seventh, with HCAW leading 3-0, Nick Keur took over the pitching for HCAW. With one out, the lefthander gave up a single to Diamond Silberie, who then stole second base. Keur then walked Tyson Quolas. The two runners advanced on a grounder by Jerzy van Gool, but were left behind in scoring position.

Twins got its final runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth. Keur walked lead-off hitter Ruendrick Piternella, who was forced out on a grounder by pinch-hitter Luuk Bun. He moved to second base on a 2-out single by Tyson Quolas. The pitcher was 2-for-3 in this game. The inning and the game then ended with a grounder, which sealed the shutout.
